PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Fury Cutter benefits from STAB and pairs with X-Scissor to fulfill a Bug-type attacker role.
  • Waterfall is a strong Water-type move, and synergizes with Razor Shell to fulfill a Water attacker role
  • Liquidation and especially Aqua Jet fall behind.
  • Shadow Claw is a good move for Ghost-type Pokemon, not Golisopod.
  • Metal Claw should be TM'd away.
  • Aerial Ace doesn't have any significant use.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Waterfall is the best Fast Move for defense due to its high base power and damage against Rock-type attackers.
  • Metal Claw has half the base power and lacks STAB, making it a major downgrade.
  • Shadow Claw doesn't do much better, but is less likely to be resisted by attackers.
  • Fury Cutter is very poor for defense.
  • Liquidation is useful on defense against Rock-type attackers.
  • Razor Shell is weaker, but harder to dodge.
  • Aqua Jet is basically a worse Razor Shell.
  • X-Scissor is ok with STAB, and relatively difficult to dodge.
  • Aerial Ace has a niche against players who don't like switching out their Fighting-type attackers.

PVE Overview

Golisopod is an interesting Pokemon in Pokemon Go, with a decent ATK stat that sets it not too far behind Scizor in terms of offensive performance. Unfortunately Bug typing is not very valuable, making this Pokemon mostly a Dex entry at this point. Probably the most notable aspect about Golisopod in Pokemon Go is its incredible Candy requirement to evolve from Wimpod.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Shadow Claw + X-Scissor or Aerial Ace and Liquidation

Shadow Claw is the preferred Fast Attack due to its excellent parameters and additional coverage. Fury Cutter is decent and receives STAB, but it doesn't provide extra coverage. Waterfall is another option if more Water-type damage is preferred, offering stronger STAB damage while sacrificing energy gains. Metal Claw has poor stats and its coverage is not very valuable.

X-Scissor can be spammed frequently with its low energy cost, and benefits from STAB to deal respectable damage. Liquidation is a potent Water-type STAB attack and is Golisopod's primary weapon. Though Aerial Ace has mediocre DPE and does not benefit from STAB, it can be used to cover certain Pokemon that Golisopod's STABs don't particularly do well against, such as Virizion and Poliwrath. Razor Shell is Golisopod's Cheapest Charged Attack, but its low DPE makes it not worth using.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 3.5 / 5

Golisopod shares the same Bug/Water typing with Araquanid. It is rather fragile, but does at least have access to a relatively unique moveset with superior coverage. Having resistances to Fighting, Ice, and Ground is quite valuable, allowing Golisopod to take on Medicham, Dewgong, Walrein, and Alolan Sandslash. However, Golisopod does struggle greatly against the omnipresent Noctowl and Lanturn,

Ultra League: 4 / 5

Golisopod is less fragile here and no longer competes with Araquanid. Access to Shadow Claw is extremely useful in a metagame where Giratina is omnipresent, allowing Golisopod to not be completely helpless against it. Being able to pressure both Cresselia and Charizard is a wonderful niche. Beware of Pidgeot and Registeel.

Master League: 2 / 5

Golisopod can be a viable pick in the Master League Premier cup - it resists Steel and Ground and thus can wall Metagross's Charged Attacks. It does, however, struggle with Gyarados's omnipresence. Don't use Golisopod in Open Master League; it gets severely outstatted.
