Pokemon Analysis

Overview

Brawly & Hariyama are a somewhat underrated Sync Pair, with its decent niche and utility a nice tool in the player's arsenal but not necessarily making it an absolute must on every team. As a Fighting Type expert, it loses out on sheer damage output to Machamp and Lucario, but its defensive capabilities arguably make up for it.

Strengths

That Extra Step

Most team compositions consider it fortunate to get to +6 Attack and +3 Critical Hit rate. This is where Hariyama's Rock Smash comes in. A nice 50% chance to lower the target's Defense by 1 can be a worthwhile investment if the player has the Move Gauge for it. For teams (both SP and Co-Op) that are finding it hard to take down bulky foes, that one Defense drop (or a few, depending on RNG), can really swing odds in one's favor.

Potion

Brawly is one of the few Sync Pairs to carry a Potion on them, meaning that it is quite useful to help restore health in long drawn out battles. Teammates like Lance and Hilda, both with recoil centric sets, appreciates Brawly helping to heal their Pokemon and allowing them to keep up the offensive pressure. This can extend to bulky Support Sync Pairs like Sygna Suit Elesa, to make her last a lot longer on the field.

Last Resort Strike

The combination of A Rain of Fists!, Power Reserves 2, relatively decent bulk, as well as offenses that are arguably comparable to that of Kris' Feraligatr allows Hariyama to actually hit for decent damage despite being classified as a Tech Sync Pair. Evolution into Hariyama gave it a much more abusable Sync Move, which synergizes extremely well with Rock Smash to deal hefty damage.

Filter Demolition

Hariyama's signature Brick Break helps clear the opposing field's damage reduction effects.

Weaknesses

Kukui

Rock Smash costs more in terms of Move Gauge, for the chance to lower Defense on 1 target. Leer is a lot cheaper and has guaranteed returns on all opponents. Likewise, the effects of Hariyama's Brick Break is covered by Lycanroc's Sync Move, Island Splintered Stormshards. In terms of cost-effectiveness, Professor Kukui beats Brawly in almost every aspect.

Situational Energy Sink

Aside from Potion, Hariyama's team support moves have a rather hefty Move Gauge penalty. In battles where the target is immune to Defense drops, or where the opponent does not use damage reduction field effects, Hariyama is pretty much useless.

Team Synergy

Brawly & Hariyama fit best on Physical strike teams, particularly those revolving around units that can strike hard with low Move Gauge costs. Examples would include Noland & Mega Pinsir, as well as Steven Stone & Mega Metagross. Both options are known for being able to extremely energy efficient, the latter through its Quick Move after Mega Evolution. Hariyama's Potion can help them survive even longer on the field too.
