PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Snarl and Dark Pulse make Yveltal a respectable Dark attacker when paired together. Sucker Punch is okay, but ultimately the weaker choice.
  • Gust and Oblivion Wing* make Yveltal a strong Flying attacker. Hurricane is a fairly large step down from Oblivion Wing, but is not a legacy move.
  • Focus Blast, Psychic, and Hyper Beam are sub-par choices.

PVE Overview

The Destruction Pokemon itself; Yveltal may not be the top Pokemon in either of its types, but its ability to operate well on either side of the spectrum gives it genuine value. However, it's also not quite as balanced as it may seem. As a Dark Type, it has the unfortunate disadvantage of directly competing with Brutal Swing Tyranitar, as well as powerful Ghost attackers.. On the Flying side, thanks to its signature move Oblivion Wing, it possesses better DPS. However, Flying tends to have less utility in raids, and Yveltal trails far behind Dragon Ascent Rayquaza. Another unfortunate aspect of Yveltal's Flying attacker prowess is that being part Dark-type removes its resistances to Bug and Fighting, two types that Flying attackers prey on.

Honestly, Yveltal's greatest worth is for newer players due to its role compression. It's not a bad Pokemon, but other Pokemon tend to do its job a bit better. Additionally, since Dragon Ascent Rayquaza is rather limited due to the general scarcity of Meteorites, Yveltal can still fill out the remainder of your Flying attacking needs,

PvP Moveset Explanation

Snarl + Dark Pulse and Focus Blast or Hurricane or Oblivion Wing*

Snarl is chosen over Yveltal's other fast move options due to its incredible energy generation, letting it leverage its expensive charged moves more effectively. Gust can be used instead in situations where you need better Flying fast move damage output, though its coverage is generally less valuable.

Dark Pulse is mandatory, due to it being Yveltal's strongest STAB option and cheapest move in general. Focus Blast is generally the second move of choice, giving Yveltal a powerful answer to Steel-types. However, if you're less worried about that than you are about, say, Fairy-types, Hurricane is a valid choice as well! Oblivion Wing unfortunately isn't strong enough to be considered an upgrade, but it is more reliable than Hurricane due to its lower cost.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: N/A

Yveltal's CP is too high for Great League. If it can be obtained in the future through Research Tasks or other methods, then it might have a shot in this league.

Ultra League: 3 / 5

Yveltal is a Dark/Flying type that has some similarities in performance to Alolan Muk, being neutral to Fighting-types while still fulfilling a Dark-type role. Yveltal's sluggish moveset and unimpressive bulk holds it back considerably in this meta, with various losses against neutral matchups depending on the movesets chosen for Yveltal. Yveltal has no chance against Fighting-types without Gust or Hurricane, but various matchups require Focus Blast to win. Even with a seemingly favorable typing advantage, Yveltal surprisingly struggles against Pokemon like Snorlax, Giratina (Dragon Breath), and even Cresselia depending on movesets chosen. Hope Yveltal gets Oblivion Wing with good stats in the future.

Master League: 4 / 5

Yveltal shares a similar playstyle with Darkrai, focusing on fast energy to pressure shields with its charge moves. However, it is far bulkier and is much more consistent at it than Darkrai. The addition of a Flying sub-typing benefits Yveltal, providing defense against Groudon, Zarude, and Focus Blast Mewtwo. Yveltal can be a nasty corebreaker, as the combination of Dark Pulse and Focus Blast can wreak havoc to many common Pokemon such as Dialga, Giratina, Mewtwo, Lugia, and Melmetal. It can also run Hurricane to land a heavy hit onto Zacian, potentially flipping the normally terrible matchup with an energy lead and successful shielding.

Yveltal's main problem stems from strong Zacian, Xerneas, and Togekiss are, and sacrificing Focus Blast for Hurricane to dent them gives up crucial coverage against Steel-type Pokemon. Additionally, its charge moves are average at best, dampening Snarl's energy generation. Yveltal may find itself having trouble overcoming enemies with strong neutral damage, such as Palkia, Kyogre, and Dragonite. Landing a Focus Blast on the Steel-type targets is also challenging when shields are up, and thus Yveltal requires teammates to pressure them before it is able to show its true destructive potential.
