Update: 8/21

  • Details on Mega Energy
  • Details on Mega Raids
  • Limitations on Mega Raids (we may not be able to remote!)
  • The short-term ban on Mega Evolutions from the GBL
  • and so much more!

Take a look at the Pokeminers Redit Thread to read more!

Original Post

Our friends at Pokeminers are hard at work as always, digging up the latest bits of information hidden in the newly released update to Pokemon Go! Click on their name and show them a bit of support for all that they do, because they've just managed to dig up something extremely exciting: the first bits of information on the upcoming Mega Evolution system!

Please note that this information has been datamined, not officially revealed by Niantic. As such, it may not be final and can be changed without notice.

Mega Evolution Badges

Two different badges; one for total unique mega evolutions performed, and one for total mega evolutions performed.

Mega Raids

This one is extremely interesting: it seems that we're getting Mega Raids! While we've already been told that our existing Pokemon will be able to Mega Evolve, it looks like these raids have some special features, including a unique reward list (more on that next). Perhaps Mega Raids will be a key to unlocking Mega Evolution in our existing Pokemon? It also looks like completing them quickly will grant more items, meaning our recent investments in Shadow Pokemon are probably going to pay off soon! ...probably.

Mega Evolution Icons and Items

This is extremely revealing and interesting! First we have the generic Mega Evolution icon, second is what Pokeminers is describing as coins, including one for the journal, and finally we have Mega Candy! This could very well be what we actually use to Mega Evolve!

Mega Evolution Details

Based on these, we can assume the following:

  • Mega evolution is temporary, just like in the main series. It will also have sub-division for X and Y formes, so Charizard and Mewtwo rejoice!
  • Mega evolution will need some form of quest or research line to unlock
  • Mega evolutions MAY see a straight boost similar to Shadow Pokemon or Weather Boosts instead of following the Main Series stat-boosts. Maybe.
  • Mega Evolutions CP will change when they evolve (possibly already putting the previous point to rest), and this CP change will be highlighted in a different color apparently

That's Not All!

While we're just highlighting what we feel are the most relevant bits of information on the upcoming Mega Evolution system, our overview is very incomplete! If you want to see the full list, take a look at Pokeminers' twitter accountand check out the full teardown below!
