PVE Overview

The king of Pokemon GO: Mewtwo is here. It's stats are strong enough that it once persuaded trainers to take off work and pursue EX eligible gyms for a chance at capturing the Genetic Pokemon.

Mewtwo sits solidly among the highly ranked legandary Pokemon. Mewtwo was the first Pokemon to break the 4k CP threshold and earning itself a 9% nerf to all stats. Despite this, Mewtwo boasts the largest attack stat in the game before Deoxys and the largest bulk among any Psychic types.

Mewtwo has many claims with the highest Psychic-type DPS now and quite possibly for all-time thanks to Psystrike, hitting insane damage levels without breaking a sweat. Additionally, Shadow Ball Mewtwo provides a great 2-bar generalist Charge Move, placing it as a top raid counter even if its Quick Move is resisted

Mewtwo's introduction to regular tier 5 raids (as what is essentially a tier 6 raid) added 3 new elemental charge moves to Mewtwo's repertoire, furthering its utility and type-coverage. Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt + Mewtwo's high attack stat give the Psychic-type Pokemon the ability to act as a de facto Fire, Ice, or Electric type.

Mewtwo's return in September 2019 gave it access to its signature attack, Psystrike. While this move sat unused and with outright bad stats deep in the game's file for years for years, just barely beating out Psychic in simulations, a buff prior to release has given Mewtwo a gigantic lead above and beyond its fellow Psychic types and allowed it to re-claim its throne as king.

Focus Blast also puts up a reasonable Fighting-type impression with higher bulk and better defensive coverage for knocking down Normal-types like Blissey and others commonly found in gyms.

For its continued use and versatility, Mewtwo tops our rankings and remains a great investment.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Psycho Cut OR Confusion + Shadow Ball* and Focus Blast

The legacy Shadow Ball (100 power, 55 energy) is as powerful as ever, hitting almost everything for neutral. Focus Blast (150 power, 75 energy), then covers any Normal-types that would resist Shadow Ball. More importantly it nukes down Melmetal, Tyranitar, and Dialga. Psycho Cut (1.5 DPT/4.5 EPT) gives Mewtwo the ability to hit its charged move faster, whereas Confusion (4 DPT/3 EPT) hits much harder through shields.

Ice Beam (90 power, 55 energy) is also an option to allow Mewtwo to take down Dragonite, Groudon, and Rayquaza more easily.

Psycho Cut OR Confusion + Shadow Ball* and Psychic

Somewhat more focused than the previous set, Psychic (90 Power/55 Energy)  is a solid STAB move and is substantially less expensive than Focus Blast, especially when paired with Confusion. It also sports a small chance to lower enemy defense, which makes Mewtwo all the more terrifying when it happens to land.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: N/A / 5

Unless you can get yourself a Lv13 Mewtwo (you can’t), Mewtwo can’t be used in Great League.

Ultra League: 2 / 5

Mewtwo’s incredibly high attack stat makes it incredibly squishy. Its mediocre matchup against Giratina does it no favors either.

Master League: 4 / 5

Mewtwo’s incredibly powerful and versatile collection of charged give it a very strong presence in Master League, though it’s not the meta-defining threat it was initially considered to be. Still, it hits hard, and it hits a lot of the metagame. If nothing else, Mewtwo with a second charged move can still be useful in raids, making that 100k dust investment worthwhile on two fronts
