Community Day December 2019

Season's greetings! Once again, we're nearing the close of a full year of Community Days. As we look back on Niantic's offerings for 2019, it's time to enjoy one last weekend with the Ghost of Christmas Past, as we get to relive them again! And to sweeten the deal even more, we also get a visit from our 2018 friends! While a more in-depth guide is on the way, we wanted to take a deeper look at the calendar that makes up this event so that we're all ready to make the most of this year-end gift!

Special Note: Shiny Pokemon

Last year, we did see a bit of a boost to the shiny rates of Community Day Pokemon, so it's entirely possible that we may see it again this year. If you missed a shiny or just want to collect more, it's worth being out and catching for the duration of the event!

Event Bonuses:

  • All Past Community Day Pokemon can Learn Their Community Day Moves on Evolution

These Pokemon are the headliners for this event, and this is an exciting chance for newer players to gather some powerful Pokemon for their teams, and for older players to shore up their existing collections. Keep in mind that Community Day Moves are only available from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time on Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th, so be sure to set your clock and get your evolutions done before the deadline!

Interested in seeing what the general consensus is about what Pokemon are the top goals for this Community Day? Take a look at our PvE and PvE tier lists. And please keep one thing in mind for this event; even if you don't play PvP now, you might just give it a try down the line, so consider grabbing a few of the big names while you can!

Special Note: Eevee

Speaking of PvP: While Last Resort doesn't have any real use in PvE games, a handful of of Eevee's evolutions do very well in select PvP formats if they have access to it alongside a normally available move. Among these, Umbreon stands as a top pick. If you want a Last Resort Umbreon (or Espeon for that matter), then make sure that you begin walking it soon in order to reach the buddy distance needed to evolve, and make sure that you evolve it at the correct time of day!

Saturday, December 14 Community Day

This will be the first day of our year-end celebration, and it mainly focuses on obtaining the Community Day Pokemon that are featured in the event. Note that these bonuses do have a set window, so be sure to plan accordingly!

Thoughts on Saturday's Offerings

This is the first day for stocking up on anything that you've missed, and should probably be spent focusing on your main goals in order to raise your odds of hitting them. The highlights of the bonus window are Torchic and Bagon, though any could be good if you have use for them. If you're after last year's offerings then be prepared to hit up raids and hatch eggs all day. This does mean that you're more likely to get a high-IV Pokemon than normal, but it may also cost a few coins for raid passes and incubators.

Sunday, December 15 Community Day

Hopefully by this point you'll already have your catch goals met and will be able to just enjoy the bonuses, shiny hunt, or otherwise enjoy the event. Either way, Sunday brings a lot of the same, minus a few changes.

Just like on Saturday, we also have a shorter, 3-hour window with even more bonuses.

Thoughts on Saturday's Offerings

Very similar to Saturday's Community Day, but it does have a few key differences: the egg pool for the day is different, and the offerings for the bonus window is different. Overall, it's still a great day with great offerings, and should leave a lot of players very happy!

Finishing Up

This event's schedule is a bit confusing. It's actually two events, each with an event within an event! Figuring out what's what and setting your goals is the real key to success for this very special Community Day It's our chance to relive what we may have missed, and our little window into what December 2020 may just end up looking like. Once this one is gone and done, it will be time to prepare for a new year of new Community Days. Maybe by this time next year we'll finally have that highly-requested method of TMing Community Day moves onto our already-evolved Pokemon? Please make it happen, Niantic!
