The Modern Magus Magazine

Well, this one was easy to anticipate at the least.

I don’t think anybody was fooling themselves that Johanna wouldn’t be put in the game eventually considering her prominence as a character in Traum, and that combined with the reveals in streams means all there was to be surprised by is her actual kit.

And isn’t that what I’m for! The perfect distraction from yet another Valentines spent in loneliness, no? Perhaps some of the readers need one as much as I do?

Overview

The Ruler class, especially at SSR rarity, tends to have very big HP stats lending to their defensive stat spreads overall. Johanna is no different, with the 4th best HP stat in her class, and 11th best in the game overall. The sweet part is she doesn’t even lose much offensively for that bulk - she has the 4th worst Attack stat of any SSR Ruler, but after the Ruler class’s 1.1x Attack modifier is factored in, her Attack is only slightly below average for an SSR Servant.

Like I said, one of the best HP’s in the game for only slightly sub-par offense is a good hand to be dealt, especially when you’re benefitting from the defensive class advantage of a Ruler.

Similar to most Rulers, Johanna doesn’t have anything too impressive for passives - her EX-ranked Magic Resistance means she has a good chance of ignoring debuffs passively, while A-rank Territory Creation is a moderate boost to her primary card type - Arts.

Conclusion

So how is Johanna on the whole? Well, on one hand, she’s practically radiating saintliness:

As an Arts Support, Johanna frankly isn’t too bad. She might not provide the raw 50% card booster buffs we’re used to, but +20% Attack and +20% Arts Up isn’t the worst for offensive buffs, and her gauge charger skill is unrivaled for the sheer amount of NP gauge it can provide to a team in one skill. Add in her tools like Debuff Immunity and Negate Buff for difficult content, and she’s surprisingly versatile on top of making your Summer Hokusai absolutely obliterate things at the touch of an Arts card.

While Johanna functions perfectly fine as a universal farmer with Black Grail, she does have a very potent farming niche for nodes with unusual enemy lineups, such as 1 enemy on wave 1, 3 on wave 2, then 1 on wave 3, or vice versa. Usually farming such nodes requires battlesuit swaps of a strong AOE NP Servant when needed, but Johanna has the interesting ability to both act as support to a ST NP Servant when farming, and act as the AOE NP to clear the 3-enemy wave herself. This results in fewer button presses for the 3-turn loop, and also requires fewer SSR Servants in one’s own collection to manage a usually-high investment form of farming. Also, with Johanna’s powerful crit buff, it’s entirely possible to not even need a NP to clear one of the ST waves, and just blow an enemy away with one big Arts crit.

However, she’s also breaking water on the Popemobile…proverbially, of course:

We’re currently seeing an inflation of universal farmers on a whole other level of late, especially when looking at the recent additions from LB7. I wonder if there’s going to be a point where I don’t even bother pointing it out, since it seems to be becoming the standard for new Servants (if they’re AOE Arts, at least). Compared to most, Johanna is a little underwhelming, even with her supportive niches behind her.

In difficult content, Johanna may end up being hamstrung by her long skill cooldowns. While it’s not necessarily as bad as release Kiara or Abbie, who had absurdly long cooldowns for skills that weren’t even that good, not having regular access to your powerful skills can make her less desirable compared to options like ProtoMerlin or Castoria, who at least get their skills back frequently. And no, Tamamo isn’t a viable option to compensate.

You know, I never thought I’d sit here on the MMM’s podium and say that the newest Arts Support doesn’t even come close to competing with Castoria, but that’s fine. In fact, it’s probably better that she goes in a weird direction and ends up having a strange niche while being a capable farmer, instead of just ending up trying to be a lesser ProtoMerlin.

In the right situations, Johanna provides some truly potent offensive support, and even when that isn’t the best move, she remains a solid universal farmer option for any player, on top of having the occasional niche to farm abnormal nodes better than any other option out there.

Whether you’re still somehow in dire need of a solid farming Servant, or feel like filling out your Arts support pool a little more for the sake of farming and difficult content alike, Johanna isn’t too bad an option. And heck, even as an offensive Ruler she has her uses to nab Mooncancer class advantage with a pair of potent effective damage modifiers.

Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Outro

And that’s Valentines done for this year. To be frank, just in sheer gameplay terms I think Valentines is my least favorite event in the game - I just don’t like navigating the chocolate menus and clicking through all the chocolate-giving scenes, then managing my Craft Essence inventory. It typically needs more farming than most events, too.

That leaves White Day to look forward to. No clue how the actual event will pan out, but given what we know from the Valentines event already…maybe Arjuna will be a little less lonely soon?

Knowing my obsession with the Mahabharata, maybe I need to prepare my wallet. Until then!
