I'll Back You Up!

Elson doesn't need many stats to do his job, but he does need stats if he's going to do his job well. Spd is the most important, since he needs to run down his long cooldowns as quickly as possible. From there, boost his survivability with HP% and Def%, since he needs to survive long enough to reapply his buffs later in the battle.

It's probably best to go for Effectiveness as his last substat, since it will help him land the Attack Break from his S1 more effectively. However, you could also go with Effect Resistance if you don't have a good cleanser and you're worried about him getting disabled by enemy debuffs.

Because Elson is mostly good for the utility of his S3, he has room to benefit from many of Epic Seven's Soul Weaver-specific Artifacts:

  • Celestine and Wondrous Potion Vial give Elson some extra team utility for when he's not buffing. Celestine heals an ally whenever Elson uses his S1, and Wondrous Potion Vial gives him some cleansing potential.
  • Idol's Cheer and Water's Origin only work if you've built Elson tanky enough to absorb a few hits, but they help your team take more turns overall, which is great.

In case you haven't pulled any of the above Artifacts yet, good budget options are Prophetic Candlestick to reduce his cooldowns or Labyrinth Cube to increase his turn speed.

If you have the Rod of Amaryllis, Shimadra's Staff, or Magaraha's Tome, don't give these to Elson. He does benefit from them, but not as much as pretty much any other Soul Weaver, since the cooldowns on his healing and support moves are so long.

Team

Core

All of the units in this team are free heroes who can be obtained very early in the game, making this an easy team to put together to clear early-game content. Ras tanks on the frontline while Elson buffs and Aither heals. Mercedes, with her spammable AOE attacks and high base Atk stat, benefits a lot from Elson's Atk buff, which should help her cleave through most mobs single-handedly.

Secondary

After you've been playing for a while, you might upgrade to a team that looks more like this. Between Falconer Kluri's Defense Break and Elson's Attack buff, this team enables Lena to do a lot of damage, helping her to nail the cooldown reset of her S3. Angelic Montmorancy is an excellent cleanser, but her healing can lag behind (since her S2's healing is conditional,) so she appreciates Elson's help with keeping the party healthy.

Analysis

Overview

Elson has been buffed and nerfed many times from patch to patch, going from one of the best 3★ Soul Weavers in Epic Seven to one of the worst and back again. As of December 2019, he's back in a pretty good spot, able to buff Attack and Defense in one move while also serving as a passable off-healer. Furthermore, since he's the only Light-element Connection hero, Elson may be the player's only Light-element unit for quite some time, proving useful as a neutral unit against Fire, Water, and Earth.

Strengths

Only Light-Element Connection Hero

As a Connection hero, Elson can be obtained for free and at a guaranteed rate by completing his Connection Quest. Because his Connection Quest is so easy to complete, Elson can be recruited by most players very early in the game, giving them access to a Light-element unit long before they can access the Moonlight Summon.

AOE Attack and Defense Buffs

Elson's primary function is buffing the party with his S3, which increases Atk and Def for the entire team. Having an Atk buff really helps players to punch above their weight, even with new or poorly-geared units, and he can even Soulburn to increase the duration of his buffs by 1 turn. Since Elson is so easy to recruit, he can be a valuable investment early-game for players who haven't pulled stronger buff units like Diene or Vivian.

Helpful Off-Healer

Elson's healing isn't enough to sustain a party on his own, but his contributions relieve a lot of stress on your main healer. In addition, his Def buff helps reduce the amount of damage your party takes, which helps even his minor healing go a lot further.

3★ Unit

As a 3★ unit, Elson uses Stigma instead of Molagora for Skill Enhancement. Since Elson desperately needs to enhance his skills (at the very least his S3, in order to reduce its cooldown by 1 turn), this is very important. Stigma is a very common resource, while Molagora are very rare and should be saved for your very best units. Using some Stigma on Elson is a worthy investment even if you don't plan to use him long-term, which in turn prolongs his usefulness in your party.

Weaknesses

Terrible Stats

Elson's HP is mediocre at best, his Spd is terrible, and he has some of the lowest Atk in Epic Seven. (At least he has great Def.) His damage is bad, he is slow to take turns, and he is very vulnerable to enemies that penetrate Def (like Watcher Schuri) due to his low HP.

Long Cooldowns

In addition to low Spd, Elson suffers from long cooldowns on his S2 and S3. Even after Skill Enhancement, both skills have a 4-turn cooldown, which is a long time to wait. Since Elson's value comes mostly from his buffs, having to wait so long to put them up again can be a real problem.

Low Healing

Elson's healing is based off the maximum HP of the characters he is healing. This can be good for beefy allies who naturally have a lot of HP. However, the percentage he heals is quite low (15% for the S2 and 10% for the S3). Combined with his sluggish turn speed and his long cooldowns, Elson's healing can't be counted on as anything more than a nice bonus.
