Details

Have you ever felt compelled to drive straight off the edge of Rainbow Road and fall onto other parts of the course? What may be cheating in another racing game is the central mechanic in Super Impossible Road. Players take the form of a sphere racing through a neon-lit track suspended in space.

Originally on the PS4,  Super Impossible Road is just one of many other titles that can be accessed through the Apple Arcade subscription. Although shallow and short, it introduces yet another control scheme and genre to the value of Apple Arcade's extensive library.

For what it's worth, the game has procedurally generated levels for endless variety, and several different game modes:

Level up your skills in Career Mode, in which you are challenged by a series of races and trials. When you’re finished, you will have the strategy and experience to take on the best pilots.

Time Gate Mode challenges you to reach gates and earn time extensions. This means taking huge risks as the timer runs down to zero.

Survival Mode is a test of your endurance and sheer piloting skill. See how far you can get down the infinite track, knowing that a single fall means Game Over.

But Can You Speedrun It?

Hurtling through space past a winding course is oddly reminiscent of Super Monkey Ball speedruns.

Unfortunately for the ambitious out there, endless free-fall speedrunning is explicitly forbidden in Super Impossible Road. All jumps have a five-second time limit-- if a player fails to touch down on the track within that timeframe, they will respawn at the most recent checkpoint. Still, clipping the track does count as a touchdown, so carefully-controlled jumps are the key to attaining the quickest runs.

With smooth and intuitive controls, it's the kind of game that's easy to learn but hard to master. For an earnest real-time look at the game, see the gameplay footage below!
