Prepare for Your Day Accordingly

This guide will cover all of the in-game knowledge you’ll need to make the most out of Cyndaquil Community Day. Don’t forget to also prepare for the real weather and everything that comes along with that. Keep your real bag fully upgraded and, depending on the weather, make sure to bring along a jacket, rain poncho, water, sunscreen, as well as lunch, snacks, water, medical necessities, battery packs, fully charged devices, other protective gear, and water again, for good measure. Pace yourself and take breaks if needed to not get burnt out. Most importantly, keep it fun!

Where to Play

Cyndaquil spawns will be dramatically increased everywhere during the duration of this event. You aren’t required to play anywhere specifically, but here are some tips for getting the most out of the location you choose.

  • Exploring the Community - Use Community Day, and Pokemon Go in general, as an excuse to explore local areas. If you’re blessed with multiple, good locations, make use of them throughout various Community Days.

  • Playing with Friends - Community Day should be about the community, both the area and your local PoGo Players. Get together with friends, find your local group using PokeNav, or be the first in your area to create a group. If you see other trainers in your gyms, that means there’s others out there playing! More trainers means more fun, and Lure Modules appear for all players, so you can all share the increased spawns. Returning and new players- ask around and figure out where established players are planning to play!

  • Gyms for Raids - While players may be focused on catching during CD, this CD Pokemon is less meta-relevant than usual, meaning many players will be willing to raid during CD.

  • Clusters and Lures - If you want to catch the most Cyndaquil, focus on cluster spawns in areas with lots of network traffic such as parking lots and apartment complexes and high stop density areas that can be easily Lured up.

  • Nests - Cyndaquil is a nesting Pokemon so visiting an Cyndaquil nest during CD can significantly increase your Cyndaquil spawns. Trainers without a local Cyndaquil nest shouldn’t stress as the whole world is basically an Cyndaquil nest during CD. Additionally, consider local nests with other meta-relevant and shiny possible Pokemon. Nests won’t rotate again before Community Day so any Cyndaquil nests should hold. Check the Silph Road’s Nest Atlas for information on your local nests, and help report and missing holes you see.

  • Weather - Pursuing weather-boosted Cyndaquil will grant you higher CP and IV Cyndaquil so it’s advised to hunt in forcasted Clear areas. This comes with it decreased catch rates and higher aggressive levels of Pokemon but is offset in Stardust gained and saved from catching weather boosted Pokemon. Pay attention to official weather reports as well as other trainers playing in different level 11 S2 cells (in-game weather boundaries).

  • Nests that Correspond to the Weather - There’s only so much you can do about your in-game weather. That said, if you know it’s going to be Rainy, picking a nest containing Slowpoke, for example, can still help you make the most out of Community Day by giving you more weather boosted Pokemon to catch.

Getting Prepared: Items to Bring

6 Star Piece

4x Stardust on catches is the best we've ever seen! Make use of it. We have 2x Stardust from the Stardust Blast event and 2x Stardust from Community Day. Even if you only catch for 1/4 of the Star Piece (7 minutes) this is super worthwhile. You can read our analysis on the current Ultra box here. A Star Piece (or 6) makes this a 6x dust event, absolutely unheard of. The Ultra box becomes a much better deal considering.

While this CD doesn't provide benefits for Incubating itself, you'll likely be incubating. Eggs are worth double the dust from Stardust Blast and a Star Piece makes that triple definitely do a batch hatch and spend some incubators this CD.

0-6 Incense and Lures

Having 6 Incense will let you crack open one every 30 minutes and make it last the entirety of the event. Keep walking! Incense spawns more Pokémon while you’re moving! Even if you’re stuck at work where nothing spawns during the event window, popping some Incense could help you nab a shiny or two. 25 Incense can be purchased in bulk for 1250 in the Shop (50 each) at any time for those looking at an alternative to various Legacy Special Boxes. 25 Incense is enough for 4 Community Days and an extra to spare. Players able to play in a decent area for the duration of the event may decide to save Incense for future Community Days where a more meta-relevant Pokemon is featured.

