A Haunting Night: Haunter Spotlight Hour

Submit Feedback or Error

Tonight is the night of our weekly Spotlight Hour in Pokemon Go, an event ranging from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. During this time, we will see a particular Pokemon spawn en-masse at levels similar to Community Days alongside a specific bonus that all players taking part in the event can enjoy. However, this is an event that comes about quite literally every single week and has for a few years now, so why are we bothering with an article for this particular event?

Because tonight's featured Pokemon is Haunter, and the featured bonus is 2x Catch Stardust.

Haunter Spotlight Hour

So why is this important? Because Haunter is a second-stage Pokemon, meaning it gives more Stardust than most, and this is doubled by the event itself.

Base Catch Stardust Bonus Stardust Bonus + Star Piece Bonus + Star Piece + Weather
300 600 900 1,125

This is a particularly high amount of Stardust-per-catch, making this iteration of our weekly event far more attractive than most. However, this isn't quite as simple as it may seem:

A Word of Caution

As a second-stage Pokemon, Haunter not only sports higher Stardust gains, but a lower base catch-rate as well. Haunter only has a 20% base Catch rate, which is substantially lower than the 40% rate that its pre-evolution, Gastly, has. So does this mean that every catch attempt only has a 20% chance of being successful? No, Pokemon Go has many variable on that front, so your best bet is to check out our Catch Calculator to figure out what your actual odds of success are:

Is Haunter Worth Catching?

So stardust aside, is it worth hunting for a high-IV Haunter during this event? The short answer is "yes"! Haunter's Evolution, Gengar, is a fairly strong Ghost Type attacker, and taking it even farther than that, Mega Gengar is one of the absolute strongest things in Pokemon Go, even when taking into consideration all generations. Basically, every player should have the goal of raising at least one high-IV Gengar.

Considerations For The Hunt

With a ton of Stardust on the line, it's pretty important to catch as many Haunter as quickly as possible, so here are a few tips for making the most of this evening:

  • Use Ultra/Great Balls whenever possible, and hit up every Pokestop you can to refill your bag.
  • Turn off the auto-catch function of your Go Plus if you intend to manually catch, as it has low odds of success in this case. However, do keep it on for Pokestop farming!
  • Don't hesitate to throw out Golden Razz Berries for high-IV Haunters, and don't forget Pinap Berries if you need Gastly candy.
  • Quick Catching can be a huge help here, as it will allow you to quickly skim a massive number of Haunter without stopping, then double-back to pick up whatever you may have missed.
