Overview

Virizion is arguably the weakest and easiest of its trio to short-man, due primarily to its double-weakness to Flying. While this isn't a commonly prioritized type in the current metagame, most players have access to an exceptional option by simply using a few TMs on any Rayquaza that they may have raised in order to get access to its Flying Type set, to say nothing of the strong Flying Types that the game has given us semi-recently. Just keep in mind that Stone Edge hits most of Virizion's counters hard, meaning you will likely only have a 1/3 chance of actually being able to accomplish a duo without a specifically built team and/or immaculate dodging.

Approach

  • Focus on Flying Types first and foremost regardless of weather
  • Mega Rayquaza is capable of soloing Virizion, so it's obviously the strongest counter here.

Battle Strategy

  • Dodging depends on the moveset:
    • Stone Edge is generally a huge threat that should be avoided by basically any of Virizion's major counters, but is hard to dodge.

    • Leaf Blade isn't terribly threatening to the vast majority of Virizion's counters and is used so frequently that it will likely take more time dodging than you'll save. Mainly dodge if you're low on HP and close to your next Charged Move.

    • Close Combat is easy to dodge and resisted by many of Virizion's main counters, though frail Pokemon should prioritize dodging it.

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Rayquaza Mega Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Nothing in the game comes even close to Mega Rayquaza's sheer power. This thing is capable of soloing Virizion, and it has a tremendous mix of DPS and TDO thanks in part to resisting the majority of Virizion's moves. If you want this raid over quickly, then be sure to pack Mega Rayquaza.

Good Mega Evolutions

Mega Pidgeot Mega Pidgeot
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Pidgeot is the Mega of choice for this raid not named Mega Rayquaza, sporting high damage output, a highly beneficial Mega boost, and ease of access. It doesn't fully resists Close Combat, but it's still worthwhile.

Mega Charizard Y Mega Charizard Y
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite lacking the DPS of Mega Pidgeot due to the lack of a Flying Type Charged Move, Mega Charizard is a decent backup that provides a similar Mega Boost that also encompasses any Fire Type counters that others may have. Not the best, but definitely a solid backup option.

Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While lower on the priority list than the above, Mega Blaziken is actually capable of decent damage output thanks to Brave Bird alone. It's not the best here, and you should not TM away Blast Burn just for this raid, but it's still a surprisingly decent option.

Mega Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not generally on a par with the above, primarily due to its lack of Flying Type moves, Mega Gardevoir is a decent backup Mega Evolution that can definitely put in some work. It laughs at Virizion's Fighting Type moves and doesn't really worry about anything else, so it's a pretty safe choice for the most part. Still, it's hard to justify it comparatively.

It's worth noting that its Psychic Type moveset is stronger than its Fairy Type moveset, though the latter is still fine if you don't want to use TMs.

Mega Alakazam Mega Alakazam
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

If you know as a fact that your entire raid group is leaning heavily into Psychic-Type counters, then Mega Alakazam may be a good pick for you. But even if Mega boosted, Psychic counters kind of pale compared to Flying, and Windy weather boosts Psychic and Flying at the same time, so it will never be truly optimal.

Supreme Counters

Rayquaza Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

With Dragon Ascent, Rayquaza soars above the competition. It absolutely hits like a truck, and its resistance set makes it surprisingly bulky outside of Stone Edge. Packing a team of Rayquaza alongside a Mega Rayquaza is probably the best way to outright annihilate this raid as quickly as possible.

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Yveltal is surprisingly bulky, and has great DPS to back it up. With Oblivion Wing, it's definitely one of the best counters in this raid, though it can't quite keep up with Rayquaza.

ShadowMoltres Shadow Moltres
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Moltres is genuinely great this raid, sporting nearly-unparalleled DPS outside of Rayquaza and great DPS as well. This majestic bird should be a definite priority for this raid, but beware! While it laughs in the face of Leaf Blade and shrugs off Close Combat like a champ, Stone Edge can outright delete this poor bird, so pay attention to the recommended counters if you're running Shadow Moltres and look for clues that Virizion may be running Stone Edge!

Shadow-Honchkrow Shadow Honchkrow
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Honchkrow sports a DPS similar to Shadow Moltres, but it lacks a bit in the TDO area. It's an excellent counter, but it too must beware of Stone Edge!

Shadow-Ho-oh Shadow Ho-Oh
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

When running Hidden Power Flying, Shadow Ho-oh is basically Shadow moltres with a trade-off from DPS to TDO. With other Super Effective Hidden Powers or Incinerate, it's more a "good" counter than a "supreme" counter.

Shadow-Lugia Shadow Lugia
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Lugia has duo-worthy DPS and stupid-high TDO. If you just want to achieve a duo, then this is probably the best candidate for the job, as it basically turns on easy-mode for this raid. Note that it's not as good if not packing Aeroblast+, but still duo-worthy so don't obsess over your low-IV Apex!

Shadow-Staraptor Shadow Staraptor
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While less powerful than the above counters, Shadow Staraptor's solid performance keeps it worthy of a Supreme spot on this list. If you have a good one, it's definitely worth raising.

Good Counters

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Same story as Shadow Moltres, and still well within duo-DPS.

ShadowZapdos Shadow Zapdos
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A solid attacker that can drop strong Charged Attacks despite the fact that Virizion resists its Fast Moves.

Shadow Mewtwo Shadow Mewtwo
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite not having any Flying attacks, Shadow Mewtwo's huge Attack stat and Shadow boost make it competitive with a lot of the other counters.

Staraptor Staraptor
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

One of the top budget counters, Staraptor is a great option for filling in team holes.
