Overview

Among tier 3 raid bosses, Alakazam is unique in that it is not only bulky but also an offensive threat to even well-prepared teams. Battles against Alakazam are a struggle for survival and a fight against the clock, especially against Confusion variants. If you are searching for your first Alakazam solo, try to find one with Psycho Cut. Unfortunately, this is difficult without the aid of something like a raid tracker.

Mainstays in this matchup are Gengar - particularly ones with legacy Shadow Claw - and Tyranitar. Both are critical for success despite weaknesses to particular flavors of Alakazam. Dodging is essential for many of Alakazam’s counters; expect them to drop like flies otherwise.

Approach

Team composition

  • Independent of moveset, a Gengar and Tyranitar combo usually works
  • Front load with high-DPS glass cannons such as Gengar and Banette
  • Use Dark-types to help survival, except vs. Psycho Cut + Focus Blast
  • If using Pinsir or Scizor, consider them in the last slot for smoother DPS
  • Using any Pokemon not one of the counters listed below is ill-advised

Dodging strategy

  • Gengar and Banette should aim to use 3-4 Shadow Ball before fainting
  • Dark-types can tank Future Sight or Shadow Ball for faster energy gain
  • Dodge Focus Blast regardless of weakness or resistance to the attack
  • If energy bar is full, don’t wait for Alakazam to use a charge move first

Vs. Confusion

  • Lead with a Dark-type to absorb the two initial Confusion attacks
  • Gengar and Banette should aim to use 2-3 Shadow Ball before fainting
  • Load up on Dark-types for survival; Focus Blast is a very difficult battle

Counters

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.
