The month of Alolan Exeggutor is coming to a close, and Niantic has announced May's Research Breakthough Pokemon: this time around its the Electric Type Pokemon Shinx with additional candy!

Breakthrough Start Breakthrough End
May 1, 2020, 1:00 p.m. EDT June 1, 2020, 1:00 p.m. EDT

If you're one of the many players who make a point of hunting down Shinx raids, then you already know very well that Shinx is available in its shiny forme, making this potentially exciting for many who are still on the shiny hunt. Luxray, Shinx' final evolution, is also a worthwhile Electric Type attacker, so those looking to shore up that side of their raid groups can look forward to this opportunity!

Beyond this, we also have the announcement of June's spotlight hours!

Tuesday, May 5, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Local Time

Shiny available: Yes

Bonus: 2x Stardust

Shellder will be first on the list. This Water Type Pokemon evolves into Cloyster, which has some limited use in some Silph cups in particular, making it worth hunting if Silph is your cup of tea.

Tuesday, May 12, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Local Time

Shiny available: Yes

Bonus: 2x EXP

The Grass Type Pokemon Sunflora sadly doesn't have much utility in literally any major format, leaving it nearly worthless as of now. But who knows? Maybe a move revamp will make it viable....? Probably not, but at least it's happy!

Tuesday, May 19, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Local Time

Shiny available: Yes

Bonus: 2x Candy

Much like Sunflora, Mightyena doesn't have any true viability, and you can tell by that scowl that it's not happy about that fact. Unless you really want a shiny, this one is probably worth skipping.

Tuesday, May 26, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Local Time

Shiny available: Yes

Bonus: 2x Transfer Candy

Bronzong is a Steel/Psychic Type, and it actually has a fairly decent presence in the Great League. If you still need a decent one, this will be your chance. And 2x transfer candy is fairly nice for building general resources as well!

Trainers,

Here’s an update on what you can look forward to this month.

Team GO Rocket Special Research update

It seems that Team GO Rocket has been quiet lately, so from May until the end of September, there’ll be no new Team GO Rocket Special Research available. Professor Willow and the team find this very odd and will continue to investigate to see if they can find any leads. We hope this means this is the last we’ll see of Team GO Rocket, but knowing the capabilities of these villains, we highly doubt that’s the case! Stay tuned for any updates. We really don’t expect Team GO Rocket to be quiet all summer...

May Research Breakthrough encounter: Shinx with bonus Shinx Candies!

From Friday, May 1, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, June 1, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7), the Flash Pokémon, Shinx, will be available as a Research Breakthrough encounter, and it’ll come with bonus Shinx Candies!

Upcoming Pokémon Spotlight Hours

In the next few weeks, Pokémon Spotlight Hour will take place every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. local time and will continue to spotlight both a Pokémon and a special bonus! For each Pokémon Spotlight Hour, you can expect a different Pokémon and bonus.

  • Tuesday, May 5, 2020: Shellder will be in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the Stardust for catching Pokémon.
  • Tuesday, May 12, 2020: Sunkern will be in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the XP for catching Pokémon.
  • Tuesday, May 19, 2020: Poochyena will be in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the Candy for catching Pokémon.
  • Tuesday, May 26, 2020: Bronzor will be in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the Candy for transferring Pokémon.