0-6 Lucky Egg

Double the catches on XP adds up a lot and can make catching a lot more fun. The Bonuses for first, curved, Nice, Great, and Excellent throws are also doubled (or quadrupled on an Egg) so aim for consistent Great throws as those bonuses really add up.

Still, these XP gains pale in comparison to leveling up friendship. Those low on Lucky Eggs should definitely put eggs towards Friendship or schedule your friendship level ups to increase during Community Day. Remember too that Community Day is a great time to start making new friendships!

Berries and Balls

It’s always a good idea to stock up before CD. The themed research “Catch 3 Cyndaquil” can also help you keep a full item bag. Razz berries are great to secure catches on evolved Pokemon. Pinap berries can be mostly avoided/saved for future use.

Before Community Day Starts

There are few things to keep in mind right before Community Day starts for making the most of the granted bonuses.

  • 3-hour Lures only work if started after the start of Community Day. Even more, Lures started before Community Day won’t spawn the featured Pokemon. Wait till the event starts before starting any Lures or Incense.

  • You can only complete research from each stop once daily.  If you complete a task at a given stop, you cannot receive the “Catch 3” task from that stop during Community Day. Occasionally, receiving the task from a stop will lock it into its non-CD task.

  • Leave spawns till Community Day starts. Catching during double XP and QUADRUPLE Stardust is a much better use of resources, even if that means just looking at spawns for 10 or 15 minutes before the start of the event.

  • Existing spawns can change to Cyndaquil. If you want to catch the most Cyndaquil, avoid clicking on spawns as Community Day is about to begin. Doing so can cause the spawn to not change, even if you only Shiny check it.

Now, with those in mind, there is still room for choice. If you’ll be playing all Community Day then you might not care about one spawn point here and there, and catching a weather boosted Machop or shiny checking a Wailmer may be worth it to you.

During Community Day, Research Tasks are changed to “Catch 3 Cyndaquil” with the following rewards;

  • 500 stardust.

  • 2 Ultra balls.

  • 5 Great balls.

  • 2 Pinap berries.

This allows you to not stress about Research during the event and concentrate on catching. It also means that Trainers can rest easy knowing that Community Day itself will help provide them with additional Pinaps, Ultra Balls, and Great Balls! There are a few additional things to keep in mind as far as how this functioned last Community Day;

  • Research from each stop can only be completed once each day. If you complete a task at a given stop, you cannot receive the “Catch 3 Cyndaquil” task from that stop.

  • Tasks revert to their pre-CD tasks when CD is over but you cannot receive research from Stops where you completed “Catch 3 Cyndaquil” or the original research.

  • Because of this, you may decide to skip over stops during CD that you know give desirable research (from Discord, Facebook, etc.) or complete them before CD starts.

  • Many players may do the opposite, choosing not to complete Research in areas they know they will be during CD for easy rewards.

  • Check to see if you have completed the Research Task of a given Pokestop by the indicator in the top right corner of a Pokestop

What's in the Box?

Legacy Community Day Special Boxes have held a variety of supplies and are available shortly before the start of Community Day. A list of previous and current contents can be found on our Legacy Special Box list (as well as cost analysis breakdowns). June Community Day introduced Great and Ultra Boxes, amazing deals for an extremely limited time, disappearing at the end of CD in America. This section will include a more thorough breakdown upon release of the Special Boxes in the Shop.

If there are no pre-existing boxes in the shop, expect 1-3 CD boxes. If there’s already a set of boxes in the shop, expect 0-1 new CD boxes.

The current Ultra box was already a pretty good deal. With 4x Stardust, having 6 Star Piece becomes even more important and the box's value even better. Definitely consider picking one up if you're low on Star Pieces.

The November CD Box is a repeat of last month's and likely just as bad as it was back then. It essentially provides 3 Lucky Eggs, 1 Lure Module, and 30 Ultra Balls for 30 coins. This 4% discount is barely a sale, ranking it the 2nd worst box of the year. Skip.

