So who's ready to go back to Kanto? And even more than that, who's ready to go back to 1996? Niantic is giving us a new event that will take us back to Generation 1, and will put a heavy emphasis on the series famed tag line: Gotta catch 'em all!

Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto.

February 20, 2021
Start Time End Time
9:00 a.m. local time 9:00 p.m. local time

This is largely a paid event! In order to take full advantage of the event, you'll need to purchase one of two tickets. More on that a bit later.

Non-Paid And Paid Event Bonuses

  • Pokemon originating from Kanto will appear more frequently in the wild
  • A special timed research event will be available
  • Trade range will be increased to 40km
  • The full roster of Kanto Legendary Pokemon will be available, all with their elite moves present

Special Move: Hurricane

Special Move: Thunder Shock

Special Move: Sky Attack

Special Move: Psystrike

Paid Event Exclusive Bonuses

The ticket for the full features of this event will sell for USD $11.99 plus tax where applicable. Players will have a choice between two different tickets based on the versions of the original Pokemon games: a Red Ticket and a Green Ticket (in its original Japanese release, the original versions were Red and Green, later released as Red and Blue globally).

The tickets are nearly identical, but they do have the key difference of allowing Pokemon to spawn that were exclusive to the version that reflects your ticket color.

Paid Ticket Universal Bonuses

  • All 150 of the originally available Pokemon from Kanto will be available during this event via various sources, with version-exclusive restrictions that are outlined below.
  • Players will have until February 27, 2021 to catch/evolve/trade for all 150 original Pokemon from Kanto in order to obtain special rewards
  • Your Kanto Pokemon collection for the event will be recorded in the Today View
  • All 150 original Pokemon from Kanto will be available as shinies, with a special selection of boosted shinies based on the ticket purchased. This is outlined below.
  • Players will be given an exclusive medal that corresponds to the version chosen
  • Players will be able to obtain more candy for catching Pokemon that originated in Kanto during the event. No word currently in regards to boosts to XL candy
  • Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto Special Research will be available and enable an encounter with "a special Pokemon".
  • If this research line is completed on the day of the event, a second research line will be granted to the player. This research line will be able to be completed at will, and will reward the player with an encounter with Shiny Mew!

Exclusive Attacks

Along-side the raid bosses for this event sporting their elite moves, all evolved forms of the Kanto starters will be able to learn their exclusive moves if evolved/caught during this event.

Special Move: Frenzy Plant

Special Move: Blast Burn

Early Purchase Bonus

In conjunction with the bonuses listed above, purchasing a ticket for this event before specific dates will also grant players access to the tickets for community day events for January and February for free. Simply purchase the ticket before the dates outlined below to gain access to their special research stories (a $1 value per day)

Community Day Date
January 13, 2021
February 7, 2021

Overall, this is not a huge value, especially since we don't know what Pokemon will be featured on these days yet. However, if you plan on purchasing the ticket regardless, then why not do so early to get a bit more value?

  • Community Day Paid Research lines tend to give a bit of extra XP and stardust and are easily completed just by catching the featured Pokemon of the day
  • Community Day Paid Research gives the player a chance to catch several individual Pokemon featured on their community day with a 10/10/10 IV floor, raising the odds of catching at least one individual with high IVs substantially

As should be obvious from the title, Niantic is very likely planning on turning this into an event series. We already have Shiny Celebi coming via an event later this month, so this is a very interesting prospect.

In the future, this could be used to deliver Pokemon such as Shiny Jirachi, Shiny Victini, and all of the other mythical "Mew clones" that were so prevalent from Generation 1 to Generation 5. We could also see other Pokemon released events like this one. Perhaps the long-awaited Kecleon? And moving even farther, we could see it as the way that Niantic will give us Arceus when Sinnoh's turn comes along. Time will tell!
