Introduction

With  9 months since the release of Gen 4, Pokemon GO players are wondering when Gen 5 will finally be added to the game. When Gen 5 finally does hit, it’s going to hit hard, with 156 new Pokemon (the most Pokemon ever added to the franchise in one game). Of these include fan favorites such as Reshiram, Zekrom, Zoroark, and Garbodor. As usual, some Pokemon translate perfectly into GO while others fall flat. Rather than tasking yourself with learning 156 new names, the article below highlights the only 10 that will likely matter.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Low Kick, Quick Attack, Rock Smash, Charge Beam, Confusion, Shadow Claw, Zen Headbutt
Charge Move Brick Break, Close Combat, Hyper Beam, Last Resort, Low Sweep, Power-up Punch, Focus Blast, Dazzling Gleam, Energy Ball, Fire Punch, Grass Knot, Ice Punch, Psybeam, Psychic, Psyshock, Rest, Shadow Ball, Signal Beam, Stone Edge, Thunder, Thunder Punch, Thunderbolt
Meloetta’s Pirouette and Aria Formes standout by having the highest, non-nerfed CP out of all Pokemon in GO. With this power, both Formes are anticipated to become the most powerful Normal-type attackers in the game. While Normal-type damage isn’t the most useful in the Raid scene, Meloetta is in the best position to give Normal-types a fighting chance. Oddly enough, Gen 5 introduces four other Normal-type Pokemon that overcome the current champion Ambipom. Should both Meloetta fail to get dual Normal-type movesets, Braviary, Unfezant, Cinccino, and Sawsbuck have the opportunity to pick up the slack. While this victory will only be achieved with Last Resort and Hyper Beam, the inclusion of Giga Impact and Return could tip the scales in Normal-type’s favor.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Dragon Breath, Dragon Tail, Fire Fang, Cut, Extrasensory, Rock Smash, Shadow Claw, Steel Wing, Zen Headbutt
Charge Move Draco Meteor, Dragon Claw, Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, Flame Charge, Flamethrower, Heat Wave, Outrage, Overheat, Ancient Power, Crunch, Earth Power, Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Psychic, Rest, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Shadow Ball, Solar Beam, Stone Edge
Blaziken is the Fire-type lord right now, but can it “scorch the world with fire”? Enter: Reshiram. With the combination of Fire Fang and Overheat, it will outpace Blaziken in damage, tankiness, and resistances. Should Pokemon GO implement Incinerate or Flare Blitz as a Wild Charge clone, their potential to outpace the favorite flaming chicken only increases. Reshiram also has the signature moves Blue Flare and Fusion Flare to hope for as well. What keeps this Legendary at the bottom of this list is the fact that Fire-type damage is still relatively trivial in the raid scene. We’d also like to give a special shoutout to Chandelure and Volcarona. Chandelure is an upgrade to Alolan Marowak, allowing it to put that unique typing to work in the raid scene. Volcarona also offers relevant resistances and is featured later in this Top 10 list as the best Bug. Overall, Fire-types appear to be heating up in Gen 5, provided they get Overheat.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Counter, Low Kick, Rock Smash, Poison Jab, Pound, Rock Throw, Smack Down
Charge Move Brick Break, Dynamic Punch, Focus Blast, Low Sweep, Power-up Punch, Bulldoze, Dig, Earthquake, Fire Punch, Grass Knot, Hyper Beam, Ice Punch, Rest, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Stone Edge, Thunder Punch
Next up we have Conkeldurr. Despite its namesake, Conkeldurr is no slouch when it comes to dishing out Fighting-type damage, surpassing Machamp in both bulk and power. This is assuming that it gets the bread and butter Counter + Dynamic Punch moveset. Anything else will keep it behind Machamp. If you’re curious about the Legendary Musketeer Trio/Quad or Mienshao, none of these Pokemon possess the right moves to compete. Should the Musketeer Legendaries get their signature move Sacred Sword added to the game (and if it’s good), they could bump up in viability.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Charge Beam, Dragon Breath, Dragon Tail, Volt Switch, Cut, Rock Smash, Shadow Claw, Steel Wing, Zen Headbutt
Charge Move Draco Meteor, Dragon Claw, Dragon Pulse, Outrage, Thunder, Thunder Punch, Thunderbolt, Wild Charge, Ancient Power, Crunch, Earth Power, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Psychic, Rest, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Shadow Ball, Signal Beam, Stone Edge
Now we come to our next Gen 5 mascot, Zekrom. In the main series, Zekrom is a masterful Electric-type Pokemon. Unfortunately, the best Electric-type Fast Move it gets in Pokemon GO is Charge Beam. Even with this limitation, Zekrom overtakes Electivire and Raikou as an Electric-type damage dealer and packs Dragon-type resistances to boot! Should Zekrom obtain its signature moves Fusion Bolt or Bolt Strike, it will only stand to be more powerful. If you’re curious about Reshiram and Zekrom as Dragon-type Pokemon, given their history of always getting Outrage in the TCG it stands to reason they’d receive it in Pokemon GO. Ok, that might be a bit too hopeful. Either way, even with the classic Dragon Tail + Outrage combo, both will still fail to beat Rayquaza in Dragon-type damage.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Bug Bite, Ember, Fire Spin, Struggle Bug, Poison Jab, Take Down, Zen Headbutt
Charge Move Bug Buzz, Fire Blast, Flame Charge, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Heat Wave, Overheat, Signal Beam, Silver Wind, Aerial Ace, Giga Drain, Hurricane, Hyper Beam, Psychic, Rest, Solar Beam, Wild Charge
Remember this one from before? Volcarona is back and has the potential to stand far above current Bug-type Pokemon in Pokemon GO. With any combination of Bug Bite, Struggle Bug, Bug Buzz, or Signal Beam, Volcarona surpasses all including the Gen 5 Mythic Genesect. With this damage, Volcarona stands on the level of Shadow Ball Mewtwo against Psychic-type raid bosses, on the level of Sky Attack Moltres against Grass-types, and its resistances could make it a solid alternative to Machamp against Dark-types. Should it receive its signature moves Quiver Dance or Fiery Dance it can only gain in strength.

