PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Confusion is on par with Zen Headbutt; the former has slightly higher DPS, while the latter offers more maneuverability.

  • Psychic clearly outclasses Future Sight in every aspect.

  • Psyshock is generally inferior; its cooldown is too long for a 3 bar move.

  • Shadow Ball is useful for battling other Psychic-types, but is also a legacy move.

  • Focus Blast is generally outclassed by Future Sight, but performs well in certain matchups, ex. Rock-types

  • None of the elemental punches (Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch) are viable for Hypno on offense, except for gyms.

  • Because Hypno needed more moves, Return can be obtained by purifying a Shadow Hypno, but this move has no real use.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Confusion is superior to Zen Headbutt, dealing higher defensive DPS.

  • Psyshock is generally preferred for its 3 bar frequency.

  • Psychic is great as a non-legacy 2 bar move.

  • Future Sight is just inferior.

  • Shadow Ball offers wide neutral coverage, but has a relatively late damage window.

  • Focus Blast is nonviable due to its 1 bar nature and late damage window.

  • Any of the elemental punches (Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch) could be used due to their low energy cost as 3-bar moves.

  • Return comes out very fast and is insanely hard to dodge, but its power is very low.

PVE Overview

Though its lackluster ATK precludes it from any kind of attacking role, Hypno’s DEF, HP, and moveset are well tailored to the role of gym defender. Access to the optimal Confusion / Future Sight offer general STAB use, but its other charge moves provide great counter coverage, so Ghost or Dark-type counters may be taken by surprise.

Do note, Shadow Ball and Focus Blast have fairly late damage windows and thus are more exploitable. If you have spare Hypno lying around, feel free to throw one into a gym, but there are more efficient tanks to be investing Stardust in than this one.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Confusion + Shadow Ball* and Focus Blast

Shadow Ball covers Hypno's weakness to Ghost-type Pokemon while also giving it a huge advantage when facing other Psychic-type Pokemon. Focus Blast gives you some ability to answer Pokémon like Umbreon, but more importantly lets you actually stand a chance vs Bastiodon and Probopass.

Confusion + Shadow Ball* and Thunder Punch

Swapping out Focus Blast for Thunder Punch does you no favors against Bastiodon or Probopass (almost completely sacrificing those matchups), though it meaningfully improves your performance against Skarmory and Azumarill. Additionally, in general matchups it gives you more of an ability to shield bait.

Confusion + Psyshock* and Focus Blast

Psyshock is one of the best Psychic-type charge moves in the game, while Focus Blast offers coverage against Hypno's weakness to Dark-type Pokemon. Consider baiting shields with Psyshock, as Focus Blast's huge 75 energy cost leaves Hypno with no coverage if shielded.

Confusion + Psyshock* and Fire Punch or Ice Punch

The fastest moveset combination possible with legacy Psyshock, though any of the elemental punches can be chosen depending on the PvP format and how you want to play Hypno.

Confusion + Thunder Punch and Focus Blast

If you decide to use a Hypno without legacy moves, this is your best choice. Any of the elemental punches can be chosen depending on the PvP format, with its usage partly being shield-bating. Focus Blast is chosen for its wide coverage, including against Hypno's weakness to Dark-types.

Special Note: Psyshock* Vs. Psychic

As of the September 2018 move rebalance, Psychic is now considered a good attack in PVP. It sports high attack (90) and fair energy cost (55), meaning it can slot into any of the above Psyshock movesets fairly effectively. That said; Psyshock* is generally the superior option if you have it due to its lower energy cost.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 4.5 / 5

Hypno is slow. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because it can still do its job just fine, but it does take a while to get there. With Shadow Ball, it absolutely dominates Medicham, and Focus Blast it's able to hit the Steel tanks very hard. With Thunder Punch, it can knock down some Flying-types and Azumarill. While its main role is as a Medicham counter, it's certainly got power in general, and is a worthy addition to your Great League team. If, of course, you have the elusive Shadow Ball version. If not....maybe look elsewhere.

Ultra League: 1 / 5

Hypno has a maximum CP of 2090 which is insufficient for high performance in Ultra League. Competition from other Psychic types and a weakness to the Giratinas doesn't help it either.

Master League: 0 / 5

Don't use Hypno in Master League.
