Overview

On November 3rd, Gengar will appear in a Special Raid Challenge for 3 hours. Based on pictures put out by Niantic, this appears to be a tier 4 version of Gengar. It should be a feasible duo for many players. While the Gengar you catch from a raid will have Lick and Psychic, the expectation is that the ones you battle will have their usual moves.

As a Tier 3 boss, Gengar is a fairly easy solo. With 2.5x HP and higher stats, Tier 4 Gengar has far fewer options viable for a duo. Trainers without a couple of powered up Mewtwo may find this challenge difficult, as the remaining counters specialize against 1 or 2 movesets. You may need 2 teams: one for Shadow Ball and another for Focus Blast.

Special Note

This version of Gengar has not been available since its initial raid day, and this guide reflects the game at that time. In the event that Gengar returns to Tier 4 for any reason, this guide will be updated to reflect updates to the game at the time.

Approach

Team composition

  • Use those Mewtwo! It's the best counter by far, regardless of moveset.

  • Use Psychic-types, Gengar vs. Focus Blast; Tyranitar vs. Shadow Ball
  • Compared to soloing normal Gengar, there is less flexibility in counters

  • Sludge Bomb in cloudy weather will be about as tough as Shadow Ball

Dodging strategy

  • Dodging can help if it lets you use 1 more Future Sight or Shadow Ball

  • Expect to relobby, although you may not have to with an ideal matchup
