Introduction

Marisa Kirisame stole - or as she likes to say, "borrowed" - another book from Patchouli Knowledge's library, but rather than get confused by intricate phrases, this book seemed rather simple! In fact, there was a map of Gensokyo with some highlighted points, perfect for an ordinary magician to transcribe and understand. Unfortunately, Patchouli and Alice Margatroid came over the following day to demand the book back, telling Marisa to not do anything careless upon seeing what she stole. Following their advice, Marisa began working on her own harmless experiment, recruiting several different groups of Gensokyo residents to take part in a misfortune-exorcising race! All they had to do was reach and destroy labeled wooden dolls that were located on checkpoints that...were suspiciously similiar to the places Marisa had saw on the map. Unfortunately for the racers, we have a classic case of dramatic irony, and Marisa made sure to avoid Patchouli, Alice, or Reimu Hakurei from getting in the way of her plans.

Every event in Touhou LostWord comes with exclusive Music CDs, Story Cards, and other unique event-only items for players to collect. Additionally, every stage plays with the theme of the event and names every opponent in a unique manner for every difficulity! For the sake of preserving these limited-time items and content (which only will reappear in event reruns), this article will mainly cover the names of every foe met while providing extra notes at the end. A small story synopsis will accompany each section to contextualize the reason you fight certain Friends, so expect event story spoilers as you read ahead. It should be expected, given the identity of the final foe is basically spoiled already.

Heats 1-5: Race Begins

Marisa gets the MC (nickname for the self-insert character) to group up plently of people within Gensokyo for a special event! While skeptical of what Marisa is planning, the MC plays along and brings many different groups that have convenient anti-misfortune cheerleader outfits to lead a team. This makes the teambuilding rather simple, with the MC eventually joining with Minamitsu Murasa, Ichirin Kumoi, and Shou Toramaru. While the race seems simple at first, in which participants need to break a wooden doll at every checkpoint, things become slightly wacky fast upon the requirement of the team carrying their leader on their backs, somewhat like a three-legged race. What also doesn't help is the sudden stuck-up nature of some of the racers, especially Tenshi Hinanawi. Some racers even set up traps while racing in an attempt to stop the Myouren gang in their tracks.

Heats 6-10: Picking Up

The racers keep on running into each other, and that just means a lot more chances to fight over who gets to be in the lead. There are some theatrics performed over the waters of Misty Lake, but the endgoal always seems to be to drown opponents in bullets instead of their dust. Team Kogasa especially was a threat, considering Kogasa Tatara's alliance with the instrument tsukumogamis.

Heats 11-15: Fake Revealed

After a run-in with Nitori Kawashiro's definitely-real-Robot-army, the race takes everyone through Hakurei Shrine, where Team Yuuka and Team Kogasa find an unfortunate obstacle in the form of an annoyed Reimu, who takes no time in knocking them out in no time flat. Demanding to know what was going on, Marisa was forced to reveal herself and explain to Reimu, Patchouli, Alice, and the conscious racers, the true intent of the race. Patchouli and Alice explain that the magic circle Marisa was making was not a magic circle at all and rather the instructions for a giant drill that, if completed, would bury Gensokyo right into Old Hell. With vengeful spirits already peeking out and an annoyed Komachi Onozuka (mainly mad due to needing to do work), the race is quickly postponed in favor of stopping the spirits.

Heat 16 to Free Run: Photo Finish

After torturing Marisa a little more while she is already being pursued by more spirits, the issue is eventually resolved. Thanks to the reckless thinking of Team Kokoro, who have somehow finished the checkpoints backwards, the intensity of the drill turned out to be a lot lighter than it was meant to be. With confusion on how to move on, Reimu quickly slaps all of the teams (or at least, those who had unique costumes) to remind them that she has a shrine that needed cleaning. After doing so and with more pestering, Marisa finally decided to continue the race to the end, where more of the same bullet battle fighting occurred. While the ending was a photo finish with multiple ties, the previously-unconscious Team Kogasa missed the last few incidents and turned out to finish the race already, making them the true winners. Marisa scrams before the ending ceremony could even begin.

Extra Laps: Culprit Confrontation

Before the finished teams could chase the runaway Marisa, two other teams (who you and I may have forgotten about) show up to bicker about who the true winner is. After knocking some sense into both of them, they find Marisa at her house. After being yelled at a couple of more times, Marisa finally loses it and tries to fight off the teams before inevitably failing. At a loss, Marisa finally listens and gives the winning team some kind of reward.
