  • New AR/Geolocation Stranger Things set to release 2020
  • In partnership with Netflix, It could have a major impact on the AR/Geolocation space
  • Game classified as "location-based puzzle RPG"

There's a new AR game coming to Android and iOS near you, and it's based on the universe of the hit Netflix series: Stranger Things.

In a recent press release from Next Games, the new Augmented Reality, Geolocation-style game is coming sometime in 2020. Described as a "location-based puzzle RPG game," (we're not sure what that looks like) -- it may end up breaking some familiar molds in the AR/Geolocation space.

For one, the graphics focus is set to be in the same 80's style we know and love from the franchise. And second, the game is supposed to take place in the Upside Down World, which from the Stranger Things universe exists all around each one of us as some sort of strange parallel dimension. Users will team up to fight back emerging evils as they travel to and from their day jobs in this interesting re-imagining.
From the CEO of Next Games (Teemu Huuhtanen):

"We are huge fans of Stranger Things and thrilled to work together with Netflix to bring our shared vision of Stranger Things into life in a mobile game format. Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things' rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure, and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device."

What's truly interesting about the unique relationship, however, is the access to end-users. Often the owners of the intellectual property for a given franchise are not directly connected to the general public. In cases like Jurassic World Alive or Ghostbusters, companies like Universal or Warner Brothers or Columbia Pictures own the IP. But Netflix is directly attached to its users via subscription bases, and could really put a dent in advertising in a way that one of the big movie studios might not be able to readily implement.

Overall, we're interested to see where this all leads.
