PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Fire Spin and Flamethrower is Heatran’s optimal mono-Fire attacking set.

  • Fire Blast is a bit behind in DPS, but also less efficient as a 1-bar move.

  • Bug Bite is the worse move in the situations where Heatran is useful.

  • Iron Head is better for attacking Ice and Fairy-types.

  • Stone Edge has no role on gym or raid offense.

PVE Overview

Heatran is something of a niche attacker in Pokemon Go. While its DPS doesn’t keep up with big-names like Moltres or most of the powerful Shadows, Heatran is the bulkiest Fire attacker to date. It also has 10 resistances, 6 of which are double resistances. and among those double resistances are included every single type that is weak to Fire in the entire game. Because of this, it anchors Steel, Bug, Fairy, Ice, and Grass raids to a degree that is unrivaled, but its DPS is definitely behind the other fire-types.

In the main series, Heatran has its own signature attack named Magma Storm, meaning it may see greater power in the future.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Fire Spin + Flamethrower and Stone Edge or Iron Head

Fire Spin sports slightly above average energy generation, and takes also takes advantage of STAB.

Flamethrower is recommended due to its synergy in Heatran's role as a Fire-type, in addition to benefiting from STAB. Stone Edge costs the same amount of energy, and it also provides wide coverage. Iron Head gets STAB and costs the least amount of energy, and provides some useful offensive coverage against things that would otherwise resist Stone Edge.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 0 / 5

Heatran's CP is too high to enter the Great League

Ultra League: 2 / 5

Heatran has the ability to counter a few big-name Pokemon in the Ultra League, making it a niche pick, but it's not terribly effective outside of its niche. The presence of Registeel makes it severely outclassed as a Steel-type, and it doesn't manage to beat it even with the Fire coverage.

Master League: 3 / 5

Relying heavily on its typing to succeed, Heatran's 10 resistances (including a double resistance to Fairy) does it huge favors in Master League, allowing it to defeat Dialga and Togekiss, pressure other Steel-type Pokemon, and wall Lugia. While these are all solid qualities, Heatran suffers heavy competition from fellow Steel-type Pokemon such as Melmetal, Excadrill, and Metagross, who all share similar positive matchups but have either less weaknesses or greater strengths than Heatran. Melmetal has less weaknesses and is far more spammy, exerting more shield pressure. Excadrill's insanely powerful moveset allows it to run away with games when given an advantageous matchup. Metagross is the only Steel-type option capable of countering Zacian. All in all, this leaves Heatran without much of a standout niche, although it is adequate at simply fulfilling its Steel-type duties.
