Niantic Announces Pokemon Go and Pokemon Trading Card Game Crossover

In a rather unexpected yet also fairly natural move, Niantic has officially announced that Pokemon Go and the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) are teaming up. While this doesn't seem that it will have any real effect on those of us who play Pokemon Go currently, the TCG can expect to see Pokemon Go related cards in the coming days. To start with, this summer will feature a card showcasing our very own Professor Willow.

We don't yet know what this card will entail for the TCG, but we do know that Niantic intends to unveil the card art this May, and will tell players how to obtain this card for themselves.

While this is an interesting turn of events in-and-of itself, it opens the doors for even more crossover in the future. Likely candidates for other cards would be the Team Go Rocket leaders, Cliff, Arlo, and Sierra. Items that are unique to Pokemon Go could also be featured, such as Lures or Rocket Radars. Going beyond this, perhaps we'll see Pokemon Go partner with other aspects of the Pokemon brand as a whole in the future? Pokemon Go was a definite turning point for the Pokemon Compant, so perhaps the NPCs and unique effects created for this game have the potential to cement themselves into the Pokemon franchise as a whole? Time will tell, but it would definitely be nice to see Professor Willow and the rest appear in the anime or other crossover games such as Pokemon Masters at some point in the future.

So what's your take on this? What do you hope to see from the TCG crossover, and what other crossovers do you want to see happen in the future? Let us know in the comments!

Trainers,

A collaboration has been finalized between Pokémon GO and the Pokémon Trading Card Game!

2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. And, just like the video games, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. To celebrate, we are doing a collaboration between Pokémon GO and the Pokémon Trading Card Game!

In part 1 of the collaboration, Professor Willow will appear as a Pokémon TCG card in summer 2021, which marks the five-year anniversary of the release of Pokémon GO! We plan for this card to be obtainable in regions around the world where the Pokémon TCG is sold.

Starting in late May 2021, we plan to announce the art and content of the Professor Willow card and details on how to get the card in each area. We will make announcements as further collaborations are determined, so we hope you will look forward to those!

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is a two-player, head-to-head trading card game based on the Pokémon video game series. You can experience the fun of collecting Pokémon TCG cards, building your own deck, and using it in Pokémon battles.
