Power up Groudon or Kyogre?

What is the more useful pokémon to power up for, say, the next two months?

Both are the best of their type and they both have the best stab moves currently available.
But Groudon's moves are lower DPS while water moves are very strong.

Kyogre can be replaced by Gyarados, at least to an extent, having the same moves, strong stats and candy being readily available.

Groudon is superior to other ground types because of Mud Shot, but has lower damage output than Kyogre in comparable single SE matchups. G. also needs Solar Beam to compare in these matchups at all.

Groudon beats other ground types with a massive difference while Kyogre beats other water types by a good margin.

They will both be useful in Regirock Raids, but Groudon will also be useful against Regice.

(Btw there is an error on the Regice page, Ice is weak to Fire).

Overall, Kyogre seems to be the stronger pokémon, but it does not beat other water types like Groudon beats other ground types.

Given the fact that Groudon is the strongest of its type without competition, I would prefer Groudon over Kyogre, which has competitors of somewhat lower strength, but cheap to obtain.

Do you agree and did I miss something?

Actually I would advise Groudon because Water does not have much value for future (Ice however is good because over half of the future legendaries are dragons), but Groudon's earthquake may still be useful for taking out stuff like Dialga, Heatran, Reshiram...if you even still play by that time.

Also kyogre may not be the best against regirock because it can learn zap cannon, which will kill your gyarados along with it.

True.

In my opinion, if you only consider lv5 raids, Groudon and Kyogre are actually on the same level, though I still believe Kyogre is better with higher dps and double STB movesets.
However, if you consider gym battle, Kyogre is much better as water type is only weak against grass and thunder, both type do not have very bulky mon. Also, in the long term, with Gachomp and Rhyperior, you can easily replace Groudon without losing a lot of stats.
So, if you must choose one between them, my answer would be Kyogre, but why not both? Since they are all master in their own type,I think the most reasonable choice is to power up them
both——and Kyogre first.

Gachomp and Rhyperior do not learn a double ground moveset, do they?

Rhyperior sadly doesn't learn any new ground fast moves in 3ds and you can only hope that rototiller or earth power becomes a fast move and it is good. Plus it has more potential rock type moves than ground types so it seems to be better as a Rock Attacker. I would hope it gets Drill run or Rock Wrecker so it becomes more like a rock attacker than a ground attacker.

In the other hand Garchomp's only eligible ground fast move seems to be Mud Shot, but i would rather it being a Dragon Attacker than a Ground Attacker because the only other Ground Charge move it learns is earthquake. As a ground attacker he seems to be be on same level as Groudon. As a Dragon Attacker he seems obviously and utterly amazing.

Groudon wis M/So works well against Kyogre with Thunder, but you gotta dodge the Waterfalls.

If you have a good enough IV Kyogre already, you can TM it to Thunder and power up to use against Kyogre raids with Blizzard or Hydro Pump.

You don't need to dodge the waterfalls. Without dodging, SoB Groudon is the highest TDO attacker into Thunder Kyogre at levels 30 and 35 and second highest at level 40.

For that matter, at higher levels Groudon is also the third best counter to Blizzard Kyogre without dodging. Being hit by SE doesn't matter if you're bulky enough to tank it, and Groudon is.

Right now? Groudon. It's a premium attacker for Thunder Kyogre raids and at higher levels also against Blizzard Kyogre and they will be around for a month still. Kyogre on the other hand doesn't have much use in the meta except for being a lower DPS tank counter to itself. Key words being "lower DPS".

Your analysis of their competition is incorrect. Kyogre literally blows every other current water type pokemon out of the water. A level 40 Gyarados is worse than a level 28 Kyogre. If you can catch 6 of them weatherboosted, you can obsolete a full team of maxed Garys without even spending that many resources on it.

Both have potentially strong competition coming in later generations that can't exactly beat them with stats but may do so with a combination of typing and movesets. I'd still say they're both some of the safest investments in the game right now, on a similar level to Mewtwo and safer than Tyranitar.
