PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Frost Breath is the better fast move for offense.
  • Ice Shard is slightly behind, but the two are very close in performance.
  • Triple Axel shares identical typing with Cryogonal's fast moves to fulfill an Ice-type role.
  • Aurora Beam is weaker.
  • Solar Beam performs the best in neutral fights, but this isn't the best use of Cryogonal.
  • Night Slash is bad and doesn't synergize much with Cryogonal's moves.
  • Water Pulse is even worse for offense.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Ice Shard is marginally better than Frost Breath, but it's a very small difference.
  • Night Slash as a 3-bar move hits frequently and is the hardest to dodge.
  • Water Pulse provides coverage against Rock and Fire-type attackers, but has a late damage window.
  • Triple Axel is good, but it leaves Cryogonal easily taken down by anything that resists Ice Type moves.
  • Aurora Beam is very slow for defense and is way too easily dodged.
  • Solar Beam is less likely to be used before fainting, and is so predictable that dodging would be laughable.

PVE Overview

Among the Ice Types in Pokemon Go, Cryogonal is definitely nothing special. If you need to freeze something, look to another Pokemon.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Ice Shard + Night Slash and Triple Axel or Water Pulse

Ice Shard gives both fair damage and solid energy gain, and is thus the fast move of choice.

Triple Axel gives Cryogonal a self-buffing move with solid damage output to allow it to snowball pretty quickly, making it a bit of a must-have move for giving Cryogonal a niche. Night Slash gives Cryogonal an interesting niche, and some solid rapid fire Dark-type damage. Water Pulse isn't outstanding, but it gives Cryogonal counter-coverage against Fire and Rock Types, making it situationally worth considering.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1 / 5

Cryogonal matches up impressively poorly against the Great League metagame, even losing matchups you'd think it would win. It requires Aurora Beam to beat Altaria, and can barely even take down Tropius despite double super effective Ice Shard damage. If you're looking for an Ice-type, Glalie and Froslass probably do it better.

Ultra League: 2 / 5

The increased prevalence of Dragon-types in Ultra League help Cryogonal out a bit, but not much. It can consistently beat things like Dragonite and Flygon, and actually manages to take out Dialga in the 1-shield matchup. However, a poor matchup against both Giratina-Altered and Fighting-types leave this snowflake not feeling too special.

Master League: 0 / 5

It beats Groudon with shields up, which is...something? Rough losses to most of the common Master League Pokémon prevent Cryogonal from being a particularly useful or interesting pick. As such, it's probably better to look to another Ice-type, if you choose to run one.