Stardust Stats and Strats

With 4x Stardust (6x on a Star Piece), it becomes even more important to prioritize catching evolved and weather boosted Pokemon. Consider catching weather boosted Pokemon before even shiny checking. Never just shiny check. Quick catch everything!

The following table breaks down the dust for catching evolved and weather boosted Pokemon this CD

Type of Pokemon Normal Dust with Star Piece Event Stardust with Star Piece
Basic 100 150 400 600
+ Weather Boost 125 187 500 750
Stage 1 300 450 1200 1800
+ Weather Boost 375 562 1500 2250
Stage 2 500 750 2000 3000
+ Weather Boost 625 937 2500 3750

Now is also the best time to clear out your stacked Research reward encounters. You can also better prepare for Community Day by beginning to stack up encounters for this Saturday. Pay special mind to tasks that provide Stage 1 Pokemon;

  • Earn a Candy walking with your Buddy = Clefable
  • Send 5 Gifts to Friends = Golbat
  • Make 5 Great Throws in a row = Wigglytuff

Each of these tasks basically reward 1800 Stardust during Community Day!

Additionally, if you're already Star Piecing, you might as well hatch some eggs. Here's a breakdown of how much dust you can expect per egg. Note that these values are for the entirety of the Stardust Blast event, not just Community Day.

Egg Distance Normal Stardust with Star Piece Event Stardust with Star Piece
2km 400-800 600-1200 800-1600 1200-2400
5km and 7km 800-1600 1200-2400 1600-3200 2400-4800
10km 1600-3200 2400-4800 3200-6400 4800-9600

The Burning Question

Just how good will Blast Burn Typhlosion be?

Well, things don’t look too hot for our badger buddy. Typhlosion has the exact same stats as Charizard, which sounds like a promising start. The issue comes with Typhlosion’s available moves. Charizard has access to the powerful Fire Spin while Typhlosion was left with Shadow Claw. Both also have Ember, a weaker fire fast move. Here’s a look at where our top Fire-types will stack up after this Community Day.

Data via GP’s Comprehensive DPS/TDO Sheet against Registeel in Clear weather.

Typhlosion typically falls behind Infernape and Arcanine (not pictured) as the 8th best Fire attacker but appears here in the 6th position. For players interesting in using unique Pokemon teams, Typhlosion will make your battle party.

While not anything too impressive for the more casual players or hardcore short-manners, Typhlosion will be a respectable Fire Pokemon. That you can get a bunch of Community Day candy for it means its a relatively free investment, especially if you can trade for a Lucky. Players interested in PokeDraft should definitely get at least one good version of this exclusive legacy Pokemon.

As far as the stat rework, Typhlosion receives -3 DEF (average -9.85) and +23 [email protected] (average +26.31). Basically no defensive nerf is pretty good as Typhlosion will see a nice flat TDO/survivability boost.

You can read more about Starter Pokemon and the impact of their known exclusive moves in this article.

Setting Goals and Making Trades

Though many players can suffice with 1 Typhlosion, set your goal based off previous Community Days as a benchmark. You can also use the day as a means to explore different routes and paths to see where you’ll want to hunt when the featured Pokemon is even better or rarer.

Each Typhlosion costs 123 Cyndaquil candy which is 31 catches + transfers or 18 catches w/ Pinaps + transfers. With Cyndaquil everywhere, this is super easy for any players needing to fill holes in their Pokedex.

Some players may be filling their Typhlosion dex entry, some completing the gender dex (starters are ⅛ female so look carefully before deleting all), and others will be competing to get the most or best shinies. You have until 1 hour after the event ends to IV check, trade, and evolve for the exclusive moveset, and some may find that they’d like to begin trading before the start of the event even. When picking a trading partner, there’s two different options to consider each with their own benefits.

  • Play with your partner.

