PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • You almost always want Sucker Punch in any situation that you’d use Cacturne.
  • Dark Pulse shares typing with Sucker Punch to make a decent Dark-type moveset.
  • Grass Knot is one of the best charge moves in the game, compensating for lack of fast move synergy.
  • Dynamic Punch is great, but best left to Fighting-types.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Poison Jab slightly outdamages Sucker Punch, but the latter gains energy faster.
  • All of Cacturne’s charge moves are great for defense, even if Cacturne itself isn’t. Grass Knot may be the worst, being widely resisted and slightly easier to dodge.

PVE Overview

Gen 3 introduced not one, but two Grass / Dark type Pokemon. Cacturne is strictly worse than Shiftry, having lower DPS movesets despite higher Atk and somehow even less bulk.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Poison Jab OR Sucker Punch+Grass Knot and Dark Pulse

Poison Jab is generally the superior option thanks to its 3 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 3.5 EPT (Energy Per Turn). However, Succer Punch has 2.5 DPT and 3.5 EPT, meaning it's actually statistically the same as Poison Jab after STAB bonus, and is viable as well. Grass Knot (90 Power/50 Energy) is a great STAB move that hits surprisingly hard, while Dark Pulse (80 Power/50 Energy) is a slightly less powerful move with wider coverage.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1 / 5

Cacturne is more-or-less a worse Shiftry in the Great League, and it sadly has no real utility in the tier.

Ultra League: 1.5 / 5

Still not a good Pokemon, Cacturne at least has a few notable wins in the Ultra League. However, everything that it does can be done better by other Pokemon.

Ultra League: 0 / 5

Cacturne is entirely outclassed in the Ultra League.
