Rabbit’s Reviews #345: Huang Feihu (4* Rider)

Huang Feihu is decidedly unremarkable. Which, for a non-limited ST unit, isn’t necessarily a problem. He has solid steroids and some ramp, good crits, and a defensive tool. His Koyanskaya compatibility isn’t the best, but it’s not the worst either. If he has a major drawback, it’s that Rider Liz is nearly identical in performance and is free, so if your account is at least a year old, you need NP5 for Huang Feihu to be… a side-grade to a free unit. His crit tools make him probably better at equal NP levels, but not cleanly so. All-in-all, he’s not bad, but he’s deeply unexciting, and anyone with Rider Liz has no need for him.

Feihu has pretty middling stats. More attack would be better on a DPS, but it could be worse. His internals are similarly meh, with just-below-average Arts cards and a very bad Quick. He has decent hit counts, but with only one Quick, active star gen isn’t likely to be a strength. In exchange for his weak bases, though, Feihu gets a bunch of passives. Magic Resistance and Riding are standard and not too helpful, and Divinity is just for flavor, but the other two unique passives are more interesting: Reed Spear Technique is a permanent buff to Buster crit damage, and Familial Bond of Huang gives some additional debuff resistance and two critical stars each turn.

Feihu doesn’t really benefit much from any of his appends aside from potentially Mana Loading… but Buster’s favored supports have batteries in 20% and 50% increments, which means Mana Loading isn’t actually that helpful without self-batteries to leverage it. Anti-Foreigner damage is way too niche to matter (especially on an otherwise unremarkable unit), and Feihu’s cards aren’t good enough to leverage the Extra Attack buff.

Fortunately, Feihu avoids the recent bad-mats curse. Unless you’re really short on proofs, he doesn’t have any particularly bad mat asks and should be fairly easy to level, should you so choose.

Unlike most Servants with batteries, Feihu’s dependence on cards won’t change much even if you level his battery. As such, it’s worth prioritizing his damage skills. Recommended skill order is 3>1>2.

Feihu is a standard Buster crit Servant. Run him with double Koyan and an Oberon for best results (with the caveat that Feihu is reliant on cards to loop even with Koyan and Oberon helping). Not much to say here, though with his crit focus, you could also consider running him in Himiko/Castoria teams—he’ll slot right in to their slower, crit-oriented style of play.

Outside of meta setups, though, Feihu likes any support who give him damage buffs and enable crits. To go really oldschool, Mash/Merlin is a solid team for Feihu. Hans is a great partner as well, and Barti is also a decent pick.

The Black Grail is the best CE for Feihu for damage, so if you have that and are planning to burst, use that one. For anything slower—whether that’s a Himiko setup or a budget team—the HP loss from Black Grail’s demerit can cause problems, so you could consider something like Aerial Drive or Victor of the Moon instead.

Feihu has plenty of in-kit crit buffs, but a little extra damage can’t hurt, especially if you’re trying to leverage his crit buffs. Star gen CEs might also be a good idea, as they can make it easier for Feihu to crit reliably.

Especially since we’ve been getting more grails lately, the cost to take Feihu to 90 isn’t huge. That said, Feihu doesn’t bring a lot of value you can’t get other places, so unless you’re committed to using him regardless, he’s probably not worth even the lesser investment.

There’s nothing really wrong with Feihu. He has solid damage, and good crits. If you missed Rider Liz, he’s a good spookable Buster option who’s a little more accessible than Ozy. That said, he’s… very easily replaced. There’s nothing he does you can’t do with someone else—and, in many cases, that someone else is cheaper or more accessible. He’s not a bad spook, especially as time goes on and there are more players who missed Liz, but he’s far from exciting or innovative.
