Do gyms reset? DRAGONITE HAS RETURNED

If so, how often because my Dragonite (Dragon Tail/Outrage) has been stuck at a gym for about 3 weeks.

They don't reset...it will return when someone knocks it out of the gym.
I am not sure many would consider it a problem to have a defender 'stuck' in a gym.

Dragonites are attackers, not defenders.

Dragonite is last choice you will put inside gym, if you rlly dont have any other options left.

And to make it more clear for you:
His best attacker is stuck in the gym currently.

They are viable defenders; n00bs often don't have any strong ice Pokemon or don't even know about Dragonite's weakness, advanced players kick out anything anyway.

If you are able to put something into a gym which sits higher than a 3000+ Blissey, then it secures you a long stay there. For this reason, I often put my SW-Dragonites into gyms and keep my only DT-Dragonite for attack.

Then more fool him for placing it in a gym if he needs it to attack - I personally was giving him more credit than making that assumption.
Don't place anything in a gym that you may need.

And to make it clear for you...many choose to place a dragonite in a gym due to it's superior CP, so they may hold their position - hopefully for 3 weeks or more.

I do find it interesting that you claim to know exactly what he has.

EDIT You seem to have made assumptions simply to try to have a go at me, rather than contribute anything positive.

That's simply untrue. How do we even know its his best attacker? Every mon has a counter (albeit not a hard counter in every case) so defense is all relative. Any gym can be taken down by most competent players with enough time and good selection of attacking team. The ease of getting high CP on a dragonite makes one with any moveset a viable defender, especially if you can place it above someone else's Blissey! If (as in the OPs case) it happens to have DT/O then it is also a very capable defender in its own right.

Unless you have a lot of defenders, you should be happy to stick them in a gym...You can use near anything else with lower CP to attack (like Vaps, Eggs, Champ) so stick the Nites in a gym and be happy Dragonite is above all those Blisseys/Snorlax.

Machamp can clear a Snorlax/Blissey faster than a Nite so the Neutral damage Dragonite deals isn't a big deal IMO (spoken as someone who just got a SW/HB nite so maybe I don't know anything).

Precisely. I love my SW/HB dragonite. I don't think I've ever used it as an attacker (well I tried a couple of time back when I first got it maybe 3 months after the game started, but it was never very useful). Yet as a defender its earned me more coins than anything else in my team, simply because it has maintained a high position in safe level 10 gyms that have been progressively shaved over days or weeks. If I had a DT/O 'nite I would definitely power it to the max and be happy to use it as an attacker if it isn't at the top of a gym somewhere, but its main utility would be as a defender. I have since got a couple of other dragonites with better attacking moves. Personally I prefer Hurricane vs Outrage in an attacking 'nite because Outrage is so slow to unwind that (particularly against DG Blissey, or body slam/heavy slam Snorlax) you often take a charge move in return. Hurricane does the same damage per use (although time between uses is slower) against anything that isn't actually weak to dragon moves (i.e. everything in the game other than Dragonite itself and anyone with sense would use an Ice type against dragonite) but is much safer to let off.

Yeah because I'd rather put my 2000 cp slowbro at the bottom of a gym and have it kicked or scraped off immediately instead of putting my dragonite at the top.

Let me make it more clear for
You: he has a high CP Pokémon sitting in a gym earning him coins

3 weeks or 210 free coins... depends how you look at it. It will come home eventually. Meanwhile enjoy the daily coins and buy incubators. Dratini are relatively common in 10km eggs, and you get a good chance of a great one plus 30+ candy each time. I'd happily have my dragonite "stuck" in a gym and (indirectly) helping me incubate more eggs to work towards another.

My only dragonite (for a long time) sat in an out-of-state gym for months, and when I got him back promptly stuck him in another, still earning coins. If the point of having strong attackers is to clear gyms to get coins, then OP should celebrate this accomplishment. Like others have said, high-CP defenders are more rare then capable attackers

This completely...for me at least.

Only 6-7 mons are capable of having high enough CP to sit in stagnant gyms in many areas so like I mentioned in another post, I have no problem with dumping 200k dust on a level 1 Vap just to make it gym usable.

Stardust gets replenished over time so eventually, you have more than enough to power up anything you want if you need another strong attacker (900k dust again).

Still waiting for a decent IV Karp (sad they took them out of eggs) and Snorlax.

Dragonite is more or less no better or worse a defender than anything not named Blissey and Snorlax. Where do you people come up with these lies?

OP, there is no auto return. Your mon will have to get kicked out by an attacker. Until then enjoy your earnings.

Depending on how niantic reworks the gym system, they may have to reboot the gyms if it is a radical change. This is pure speculation for something that may be 6 months away though. Your other option is to recruit another tesm player to nock the gym down. But as was stated before, why would you?

I put high IV attackers on gyms often when I don't have a good defender that fits. Your ultimate goal is to hold the gym for as long as possible to get dust and make other mons bigger; and you are already doing that. I have had a vaporeon stuck in a gym since Christmas that I would love to power up but he is doing a great job collecting dust for me to spend on other mons.

Hahaha. I know the feeling. At one time, my best attacker was L/HB Snorlax. He was stuck in a gym for 4 months. I learned that lesson and haven't put him in a gym since he got booted (even though I have some better attackers now).

LMAO!!

I know your pain. I had a 98% DB/DC Dragonite stuck at the top of a level 10 gym for months! When both DB and DC became legacy moves I was even more pissed because I couldn't use it at all.

I was so happy when someone cleared the gym and it returned to me. I had grown a few levels since it was in the gym and was happy to power it up and add it to my attacking team.

To respond: it's a 14 attack stat Dragonite w/ Dragon Tail/Outrage. It's been almost two months now- and she's still stuck at that gym. I was on vacation when I put her there, and won't return anytime soon. She was maxed out when I put her there, and thinking I would get her back before I leveled up I put her there. Was only a lvl 7 gym when assigned, must be 10 now idk…

To conclude: after exactly two months… my Dragonite has returned home. Though I appreciated the stardust/coins I'm glad to have my best attacker back. Gyms do not reset though, thanks for the feedback.
