PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Snarl and Dark Pulse have the strongest neutral same-type moveset performance when paired together. Sucker Punch is okay, but ultimately the weaker choice.
  • Gust and Hurricane make Yveltal a strong Flying Type attacker
  • Focus Blast, Psychic, and Hyper Beam are sub-par choices.

PVE Overview

The Destruction Pokemon itself; Yveltal may not be the top Pokemon in either of its types, but its ability to operate well on either side of the spectrum gives it genuine value. However, it's also not quite as balanced as it may seem. As a Dark Type, it has the unfortunate disadvantage of directly competing with super-powerful Ghosts in its niche, as well as monsters like Darkrai, which means it tends to come up lacking for the most part. On the Flying side, it tends to fair much better. While not quite up to par with high Attack Pokemon like Honchkrow, it is a fair bit harder to put down, giving it a bit of real utility in that regard. It also has the disadvantage of not resisting Fighting Type moves, which can make it a bit riskier in some raids.

Honestly, Yveltal's greatest worth is for newer players due to its role compression. It's not a bad Pokemon, but other Pokemon tend to do its job a bit better.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Snarl + Dark Pulse and Focus Blast or Hurricane

Snarl is chosen over Yveltal's other fast move options due to its incredible energy generation, letting it leverage its expensive charged moves more effectively. Gust can be used instead in situations where you need better Flying fast move damage output, though its coverage is generally less valuable.

Dark Pulse is mandatory, due to it being Yveltal's strongest STAB option and cheapest move in general. Focus Blast is generally the second move of choice, giving Yveltal a powerful answer to Steel-types. However, if you're less worried about that than you are about, say, Fighting-types, Hurricane is a valid choice as well!

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: N/A

Yveltal's CP is too high for Great League. If it can be obtained in the future through Research Tasks or other methods, then it might have a shot in this league.

Ultra League: 3 / 5

Yveltal is a Dark/Flying type that has some similarities in performance to Alolan Muk, being neutral to Fighting-types while still fulfilling a Dark-type role. Yveltal's sluggish moveset and unimpressive bulk holds it back considerably in this meta, with various losses against neutral matchups depending on the movesets chosen for Yveltal. Yveltal has no chance against Fighting-types without Gust or Hurricane, but various matchups require Focus Blast to win. Even with a seemingly favorable typing advantage, Yveltal surprisingly struggles against Pokemon like Snorlax, Giratina (Dragon Breath), and even Cresselia depending on movesets chosen. Hope Yveltal gets Oblivion Wing with good stats in the future.

Master League: 4 / 5

Yveltal shares a similar playstyle with Darkrai, focusing on fast energy to pressure shields with its charge moves. The addition of a Flying sub-typing is actually a benefit due to resistances against Ground-types like Groudon. Focus Blast is absolutely essential here due to the ubiquitous Dialga, and though Snarl is recommended in order to generate the energy needed, not having Gust or Hurricane sacrifices the matchups against Fighting-types. Overall Master League suits Yveltal quite well, though potential moveset rebalances in the future might help it climb up the ranks more.
