Overview

Mega Ampharos hits hard and is hit hard by many of its counters. Hitting the DPS needed for a duo is fairly easy, as many of the counters on this list more than surpass the 25 DPS needed, but TDO can be a bit tricky. Dragon Types take the lead in this raid due to their massive DPS and Electric Type resistance, Ground Types sport a double-resistance to Electric Type moves, and the top options can definitely compete with the Dragons. Finally, Ice Types... definitely exist.

Approach

Team composition

  • A mix of Dragons and Ground Types can make this raid substantially easier.

  • Front-load DPS options to maximize damage

Battling strategy

  • Align counters to match the type of any Mega Evolutions that any raiders may be using.

  • Dodging is definitely a great idea, especially when facing powerful moves like Zap Cannon and Focus Blast, both of which are easy to dodge.

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Rayquaza Mega Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The undisputed lord of damage, Mega Rayquaza boasts an outstanding TDO in conjunction with the best DPS in the game. It's hard to overstate just how great it is here, as its raw power is very much solo-worthy. While not the undisputed best option for this raid, it's absolutely never a bad choice, and is arguably the best Mega Evolution option outside of the solo.

Primal Groudon Primal Groudon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Primal Groudon is possibly the best Pokemon in this raid for the solo. It not only has the DPS to do the work, it also has the highest TDO among all of Mega Ampharos' counters, making it easy-mode when setting up for a solo, especially in clear weather.

Mega Garchomp Mega Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

...note the word "possibly" above. Mega Garchomp's DPS is slightly behind Primal Groudon, but its triple-resistance to Mega Ampharos' Electric Type moves makes it potentially able to outlast even the Ground titan itself For this reason, it's 100% on a par with Primal Groudon, and very much worth utilizing.

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Salamence Mega Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While no longer the dragon king, Mega Salamence is still a solid Dragon Type attacker that can still work wonders here.

Mega Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While we can't really recommend other Fairy Types for this raid to any great degree, but Mega Gardevoir itself is still solid in its own right.

Mega Latios Mega Latios
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Often overlooked, but Mega Latios is a strong Dragon Type that works well regardless.

Supreme Counters

Shadow Garchomp Shadow Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The best non-Mega counter for this raid, Garchomp can leverage its triple-resistance to Electric Type attacks to make Mega Ampharos a joke.

Shadow Salamence Shadow Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Salamence lacks an Electric Type resistance and doesn't appreciate Power Gem. However, it's still an outstanding DPS option.

Shadow Dragonite Shadow Dragonite
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A bit lower on DPS, but with a bit more TDO as a trade-off.

ShadowSwine Shadow Mamoswine
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While normally on the frail side, Shadow Mamoswine's double-resistance to Electric Type attacks goes a long way.

shadow_excadrill Shadow Excadrill
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Capable of running through pretty much anything that Mega Ampharos can throw at it, Shadow Excadrill remains an absolutely outstanding Ground Type that causes massive damage.
