App-Blacklist and Iv calculators

Overlay screenshot calculators have been 100% safe to use, but safe doesnt always mean allowed. I have been under the assumption that they are not allowed, just impossible to detect, therefore safe to use.
With the upcoming App-Blacklist tool that was found in the datamine, they would not be undetected anymore. Im just looking for a clear answer, are calculators allowed or not? I tried to investigate myself, found ton of misinformation both ways.

I don't think anyone really knows at this point (it's debatable if the measure will even work), however, I suspect the real target of the blacklist apps are the ones that facilitate spoofing (GPS hacks etc.), or those that directly interact with the game data.

"Safe" tools like the overlay IV Calculators I personally don't think will be affected but, even if they are targeted, I suspect that the worse comeuppance you'll get is a warning, although repeated infractions may be a different story. Previous anti-cheating methods have generally given the players the opportunity to change their ways, e.g. rendered pokemon un-usable without immediately banning their accounts.

The only thing that overlay apps do is take a screenshot of your phone, recognize the relevant text (cp, hp, dust cost, level arc) and stick it into a formula. Sometimes PokeGenie and Calcy IV cannot give you the exact value so they give you a range. You could do the same thing on this website (among others) if you wanted without the use of an app.

The apps that get you in trouble are the ones that require your Pokemon Go login information. They use this login information to illicitly access Niantic's servers and gain exact iv information.

That doesn't mean this site is legal to use.

It just means that you can't get caught finding exact IVs through a website.

Fair enough. The legality probably depends on how the cp formulas were obtained. If they were provided/determined/derived somehow then I would think that iv calculators are nothing more than just a calculator. I guess if the cp formulas were derived by accessing the game data then technically that would make them against the TOS.

In the end, it's all about the "spirit of the game". Spoofing is clearly against the spirit of the whole "GO" thing. I think tracker maps fall in the same category. However iv checkers and apk mines also are against the rules but they also help further ALL legit players and, in my opinion, only serve to prosper the game.

If you read the tos, you will find nothing in there to suggest it is against the rules to analyze a Pokemon (unless you access Niantic servers to do so). You do not mess with the game nor do you use multiple accounts/devices. You just analyze information provided by the game to you (=cp value, position of the xp bar, power up cost, detailled information provided by the team leader).

Screenshot calculators like PokeGenie are probably not allowed, but it's not traceable. As far as the game knows, you're just taking a screenshot. And there's nothing wrong with taking a screenshot.

I wouldn't worry about it.

If they ban it we would just use a sceondary phone to photograph the gaming phone, totally untracable!

I think Niantic has little to gain by banning screenshot apps, they will only upset a lot of honest players who never really cheat. Make sure they ban bots (for online maps etc), GPS spoofers etc.

I doubt anyone know for sure. Niantic isn't exactly famous for being 100% clear about rules in PoGo.

Last time I read the ToS I can't remember reading anything about, or relevant to, IV calculators and whether they are allowed or not.

There are however calculators that logs into your account and get the info about IV from the game itself and those are not allowed. Probably because they perhaps cause some strain on the servers.

But Niantic has, as far as I know, never said that IV calculators aren't allowed (apart from the previously mentioned of course).

But, as I said, just because there's nothing in the rules and Niantic has in any way even hinted that it's illegal, it doesn't mean you can't get banned.

It's about time they set more specific rules about things many players wonder about. Quite a few use IV Calculators, so why not give us some clear answers.
But hey, it's Niantic we're talking about.

Personally I will continue using IV Calculators such as the one on Poke Assistant and here on Gamepress.
Even if Niantic for some reason decide it's not okay, there's no way they can see if I use it or not, unless they get access to what I do on my phone or on my computer. In which case I will certainly have something to say about it. Me and my lawyer.
