Ultra Unlock 3 Revealed, The Galar Region is Coming to Pokemon Go

Submit Feedback or Error

The Final Ultra Unlock, an event that Niantic has quietly hyped up for the past few weeks, is finally revealed! As has been tradition since the start of the game, a new year is bringing a new region in its wake, and this time we're about to enter the realm of none other than Alol-...I mean, Galar.

That's right; we're jumping straight into the latest generation of Pokemon Go. While this may be a temporary trek with limited new Pokemon, it's still potentially exciting!

  • A number of Pokemon originating in or somehow related to the Galar region will be available in the wild
  • A special selection of Pokemon will be hatching from 7k eggs
  • Galarian Meowth, Galarian Farfetch'd, Galarian Weezing, and Galarian Stunfisk will be have their Shiny formes available
  • A timed research line will be available that rewards encounters with Pokemon from Galar
  • Special field research will be available that rewards encounters with Pokemon from Galar
  • Galar-themed Avatar Items and Stickers will be available

Yes, this is definitely a big deal. However! don't get too excited yet! These are not the forms that we're hoping for. "Hero of Many Battles" is the base form of these two Pokemon. Their real power comes in the form of their "Crowned" formes. We will have more information on these Pokemon in an upcoming article!

What About Hoopa?

Because of the theming of Pokemon Go Fest 2021, many players were fully expecting to see Hoopa take center stage during the final Ultra Unlock, especially after it somewhat upstaged poor Meloetta during what was supposed to be its time in the spotlight. Well, as has been stated in previous announcements, Hoopa is behind this paradigm shift as far as the in-game story is concerned, and will likely be involved in future events and changes as well.

I've got to admit; this is a cute use of a Mythical Pokemon in a manner that seems very on-brand for its characterization and powers. This may not be the first time that Niantic has tried to make the game feel as though different events and changed in-game were related via some common thread, but it's the first time that it actually feels a bit more cohesive and natural. Kudos on this story thread.
