JWA Opinion: Don’t compare 1.14 to 2.0 Creatures

Introduction

Okay so we have all now had some time to digest the absolute monster of notes released for Patch 2.0. Is your head still spinning like mine is? Good, I’m not the only one. If you haven’t checked out our coverage on it make sure to do so below.

We knew Patch 2.0 was going to be big, but I don’t think anyone anticipated how BIG it was really going to be. The creature updates alone warranted their own forum post and there were only 4 creatures that didn’t get some sort of stat or move change. On top of that, they implemented basic moves with more abilities that are essentially going to change how we battle in the arena. And that’s not even including the Raids we will be able to participate in. That means this game will be fundamentally different and we need to remember that.

Dissecting my Team in 2.0

After reading through all the notes, I was admittedly overwhelmed. This is going to be a whole new game with new mechanics, new creatures, and new abilities that will take a little time to understand. I was already trying to digest what exactly all the creature changes meant. As with everyone else, I immediately looked at my team.

  • Mammolania -  what?! They took away Definite Rampage? No! they can’t do that. It’s useless to me now.
  • Monostegotops – A health nerf, a crit nerf, and its counters got immunity to stun?! (insert cry emoji here).
  • Ardentismaxima and Geminitan – Immunity to DOT is gone. I go up against one bleeder and I’m toast.
  • Tryos lost its ferocious strike and what the heck is Refresh?!

I saw similar sentiments on our discord. Thoughts that the creatures so many people worked for have been “nerfed to oblivion”. How their team is ruined and they won’t be able to compete anymore.

1.14 Creature are not the same in 2.0

Here’s the thing though. This update is so very different than the other in that these stats changes are just “nerfs” and “buffs”. Just because something lost 200 HP or gained 300 attack doesn’t mean that’s a nerf and a buff. We have to look at the overall picture. We simply cannot directly compare our 1.14 creatures to their direct 2.0 counter. Lania is not the same creature. It’s meant to play a different role in 2.0 and that’s okay.

Mammolania lost its Definite Rampage but it gained 50% armor. Ardentismaxima and Geminititan can now receive DOT damage, but gain more speed control options and look like fantastic options as Raid creatures. Monostegotops lost HP and crit percent, but….well I’ve got nothing here. I don’t know why they did my girl dirty but I will probably need to find a replacement for her on the team (insert cry emoji again). But I am hoping she is able to live again through something like Monolorhino.

My point is we don’t know what is actually going to happen with the meta. Creatures that were collecting dust on the bench may now be viable again. We are all going to have to learn the new mechanics and move orders together. We will all probably be changing our team in some way. And with the change to exclusive creatures and possible migration something that wasn’t accessible to you in 1.14 might be much easier to get in 2.0.

More creatures got more counters and this is a good thing. There won’t be those top 3-4 that just dominate the game. In fact, I am hoping we don’t have to have a High Tyrant tier at all. Almost every creature is going to have a place somewhere in the scheme of things and your team will be fine. Take a minute to say goodbye to your 1.14 because when we get back from maintenance for 2.0 they won’t be the same creature (nor are they meant to be).

Parting Words

After reading through everything, I really believe this is what the game needed. This is the balance everyone has been looking for. Yes, there are big changes, but I truly believe it will be better for the overall health of the arena. I am hoping to see more variety and different creatures being used. I am hoping that battles make me think again like they used to. I know it’s a lot to take in. There are a lot of changes and it’s going to take some time to adjust. So be patient, and give update 2.0 a little time before determining how good/bad it is.
