Potions Tier List

Introduction

We all know how important potions are in Wizards Unite; their various effects make fighting the Calamity way easier than it would be otherwise. But some potions aren’t as useful as others either because they’re more situational or they require more work to make than you’ll get out of them. We’ve put together this tier list to help you figure out which potions are going to be the most useful the most often.

Criteria

What makes a high-tier potion high-tier? A good potion will have ingredients that are easy to find, a short brew time, and its effects will match the level of effort it takes to make. This means that if a potion takes eight hours to brew, it won’t go away after one turn or just a few casts.

Now that we’ve established what a high-tier potion looks like, let’s look into what each tier means. In this list we have six tiers: S, A, B, C, D, and F; S is the highest tier and F is the lowest. With all of that in mind, let’s get into the list!

F Tier

F tier means that the potion has no redeeming qualities. Its ingredients are hard to find, its effects aren’t notable, and it takes too long to brew even with master notes. Fortunately none of the potions in Wizards Unite are in F tier so have no fear, every potion has a time and place where its helpful!

D Tier

D tier means that the potion is good, but more situational or is just outclassed by other potions. A potion in D tier isn’t necessarily bad, but it might be best to focus on brewing other potions first.

Invigoration Potion
Invigoration Potion

Invigoration Potion

The Invigoration Potion unlocks at level 8 and gives you 1 Focus when used in combat. While a little extra Focus is never a bad thing, only providing 1 Focus is a little underwhelming at higher levels. As you move further down you Profession’s skill tree, you’ll have enough Focus that taking your turn to recover only one point of it isn’t really the best use of your time. All in all, the Invigoration Potion finds itself in D tier because it doesn’t age well and gets outclassed by other potions fairly quickly.

C Tier

C tier potions are good but not great. If a potion lands in C tier, that means that it doesn’t have any negatives but isn’t as powerful in higher-level encounters. They’re good to have on hand because they’ll never not be useful, even if they get a little outclassed by other brews.

Exstimulo Potion
Exstimulo Potion

Exstimulo Potion

The base Exstimulo Potion lowers the threat level of a Foundable by a little bit for 3 casts. It’s one of the first potions you can brew and does its job reliably since its brew time is the shortest of all the potions and its ingredients are easy to find. It finds itself in C tier mainly because it its outclassed by the higher-level Exstimulo Potions and the minor decrease in threat level isn’t as useful against high-level Foundables.

Dawdle Draught
Dawdle Draught

Dawdle Draught

The Dawdle Draught makes a Confoundable less likely to flee from an encounter after an unsuccessful cast. It’s helpful, especially given some Confoundables’ tendency to run away after just one cast. If you find yourself in an encounter for a Foundable you’ve been searching for for a long time, the Dawdle Draught can be one of the most important tools in your arsenal. Unfortunately that’s really the only time that the Dawdle Draught really shines, so while its ingredients aren’t too rare and the brew time isn’t too long, its situationality keeps it in C tier. It’s effective, just not all the time.

B Tier

B tier means that the potion is really helpful, but one aspect of it isn’t good. Either some of the ingredients are hard to find, the level requirement is really high, or its effects end a little too quickly. B tier potions are great if you have a way to mitigate their one big weakness.

Wit Sharpening Potion
Wit Sharpening Potion

Wit Sharpening Potion

The Wit Sharpening potion is unlocked at level 15 and increases your spells’ power against elite Fortress enemies by 50%. It shines in high-level Fortress combat and can help Professors save their Focus for spells other than the Proficiency Charm, and grant Aurors the power to blast through enemies more easily. While the brew time is short, only four hours without master notes, and the ingredients are easier to find than you’d think, it has the highest level requirement of all, and only affects elite enemies. While the three casts it’s active for is usually enough to end the fight, only activating against elite enemies keeps it from crossing into A tier.

Strong Exstimulo Potion

Strong Exstimulo Potion

The mid-range entry in the series of Exstimulo Potion acts much like the base Exstimulo Potion except it lowers Confoundables’ threat level by a greater amount, and lasts for four casts instead of three. It scales better for higher level encounters than it’s C tier counterpart, but ultimately it’s still outclassed by a higher-level potion we’ll see a little later.

Strong Invigoration Potion

Strong Invigoration Potion

The Strong Invigoration Potion has everything the normal Invigoration Potion does, but cranks it up a couple notches. While it’s brew time is double that of the standard version, the Strong Invigoration Potion grants 3 Focus instead of just one. By tripling the Focus granted, it can be a real lifesaver in all levels of combat as 3 Focus goes a long way even for high-level skills. The biggest thing holding it back from A tier is that its ingredients can err on the rarer side and it doesn’t unlock until you reach level 13 which means you’ll be waiting on it for a while.

A Tier

If a potion is in A tier, that means that it has no downside. Its effects are worth the work it takes to brew, it’s always useful, and its job isn’t done better by another potion.

Potent Exstimulo Potion

Potent Exstimulo Potion

The final entry in the Exstimulo series, the Potent Exstimulo Potion lets you greatly decrease the threat level of a Confoundable for 5 casts. There’s not much else to say about it, it has all the same benefits as the other Exstimulo Potions, just taken to the highest level.

Healing Potion

Healing Potion

The Healing Potion unlocks at level six and restores 35% of your maximum Stamina when in combat against Oddities or Fortress enemies. With common ingredients, a 3 hour brew time without master notes, and a low unlock level, the Healing Potion is absolutely worth investing in. Since it can be used both in Trace Encounters against Oddities, and in Fortress combat, it avoids falling into the same pitfall as the Wit Sharpening Potion. While it really shines in solo Fortress combat by giving the Auror and Professor a little more staying power, it can be used in group combat to help Magizoologists save their Focus for more powerful techniques like the Revival charm. The Healing Potion is an all around solid potion, delivering on its premise in spades.

Tonic For Trace Detection
Tonic For Trace Detection

Tonic For Trace Detection

The Tonic for Trace Detection increases the spawn rate of Foundables around you for 30 minutes. It’s helpful for grinding and pairs well with Landmarks to help you fill out a Registry Family a lot faster than you’d be able to otherwise. It’s also good to use during Brilliant Events as it helps you attract more Brilliant Foundables and finish those steps of the events’ tasks in no time at all! The only real downside of this potion is that some of the ingredients can be harder to find and the brew time is a little long if you don’t use master notes.

S Tier

Finally there’s S tier. An S tier potion has all of the qualities of an A tier potion, but with a little something extra. It might be something like the ingredient requirements are really low, the brew time is exceptionally short, or the effect really helps your progress in the game.

Baruffio's Brain Elixir
Baruffio's Brain Elixir

Baruffio's Brain Elixir

The sole resident of S tier, Baruffio’s Brain Elixir is the best bang for your buck by far. While the 12 hour brew time is the longest, master notes helps bring it down to a more manageable time frame, and its effects and synergy with other items more than makes up for this. The Elixir doubles the XP you earn for 30 minutes. This works perfectly with the Tonic for Trace Detection and if you add a Dark Detector into the mix, then you’ll be able to clear at least one level if not more. And the ingredients are common to boot so you’ll be able to replace the inventory you lost in brewing it within the 30 minutes it’s active, no problem. Baruffio’s Brain Elixir is an excellent potion in its own right, but it’s ability to stack with other items puts it head and shoulders above the rest of the potions.