Against Psychic-types:

Projected Moves

Fast Move Rock Smash, Rock Throw, Smack Down, Wing Attack, Bite, Cut, Dragon Breath, Dragon Tail, Iron Tail, Quick Attack, Shadow Claw, Steel Wing, Zen Headbutt
Charge Move Aerial Ace, Ancient Power, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Sky Attack, Stone Edge, Aqua Tail, Bulldoze, Crunch, Dig, Dragon Claw, Dragon Pulse, Earth Power, Earthquake, Focus Blast, Heat Wave, Hyper Beam, Outrage, Rest
Remember last year when we said Rampardos would be so good with Rock Slide that we didn’t think Pokemon GO would do it? Meet Flying Rampardos, Archeops. Should Archeops receive Sky Attack it will redefine what we currently know as Flying-type DPS. Archeops’ parallel to Rampardos doesn’t stop there either. With Rock Slide Archeops could make a slightly weaker, slightly more bulky, Rock-type attacker. If Pokemon GO implements Rampardos’ signature move Head Smash, Archeops also has it in its learnset in the main series. Fingers crossed this prehistoric bird wins the moveset lottery!

Projected Moves

Fast Move Metal Claw, Mud Slap, Cut, Poison Jab, Rock Smash, Scratch, Shadow Claw
Charge Move Bulldoze, Dig, Drill Run, Earth Power, Earthquake, Iron Head, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Aerial Ace, Brick Break, Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Rest, Sludge Bomb, Submission, X-scissor
Drill Run being the best Ground-type Charge Move and conveniently absent on Pokemon with literal drills on their face has always been a thematic injustice in Pokemon GO. Given Niantic’s propensity to goof up Drill Run, it’s more likely that Excadrill will receive the new Ground-type Charge Move, Earth Power, completely trivializing it getting Drill Run. Either way, Excadrill is in good standing to surpass Groudon as a Ground-type attacker.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Mud Shot, Extrasensory, Iron Tail, Rock Smash, Rock Throw, Smack Down
Charge Move Bulldoze, Dig, Earth Power, Earthquake, Brick Break, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, Hyper Beam, Outrage, Psychic, Rest, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Stone Edge
This victory may be short-lived, however, as both formes of Landorus stand to surpass it, provided they get Earth Power. Given that Landorus Therian Forme will vastly surpass all Ground-type Pokemon with Earth Power, it pulls ahead of Excadrill on this list. Should we get Zekrom raids before seeing Landorus however, Excadrill will be a hot Pokemon to hunt for.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Charge Beam, Thunder Shock, Volt Switch, Astonish, Bite, Iron Tail, Rock Smash, Smack Down
Charge Move Discharge, Thunder, Thunder Punch, Thunderbolt, Wild Charge, Brick Break, Crunch, Dark Pulse, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Foul Play, Grass Knot, Hyper Beam, Psychic, Rest, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave
You thought Zekrom would be the top the Electric-type, but it was really Thundurus. Even with the weak Charge Beam and Thunderbolt moveset, Thundurus Therian Forme rules over all Electric-type Pokemon in damage per second. Should it gain Thunder Shock and/or Wild Charge, it will be that more powerful. With such overwhelming power, Zekrom’s hope for relevancy lies in Thundurus Therian Forme being released near the end of the generation or it gaining access to its signature move.

Projected Moves

Fast Move Dragon Breath, Dragon Tail, Cut, Rock Smash, Shadow Claw, Steel Wing, Zen Headbutt
Charge Move Blizzard, Draco Meteor, Dragon Claw, Dragon Pulse, Ice Beam, Icy Wind, Outrage, Ancient Power, Earth Power, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Iron Head, Psychic, Rest, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Shadow Ball, Signal Beam, Stone Edge
Kyurem Black and Kyurem White may become the new definition of power in Pokemon GO. Even with weaker Dragon-type attacks such as Dragon Breath, Draco Meteor, and Dragon Claw, they have the opportunity to outpace Rayquaza in performance. Despite not having an Ice-type Fast Move, they may also beat out Mamoswine as a Dragon/Flying counter with Dragon Tail and Ice Beam. Needless to say, these two Pokemon will be great additions to your team. Even if Niantic gives them a subpar movepool, it is likely that Kyurem will use it to its advantage. Given that Kyurem Black and White have identical stats and moves, the tables below only feature Kyurem Black.

Conclusion

We don’t know when Gen 5 is coming, but we do know it’s going to be big. With PvP and the Team Rocket Take Over event, the game has been building up anticipation. However, with 156 new Pokemon to sort though and 10 new Legendaries to raid battle (not including their alternate Formes), Gen 5 will bring a lot of new challenges to the game. Now that we have a working idea of which of the new Pokemon will likely be good, who do you think will make the first wave?
