Overview

Giratina was the first Gen 4 legendary to appear in raids. It is an easy trio with many meta Pokemon, Mega Evolutions, and Shadows beating the clock with a wide margin… even at level 30. This guide will focus instead on winning with two players. Most of our listed Supreme counters handle the duo well, while the Good Counters will generally need a Weather Boost and/or Mega Boost to make the cut.

Approach

Team composition

  • Plan on bringing a solid Mega Evolution to this raid, as the boost can make a huge difference.
  • Use Dragons against Ghost Type movesets, Ghosts against Dragon Type movesets, and Dark Types against everything.

Dodging strategy

  • An occasional dodge can help, especially if it helps avoid a relobby

Best Raid Boss Counters

Mega Evolution Counters
Mega Gengar Mega Gengar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

If something is weak to Ghost, then you can bet that this grinning ghost will be here to lead it into the afterlife. Mega Gengar is obscenely powerful, and can rack up tremendous total damage most of the time, even when it's fighting a Ghost Type moveset. In general, Mega Gengar is the Pokemon to have for this raid.

Mega Banette Mega Banette
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Basically Diet Mega Gengar, Mega Banette is still a strong Ghost that can be helpful for this raid. This should generally be used as a budget option or if you lack Mega Gengar altogether.

Mega Latios Mega Latios
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

If you need a Dragon Mega, then Mega Latios is generally the way to go. However, it's also weak to both of Giratina's STAB moves, so it can also be a risky pick.

Mega Absol Mega Absol
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Absol is the DPS Dark Type option. Despite being a bit frail, its double-resistance to Ghost Type moves makes it notable, and keeps it very relevant in this raid.

Mega Houndoom Mega Houndoom
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Houndoom is fairly close to Mega Absol, but it's also weak to Ancient Power.

Mega Latias Mega Latias
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Basically Mega Latios, but with more bulk and less DPS. Still weak to most of Giratina's moves, though.

Mega Charizard X Mega Charizard X
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A solid option for a Dragon Type counter, just remember that it's also weak to Ancient Power.

Mega Gyarados Mega Gyarados
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
Bite Crunch Best

The single bulkiest Mega Evolution in this raid. Mega Gyarados can tank for a very long time and keeps up very solid damage along the way. A great choice if you know that your raid group favors Dark Type counters for how long it keeps the boost alive. That said, it's a bit riskier for a duo run due to Dark Type's generally inferior DPS.

Supreme Counters
Shadow Salamence Shadow Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

It's a dragon, so of course mega Salamence will be here. While not as powerful as Mega Gengar, this Gen-3 dragon can cause serious damage while on the field. Just be aware of its weakness to Ancient Power in conjunction with the standard Dragon weakness.

Dragonite Dragonite
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Basically Shadow Salamence, but with lower DPS and higher TDO.

ShadowWeavile Shadow Weavile
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

One of the first big-name Shadows, Shadow Weavile is a bit frail, but it definitely delivers in terms of DPS. But, like above, beware of Ancient Power.

Good Counters

Shadow Latios Shadow Latios
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A bit risky due to its weakness to both of Giratina's types, but still a very capable Dragon that can score respectable DPS.

Shadow Mewtwo Shadow Mewtwo
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Ah, now this takes me back! Using Shadow Ball, Shadow Mewtwo stands as a powerful attacker that can score heavy blows with ease. Just watch out for Ghost Type movesets.

ShadowSwine Shadow Mamoswine
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Mamoswine may not be the ultimate performer for this raid, but it's definitely worth a raid spot, especially given the fact that it's one of the few counters that doesn't have a weakness to at least one of Giratina's moves.

Rayquaza Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Behold the ancient dragon, king of raids of the past. Behold its glory and weep!

While not as oppressive as it once was, Rayquaza remains a very solid option for this raid, and can definitely perform so long as you mind its Dragon and Rock Type weaknesses.

Salamence Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Ah, another genuine classic. Salamence has performance that rivals Rayquaza, making it a great option for this raid.

Dragonite Dragonite
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Speaking of classics, say hello to the one true classic attacker itself! Dragonite may be outclassed nowadays, but it's still a work-horse of a Pokemon that can put in the work if given the chance.
