Great/Excellent throws

I've been trying to practice my great and excellent throws the last couple days in preparation for the event. My current throwing technique is:
1. Spin the ball at the bottom center of the screen
2. Wait for the circle to get smaller/attacks and dodges to finish.
3. Flick my finger/thumb up and to the right to the mon.

I can get great throws around half the time. I rarely even try for excellent because I can't hardly do it, other than by accident. My suspicion is that the way to improve is through muscle memory and practice, but I'm open to ideas. Any thoughts?

Practice makes perfect.

Agreed!
Here are some practice tips:
The first thing to do is to turn off AR.
Having the mon always be in the same starting place make a very big difference.
Timing the circle is important, but hitting the center on every throw is what you need to achieve in order to get "excellent", once you can repeat center hits then start to precisely time the circle to get more excellent hits.

Just throw any curveball as long as it hits, especially at birds and rats. I learned curveball when I got fed up with small fry breaking out. It was better to miss and waste a ball than to wait through the animation and lose the ball anyway. Now I'm curving at Zubats like no big deal, just throwing the ball as far at the top left corner as possible with my right index finger. The only thing getting in my way is dirty screen or sweaty finger. Another trick is keeping my throwing finger's nail relatively long and put it on the screen so that it's half nail and half skin, the nail makes the finger slide smoother even on a dirty screen.

Use any berry, including Nanab, and watch its movement. If you throw a counter-clockwise spinning curve ball along the same path the berry took, the ball will hit the center of the circle.

Still easier said than done, but at least it is an additional guide to help practice.

I find that closer pokemon are a lot harder to hit in the circle with a curveball. I usually overthrow with even the softest throw and just bonk them on the side, which is still usually good enough against a yellow-orangish circle.

Interesting thought about the berries. You may have finally found a use for those nanab berries lol.

And I pretty much never hit the circle on Pidgey, Weedle, and Caterpie.

Its easy to hit excellent on pidgey with a standard throw. Imagine sliding your finger just 2 or 3 pixels. There you go.

I'm pretty good at throwing straight balls and hitting the middle of the circle and have been practicing curveballs like crazy, getting better at it, but still missing sometimes. A least it's not as much as I used to.

Sometimes I get impatient (or frustrated) and don't even have a circle yet, or the game takes a GPS reading which seems to cause problems. But as with everything, it just takes much more practice!

Happy hunting to all!

Another question is, whether you will want to try for Great or Curved (assuming you are not proficient doing both at the same time.)
My gut says to go for Curved if
- the circle is not green
- this is your first try
- capture is more important than xp (e.g. rare mon)
And go for Great, or even Excellent if
- the circle is green (or maybe yellow)
- you already missed the 1st catch bonus anyway, and want another throw bonus instead
- not fatal if the mon will escape and run

Any thoughts?
