PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Frost Breath and Ice Shard perform similarly, but Frost Breath has some slight advantages.

  • Avalanche is a potent 2-bar charge move that outperforms Blizzard, Cloyster's next best charge move.

  • Hydro Pump, while being a great move with STAB, doesn't share the same typing as Cloyster's fast moves.

  • Aurora Beam and Icy Wind deal mediocre damage with long cooldown. There's no reason to use these moves.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Between Ice Shard and Frost Breath, Ice Shard does more damage on defense.

  • Avalanche is the obvious superior charge move due to having 2 bars, STAB, and high power.

  • Hydro Pump is off-type with Cloyster's fast moves and hard to dodge, but Cloyster may not get it off.

  • Aurora Beam and Icy Wind are functional for having multiple bars, but aren't nearly as good as Avalanche.

  • Compared to Avalanche and Hydro Pump, Blizzard is worse on defense in nearly all respects.

PVE Overview

Cloyster is a fairly common Pokemon that can provide solid Ice-type damage. However, it's badly outclassed in this capacity by Mamoswine, Glaceon, and Weavile. Although Cloyster has one of the highest Def stats in the game, it's backed up by embarrassingly low HP, which makes Cloyster's bulk merely above average. It's not a complete pushover on defense due to its typing, which is difficult to counter outright.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Ice Shard+Avalanche and Hydro Pump

Cloyster's best quick move is Ice Shard without a doubt due to its great mix of 3 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 3.33 EPT (Energy Per Turn). It provides valuable ice-type coverage and pairs well with Avalanche (90 Power/45 Energy) to grant cloyster a fairly powerful and fairly easy to charge ice-type offensive. Hydro Pump (130 Power/75 Energy) grants good complimentary coverage and a threatening attack to shield-bait with, allowing it to finish off Cloyster's preferred PVP set nicely.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1.5 / 5

Cloyster is a niche pick in the Great League. Its above average bulk and great attacks allow it to perform well in several neutral matchups and take down a number of large threats such as Altaria, but other Pokemon can perform the same function with more general utility

Ultra League: 3.5 / 5

Cloyster's typing, moveset, and stats all come together to make it a strong threat in the Ultra League. With a CP that caps just over 2500, a good Cloyster comes out near maxed, which helps its power tremendously. Cloyster is capable of taking down a number of huge threats in the league, including Lugia, Dragonite, and both flavors of Giratina. However, while Water and Ice cover each other fairly well, Cloyster is still beaten by other top threats such as Lucario. While not a top-threat based on its own merits, Cloyster is good at countering the meta and tearing holes in the opponent's team for its team-mates. If you play the Ultra League, Cloyster is a Pokemon worth investing in if you have need of its talents.

Master League: 2 / 5

While not as wide as before, Cloyster's niche still exists in the Master League despite its relatively low CP. It can still dismantle Dragonite and punch holes in Lugia, and on top of this it also threatens to KO other huge threats in the tier such as Groudon and Garchomp. However, Regice is generally a stronger pick for most of the same matchups that you'd use Clyster for, unless you also have good use for a STAB Hydro Pump.
