Overview

Mega Gyarados may be a bit under-powered when compared to its competition, but it's still going to make you feel pain when trying to farm down its Mega Energy! Mega Gyarados has the highest defense stat among all of the Water Type Mega Evolutions, and also has the second highest defense of all Dark Type Mega Evolutions and no double-weakness to exploit. This fact, when combined with a high attack stat and a few attacks that are just downright mean to face on a raid boss, can make Mega Gyarados a fairly challenging prospect.

Approach

Team composition

  • Mega Gyarados is weak to Fighting, Bug, Grass, Electric, and Fairy.
    • Grass is generally the strongest option, though the top counters that make it beat out the competition are pretty much limited to Mega Sceptile and Kartana.
    • Fighting Types have a few strong options, though they can be a bit frail depending on the counter/Mega Gyarados' moveset.
    • Electric is an all-around good type, but is a bit middle-of-the-road in actuality.
    • Fairy has a very limited number of good counters, but one strong Mega Evolution option in Mega Gardevoir.
    • Bug is generally the weakest option here, though it does at least boast Mega Heracross.

Battling strategy

  • Dodging can definitely be helpful against Outrage. It's also very much a good idea to dodge Hydro Pump, but it's pretty hard to pull off. Twister and Crunch come out too frequently to reliably dodge, though Crunch can be very threatening.

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Sceptile Mega Sceptile
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Sceptile has crazy-high DPS that crushes all of the competition. It also double-resists Water Type moves, meaning it can last a surprisingly long time, though it's also weak to Mega Gyarados' Dragon Type moves, meaning it situationally falls off.

  • Strengths: Waterfall (2x), Hydro Pump (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Dragon Breath, Outrage,Twister
Mega Heracross Mega Heracross
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The Buff Bug had good performance here. It's a great TDO option with solid DPS to back it up, and a strength to the ever-threatening Crunch, but that's not all; Mega Heracross also boosts Fighting and Bug Type counters alike. And while Bug isn't exactly a high-priority to boost, it's still a nice bonus.

  • Strengths: Bite, Crunch
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Gardevoir has strong performance that's actually very close to Mega Heracross. Its biggest competency here has to be its double-strength to Mega Gyarados' Dragon Type movesets, which can be very threatening to many teams.

  • Strengths: Dragon Breath (2x), Outrage (2x), Twister (2x)
  • Weaknesses: None

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Manectric Mega Manectric
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The premier Electric Type Mega Evolution, Mega Manectric can't quite compare with the top counters listed above. Still, it's strong in its own right, and is great for boosting Electric Types that other raiders may bring to the fight, and can be an optimal pick in the Rain.

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Blaziken is a bit of a coin-flip. It's one of the best options for Fighting damage and boosts, rivaled only by Mega Heracross, but it's got an issue. This monster has amazing performance against Mega Gyarados' ever-threatening Dark Type moves thanks to its resistance, but it's going to fall pretty quick if Mega Gyarados lands on Water Type moves.

  • Strengths: Bite, Crunch
  • Weaknesses: Waterfall, Hydro Pump
Mega Ampharos Mega Ampharos
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Ampharos is comparable to Mega Manectric, but with an additional strength and weakness. On the strength side, it resists Mega Gyarados' Water Type moves, giving it longevity against the annoying Hydro Pump, as well as everyone's favorite sea-dragon-that's-not-a-dragon's strongest Fast Move. However, it's also weak to Dragon Type moves, meaning it's going to take heavy damage from Outrage in particular.

  • Strengths: Waterfall, Hydro Pump
  • Weaknesses: Dragon Breath, Outrage, Twister
Mega Venu Mega Venusaur
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The old-reliable of Grass Type Mega Evolutions, Mega Venusaur will plod along and support its team with a prolonged Grass Type bonus. However, it really falls behind Mega Sceptile when Mega Gyarados is packing Water Type moves.

  • Strengths: Waterfall, Hydro Pump
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Lopunny Mega Lopunny
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Yoga bunny can throw out hard-hitting kicks, and is capable of producing a Spirit Bomb for some reason. I mean, we didn't question it when a self-frying chicken could do it, but for some reason a bunny with ripped tights is just more egregious....

  • Strengths: Bite, Crunch
  • Weaknesses: None

Xurkitree Xurkitree
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The real reason that Xurkitree is a top counter here is the fact that Mega Gyarados has to untangle all of those Christmas lights... and it doesn't have any hands!

Terrakion is a rock-cow, so it really makes sense that it can't swim....

A classical Electric Type, Shadow Raikou has great performance.