    • Carpool

    • Catch the same spawns (for even trades) and split the role of IV checking

    • Can start trading even before CD ends

  • Play 10km (6.21 mi) distance from your trading partner.

  • 1 additional candy per trade.

Here are some additional features to keep in mind about trading:

  • Players are limited to 100 trades + 1 special trade per day. This is reset after your phone goes past midnight.

  • Swapping a Shiny will count as a Special Trade and can also be done once daily.

  • Pick a trade partner you have high friendship with. IV floor increases with friendship tier.

    • Great Friendship- 2/2/2 IV floor

    • Ultra Friendship- 3/3/3 IV floor

    • Best Friendship 5/5/5 IV floor

  • Pokemon caught farther than 10km (6.21 mi) apart award 2 candy when traded.

  • Lucky Pokemon have an IV floor of 12/12/12

    • Lucky Pokemon trades are more common when trading older Pokemon.

    • Accounts with less than 10 Lucky Pokemon can guarantee a Lucky trade by trading away a Pokemon from July or August of 2016. Players with access to guaranteed Luckies should likely skip trading during Cyndaquil CD.

The Technicals: Catch Rate and IV Checking

Cyndaquil will likely have its Base Catch Rate changed to 40% as we have seen with previous CD spawns.

Our easy-to-use catch rate calculator can be found here if you’d like to do your own calculations. Here are the breakdowns for players with a Gold Fire badge. These calculations also assume maximum radius Great! throws. Your ability to reliably throw into smaller bonus radiuses may also increase throughout the day, increasing your catch rate. Some players may also obtain their Gold Steel badge throughout the event.

  • Cyndaquil levels 1-7 have a 89% chance or higher to be caught with a curved Poke Ball Great! Throw. Poke Ball Pinap anything under 122 CP and consider up to 162 CP.
  • Cyndaquil level 12 and below have a 90% chance or higher to be caught with a curved Great Ball Great! Throw. Great Ball Pinap anything under 214 CP and consider up to 285 CP.
  • Cyndaquil level 20 and below have a 90% chance or higher to be caught with a curved Ultra Ball Great! Throw. Ultra Ball Pinap anything under 358 CP and consider up to 475 CP.
  • Even a level 35 Cyndaquil has an 82% chance to be caught per throw using a curved Great! Throw Ultra Ball, allowing for proficient throwers to utilize Pinap berries every throw. Consider not quick-catching Cyndaquil above 358 CP or using a Razz Berry while doing so.

Throwing with no bonus will eat though your resources faster making it worthwhile to learn how to consistently throw Great! Throws (+ video link) The following will result in a 90% catch rate with curve balls and no throw bonus;

  • Poke Ball Cyndaquil levels 1-4 (65-87 CP and below)
  • Great Ball Cyndaquil levels 8 and below (141-187 CP and below)
  • Ultra Ball Cyndaquil levels 13 and below (232-308 CP and below)
  • Ultra Ball Razz Berry Cyndaquil levels 25 and below (447-593 CP and below)
  • Great Ball Golden Razz Berries can be used on higher level Cyndaquil to ensure a 90% catch rate per throw.

The following string can help you quickly check for any perfect IV Cyndaquil:

Pokemon with these CP are not guaranteed to be 100% IV but this could help you narrow that search.

You can quickly check a Pokemon’s level by how much Star Dust it would cost to power up. This cost is halved for Lucky Pokemon.

28/29 - 4500

30/31 - 5000

31/32 - 6000

33/34 - 7000

35 - 8000

Have a Blast

Looks like Community Day is blasting off again this month with something for everyone. Newer players can look forward to double XP and a new dex entry. An exclusive moveset will improve the collections for new players needing fire attackers, and hardcore players looking for ways to spice up their battle parties.

6x Stardust is not to be underestimated. The possibility to gain hundreds of thousands of Stardust is incredibly realistic this Community Day. Set your goals high, but remember to have fun and not get burnt out and yes these puns are recycled from Charmander's Community Day. Nevertheless, this Community Day is sure to be a blast!
