Yet another Pokemon Day is upon us, and with it comes an event in Pokemon Go!

This event, which celebrates the release of Pokemon Red and Green on February 27, 1996, has been a standing celebration for the Pokemon Franchise, and Pokemon Go is definitely no exception to this rule. This year we have party hats, clone Pokemon, a special raid day, and the return of Armored Mewtwo!

The Event

Two Special Trades per Day

For the duration of this event, players will be allowed to make two special trades per day. This is a potentially important bonus as we go into the Master League with Go Battle League, as it's a tier infested with legendary Pokemon. We recommend that you get together with your friends and begin planning out your trades!

Party Hat Pokemon

As has become something of a tradition in Pokemon Go, this event brings a new set of party hat Pokemon.

Availabe in the Wild

Available from 7k Eggs and Tier 1 Raids

Available from Special Raid Day

It has been confirmed that any not-fully-evolved party hat Pokemon will not be able to evolve. Shame.

As stated, Gengar and Nidorino will see a co-raid-day on March 1st, with both featuring party hats!

  • As is customary, 5 free passes will be available from spinning gyms.
  • Raids for one of these two Pokemon will be on every gym that didn't already have a raid or egg active
  • Gengar will know its exclusive moveset: Lick and Psychic
  • Gengar will be Tier 4, while Nidorino will be Tier 2

It has also been confirmed that any Haunter evolved during this period will know Lick and Psychic, but will not gain a party hat.

Expect a Nidorino raid guide to be made, and our Gengar raid guide to be updated soon!

Clone Starters

Featured in Mewtwo Strikes Back and its remake that's due out on February 27th, these Pokemon are clones created by Mewtwo to demonstrate the superiority of genetically modified Pokemon. Sadly, they have identical stats, typing, and movesets to their vanilla contemporaries and currently have no hope of learning the exclusive Community Day starter moves, meaning they're actually less impressive than their basic formes. Still, they do look very nice!

Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise are available in Tier 4 raids (expect our raid guides to be updated soon!), while Pikachu is available via photobomb and cannot evolve into Raichu.

You can see the cloned formes on the infographic below.

Armored Mewtwo Returns

The ever-popular defensive variant of Mewtwo is making its return in honor of its upcoming movie remake, and this time it will know its signature move, Psystrike!

While this move isn't going to be enough to make Armored Mewtwo viable in raids generally speaking, it is a very powerful move that will help the Genetic Pokemon gain more potential utility in Ultra and Master League PvP formats. It's definitely best to not miss this one!

Infographic

Our friends over at Pokeminers have been hard at work as usual, and have compiled a fantastic infographic displaying all of the new formes released in this event.

This is a fairly interesting event. While it focuses heavily on Pokemon aesthetics and should make forme collectors very happy, it also has a few bits that will help those looking to maximize their effectiveness reach their goals. Regardless, it's time to get out there and start making the most of what's available before it's gone!

So what are your thoughts on this event? What part of it do you intend to focus on? I for one am going to try to score a good Psystrike Armored Mewtwo, but we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
