PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Counter is generally superior to Metal Claw, wielding higher DPS and better coverage.

  • Shadow Claw is just slightly behind Counter in terms of neutral damage, but it also has a very different effectiveness profile and comes out very fast, making it easier to dodge with.

  • Close Combat is Ursaring’s most meta relevant move when paired with Counter.

  • Play Rough notably beats Close Combat vs. Dark-types (except for Tyranitar).

  • Hyper Beam deals high neutral damage on account of its raw power and STAB, but the lack of Super Effective damage makes inferior most of the time.

  • Return is fast and deals consistent damage, but is weaker than Hyper Beam in general. It also has the issue of not being able to deal Super Effective damage.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Counter is often superior to Metal Claw on account of having higher power.

  • Shadow Claw's damage is a bit lower than Counter, but its potential counter-coverage means it still has a good use on a defending Ursaring.

  • Play Rough, a 2-bar charge move, provides counter coverage against incoming Fighting-types.

  • Close Combat is more likely than Hyper Beam to land a clean hit on attackers.

  • Return comes out quickly, but its low damage is inferior for defense.

PVE Overview

Ursaring is a Fighting-type attacker stuck in a Normal-type’s bear-shaped body. Were it to have STAB to its Fighting-type moves, it would be among the best attackers of that type in the game. As is, it’s merely decent - if you want to be reliably 2-manning Absol and Tyranitar raids, consider investing in true Fighting type attackers, but Ursaring can fill out that last hole in your team.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Shadow Claw + Close Combat and Play Rough

Ursaring's primary role in Ultra and Master League is as a counter to Giratina-Origin (and to a lesser degree Giratina-Altered), double resisting Ghost-type attacks, so Shadow Claw is your fast move of choice.

There are better options for Counter users, and you still have Close Combat as useful coverage for the many relevant Steel-types. Play Rough rounds out the moveset with a nuke for Dragons as well as for Ursaring's Fighting-type counters. Hyper Beam demands too much energy to use. 

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Ursaring performs quite well against Ghost-types thanks to its double resistance as a Normal-type Pokemon. However this is mostly the only reason to pick Ursaring, since it struggles against the rest of the meta due to its poor bulk and inefficient charge moves. 

Ultra League: 2 / 5

Up in Ultra, where Giratina reigns supreme, Ursaring begins to pick up a powerful niche, doing a great job at walling the renegade dragon's mono-Ghost moveset and swinging back for super effective damage with Shadow Claw and Play Rough. However Ursaring tends to struggle against the rest of the meta, and Dark-types have an additional advantage against Psychic-types specifically. 

Master League: 2 / 5

In Master League, Giratina-Origin becomes even more prevalent than in Ultra, which gives Ursaring another bump in utility. That said, as before, it's still a niche counter, which limits its utility.
