ROCKMAN X DiVE is the Isekai Megaman Mobile Game You Never Asked For

On September 12th, 2019, Capcom Taiwan opened the ROCKMAN X DiVE closed beta test servers to players who previously registered.

Gameplay has been revealed to function extremely similar to the classic Megaman X series with many of the mobile mechanics familiar to gacha game players added in.

After starting the game the player is transported into the world of ROCKMAN X DiVE to reassemble Irregular Data for the Deep Log, a timeline structure that contains the memories of players beating Megaman X up to X3. The player is told they have a hefty personal relationship with the game series and they are started out in the starting area of Megaman X.

The game has a fluid control system with a virtual joystick for movement and a weapon attack button arranged under the dash and jump button, which can be slid over with your right thumb to do a dash jump. You have a double jump by default. The platforming jumps are never challenging but dash jumping does feel good.

Shooting can be manually aimed by holding the weapon button down and dragging your thumb but auto-aim is on by default. This mostly trivializes stages and causes success to largely depend on the strength of your weapon, which is determined by the gacha.

The gacha mechanics in ROCKMAN X DiVE are for both characters and weapons, with not much variety between either type available in this closed beta(8 characters, 12 weapons). Players are granted 20 premium currency per completed stage with each capsule, or summon, costing 100. 1000 gets the player a 10-pull with a guaranteed A-rank weapon or character on the 10th pull.

The 8 characters included in the demo range from Zero to Marino from Megaman X: Command Mission to Ultimate Armor X to Pallette from Megaman X8. They each have two unique skills that vary in usefulness(in a game with auto lock-on, skills like Zero's sword uppercut feel very underpowered).

Weapons also vary in strength and are significantly different item to item. Getting a new weapon in a gacha doesn't feel bad in this game like in some other games that grant equipment on a premium roll. Weapons are not locked to characters and can be upgraded.

Overall, first impressions of the first Megaman X game are positive. The game is pretty rough around the edges, through my time with the game I experienced several bugs and noticed many typos, some entertaining. The closed beta test only extended to the first three Zones which represent three sections of various Megaman X games which is nice at first, but there are 6 stages per Zone and they all look exactly the same. ROCKMAN X DiVE has an entertaining core gameplay loop that feels nice with very little challenge and even though there are some setbacks, I'm interested in exploring more about this new MMX offering.
