PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Dragon Tail and Spacial Rend* is, by far, the strongest moveset option for Origin Forme Palkia.
  • Dragon Breath or Draco Meteor can sub in, but both will result in lower performance.
  • Fire Blast, Hydro Pump, and Aqua Tail do Origin Forme Palkia no favors.

PVE Overview

Origin Forme Palkia is one of those Pokemon: the type of Pokemon that actually managed to live up to its hype. Palkia was always just short of being great, but its Origin forme gains additional Attack and access to Spacial Rend, putting it about on a par with the top Dragon Type shadows. This thing is a true monster, and very much worth adding to any Dragon Type team, as it has the sheer power to be worthy of consideration in conjunction with a Water sub-typing that is frequently valuable against coverage moves, in particular Fire and Water, both of which it double-resists

And Raid utility isn't the only reason to use Palkia - Origin Forme! Alongside Dialga - Origin Forme, this is the first individual Pokemon that's capable of directly effecting the way that Pokemon Go is played! Any Palkia - Origin Forme that has the move Spacial Rend is capable of using a unique Adventure Effect that increase the range at which the player is able to see and encounter wild Pokemon for 6 minutes at the cost of 5 Palkia Candy and 5,000 Stardust, extending them for up to 2 hours per individual use, and up to 24 consecutive hours total. This gives added value to Palkia - Origin Forme, and makes it a must-have for any trainer's team!

PvP Moveset Explanation

Dragon Breath or Dragon Tail + Aqua Tail and Spacial Rend*

Dragon Tail has slightly better stats on paper, but Dragon Breath is easier to use and benefits significantly more from certain breakpoints.

Aqua Tail costs significantly less than Palkia-O's other options and allows it to output STAB Water-type damage consistently and provide shield pressure. Spacial Rend is a strong attack at a moderate cost, serving as a more reliable Dragon-type choice than Draco Meteor. Draco Meteor is extremely strong, but it is more expensive than Spacial Rend and the drawback can be nasty. Fire Blast can be used to melt down Steel-type Pokemon that attempt to wall a farmed Palkia-O, but it is an incredibly unreliable move. Hydro Pump is an option to severely dent Fairy-type Pokemon, but Palkia-O often already does enough Water-type damage with Aqua Tail.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 0 / 5

Palkia-O's CP is too high to enter the Great League

Ultra League: 1 / 5

Palkia-O has virtually no use in the Ultra League due to its restricted CP and lack of solid niches.

Master League: 5 / 5

Palkia-O is a fearsome attacker and is one of the top threats in the Master League. It is a direct upgrade over its base forme, boasting strictly superior stats and a more reliable Dragon-type Charged Attack in Spacial Rend. Thanks to its great coverage and raw power, Palkia-O is difficult to stop; even behemoths such as Dialga, Dialga-O, and Zygarde struggle to cleanly defeat it. Palkia-O's Water typing also grants it some useful qualities. Defensively, it allows Palkia-O to take neutral damage from Ice-type attacks, protecting it from the likes of Hisuian Avalugg or a farmed Kyogre carrying Blizzard. Offensively, it keeps Ground-type Pokemon in check, and reliably dents Steel- and Fairy-type Pokemon.

There aren't many ways to remove Palkia-O. Fairy-type Pokemon such as Xerneas and Zacian are the best options. Non-Fairy options are those who can apply super effective pressure on Palkia-O without taking super effective damage themselves, such as Lugia and both formes of Dialga, but they can take massive damage in the process.

Palkia-O is an IV dependent Pokemon - it needs 15 Defense to achieve a bulkpoint against Dialga-O's Dragon Breath. If the Dialga-O is best buddied, Palkia-O must also be best buddied. As Dragon Breath is a one-turn move, taking one less damage every time it is used can significantly improve Palkia-O's lifespan in that matchup.
