PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Poison Sting and Infestation perform similarly in neutral situations.

  • Sludge Bomb is Drapion’s best STAB charged move

  • Crunch is Drapion's second best charged move and should be paired with Bite

  • Fell Stinger can pair with Infestation to make Drapion into a bug attacker, but it's not good at this role.

  • Aqua Tail and Ice Fang have no offensive purpose.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Infestation hits generally harder than Poison Sting. It’s still on par with it even against Pokemon that resist it, such as Machamp.

  • Bite is superior to Poison Sting on defense, but Infestation is still the superior option.

  • Ice Fang can rack up fast damage on common Dragon Type attackers

  • Aqua Tail and Crunch are both 3-bar charged moves that can be tricky to dodge.

  • Fell Stinger is also 3 bar, but is more widely resisted and easier to dodge.

  • Sludge Bomb is more powerful, but won’t be fired as often.

PVE Overview

Like most Poison-types in this game, Drapion seems destined for mediocrity. As an attacker, it has to battle it out with stuff like Beedrill and Nidoqueen. Its half decent tankiness and weird looks might at least make it a fun (suboptimal) alternative to something like Muk to drop in gyms.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Bite or Ice Fang + Aqua Tail and Fell Stinger or Crunch or Sludge Bomb

Bite and Ice Fang both rely on damage output rather than Energy generation, with different targets depending on the typing. That makes Aqua Tail a must as Drapion's most easily reachable charged move (at only 35 Energy). It gets often paired with Fell Stinger which isn't meant to do damage, but rather to double down on the fast move damage by boosting Drapion's Attack by 1 stage at each use. That moveset, however, has the issue of offering very low shield pressure: Crunch and Sludge Bomb will get used less frequently, but when that happens they hit much harder and may come as surprises.

Infestation + Aqua Tail and Crunch or Sludge Bomb

A more diverse moveset with a focus on much faster energy generation from Infestation, which allows Drapion to spam its charge moves and apply heavy shield pressure or shield baiting. The lack of STAB and raw power of Infestation is a different style of play than the above movesets, and is up to the player's preference.

When comparing all of these movesets, one can be more favorable over the other depending on the situation.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 3 / 5

Drapion is more of a well-rounded Pokemon; with no highlights of extraordinary stats or epic movesets, Drapion kind of falls in the middle of the pack in Great League. It isn't the only Pokemon with the interesting Dark/Poison typing, which means it has a lot of competition to fulfill its role. What makes Drapion sort of stand out is its access to Infestation, which gives it not only an energy advantage, but also sells itself as a different typing. Among the Dark-types and Poison-types in this league, Drapion's notable capability to spam very frequent charge moves gives it an edge for players looking to play the game of shield baiting. Overall a decent pick that's gained a lot of popularity in the Silph Arena's Twilight and Nightmare Cups, but its usage mostly remains in those competitions.

Ultra League: 3.5 / 5

With a max CP of 2453 Drapion becomes a rather expensive option for Ultra League, with its peak performance demanding resources to it max out to level 40. For this steep cost, Drapion returns victories against just about every Pokemon with a weakness to its attacks, with the added perk of holding its own against Registeel with the Bite moveset.

Master League: 0 / 5

Drapion doesn't have sufficient stats to perform well in Master League. Most of the wins it will get would be against off-meta picks weak to its typing, which isn't saying much.
