Happy 6th Anniversary of FGO, y’all! Boy, it feels weird knowing that this whole game and my own part in it has gone on for so long. That in turn makes about 5 and a half years I’ve been writing MMM’s, which is probably more crazy to consider.

While time goes on, gacha is eternal. And in this case, we’ve got a vixen to at least slap a few times before welcoming her into the collection (if you’re fortunate enough).

Introduction

They really couldn’t have called her Tamamo Vicci to make it easier for this old geezer’s memory? Well, guess now’s as good a time as any to learn how to spell Koyanskaya. In any case Nasu has resorted to wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey nonsense to have Koyanskaya (or at least, an aspect of her) join us before we actually do the things that make her want to join. Boy does the whole Saint Graph and memory retention thing in FGO make some weird circumstances.

But who cares, she’s hot. And unlike Tamamo or Tamamo Cat, she isn’t brain damaged or pretending to be something so hard that it becomes true. A true, honest-to-self, bitch working 9-5.

Overview

The Assassin class has never been the poster child for good base stats, due to their low Hp and Atk modifiers on top of the class’s inherent 0.9x attack modifier. But to that point, being a big fish in a small pond is all the better for it.

In Koyanskaya’s case, she’s got one of the better deals, coming in with the 4th best Attack of the SSR Assassins, and the 5th best HP. While that sounds kind of middling, King Hassan’s crazy statline makes a big outlier which doesn’t highlight how Koyanskaya’s sitting neatly above the average statline for an Assassin of her rarity - with more Attack and HP than Jack, Kama, and Old Li.

And that isn’t even counting her passives. Boy does she have those. With Riding B, Independent Action EX and Independent Manifestation C, Morph A (but as a passive), and Goddess Metamorphosis (Gun) B. No, don’t ask me how you get a Gun form of Goddess Metamorphosis. Like hell I know.

In any case, those passives add up together for an 8% Quick boost, 18% Critical Damage Up, 6% Instant Death and Mental Debuff Resist, 10% Arts boost and Star Drop Rate, and most importantly 20% NP damage up. So not only is Koyanskaya’s NP gain and stargen notably bumped, but she also has good passive critical damage output and a moderate steroid on her NP at base.

Yeah, she has some pretty crazy stats to work with as a baseline.

First on Koyanskaya’s skill lineup is Innovator Bunny A. This skill is like DW realized that putting a 1-turn skill cooldown acceleration skill on Maid Alter wasn’t broken even after trying to put a drawback on it, so they went a little too far and created one of the best support skills to ever grace the game.

This skill is an ally-targeted 50% gauge charger and 2-turn skill cooldown acceleration, at the low, low cost of 1k HP from every Servant on the frontline. Okay, so the downside is reasonably harsh, but you can’t argue with targeted gauge charge and a cooldown bump! Even with this skill naturally making Koyanskaya a farming support option, the cooldown acceleration can actually help for farming, as it means 6-turn base cooldown skills popped on turn 1 will come back for turn 3 (4 turn CD after reaching skill level 10. 4CD->2CD after skill, Ticks to 1 on Wave 2, Ticks to 0 on Wave 3).That may end up mattering for options like, I dunno, Barghest, so just keep it in mind, it may have applications outside of CQ’s.

But just in general, this is an obscene support skill and should be respected as such, even if it comes with a hefty 10 turns base cooldown. Koyanskaya can always just use it for herself, too, since technically she’s also got an offensive NP to be gauge-charged for.

Next on the lineup is Killing Technique (Human) A. Well, after everything that happened in LB5.2 I’m not particularly shocked.

What is more shocking is that this Effective damage skill is yet another ally target, granting a 50% Special Attack modifier versus both [Human] trait and [Human] attribute individually, as well as a buff which grants 10% NP gauge for each normal Buster card used for 3 turns.

I guess Koyanskaya’s Buster card NP gain is actually crazy good?

Last but not least, this skill provides a sizable 20 star bomb on use. I can’t really think of more to talk about on that part, since nothing else in this skill relates to critting.

For the Effective Damage buffs of this skill, the chosen traits come in two flavours - very specific and general. As it seems to go for most which split their traits into 2 individual buffs rather than a combined buff (like Scathach’s skill versus Raiko’s skill). [Human] trait is very much as it says on the tin, it only works on enemies who are regular humans or at least were at some point - such as the KnK Zombies and Ghosts, Salem villagers, and Kirshtaria. Yup, that’s right, go ahead and pit Koyanskaya in a cage match versus the blonde boy while the memorial quest lasts - it’s her specialty.

[Human], or [Man] attribute as some may call it, is much simpler. One of the 4 major attributes in the game, it contains the most Servants of any attribute, 142 Servants, as well as pretty much every single enemy which resembles a human and isn’t specifically a god or creature from folklore.

Point being, the effective damage bonus is very likely to land on something frequently, and even then the NP gain on Buster cards buff and Starbomb are also pretty neat. The 8 turns cooldown on this thing is fair considering its frequent power.

Last on the list we have NFF Special A. Now this skill is…

Hang on a second, my Merlin’s going on vacation. How long, buddy? “Forever”? Okay, gotcha.

In any case, this skill is a 3-turn 50% Buster buff targeting any ally, so it’s pretty easy to draw why Merlin’s taking a long-deserved break. And at the same time, I have to take back some of my remarks on Morgan’s evaluation since apparently Buster does have a 50% gauge charger support with good offensive buffs. Staying on track though, this skill also provides a 50% Critical Damage Up buff and a huge Buster Card Star Focus buff for the same duration, setting up any Servant, even Berserkers lacking a star focus button of their own, to land some nasty Buster crits.

Or, like every other skill in her lineup, Koyanskaya can use it on herself and become a pretty nasty critical damage Assassin.

So this skill in combination with Killing Technique (Human) can be pretty nasty, providing a huge 125% damage boost for 3 turns if you meet 1 of the effective traits. But even without, +50% damage is still better than what Buster farmers were getting before for their 50% gauge charge options.

As you may expect, this skill is also on a 8 turn base cooldown, entirely fair for the power of its supportive potential.

Now for the most unique part of Koyanskaya’s supportive kit - her NP isn’t a support NP.

I’m not even really making a joke here. I honestly think she’d be worse if she didn’t have a damaging NP. I’ll elaborate:

Spirit Cannon - Type-79 Disaster Blasting Shrine is a Buster AOE NP, as you might expect from the Buster buff her kit’s throwing around. Just looking at the basic properties of this NP, it is notable for having 8 hits, which in combination with Koyanskaya’s high stargen rate means it will provide a notable sum of stars at a baseline, roughly 11 when hitting 3 targets, though it may vary with Overkill and Buster boost.

But what’s more interesting is the effects - before damage Koyanskaya gets a nifty 20% Attack buff for a turn, meaning her kit in its entirety provides a 3-turn 116% NP steroid. Not bad at all, though she does need a lot of damage to compensate for the difficulty in chaining Buster NP’s. The real meat and potatoes of this NP is the after-damage effects, reducing the NP gauge of all targets by 1 step, then charging the team’s NP gauge by 10%, scaling up with Overcharge.

Both effects there are quite useful. A gauge drain is always a handy contribution to difficult content, stalling out the enemy NP’s for a turn, while the team gauge charge can get very out of hand quickly. Take, for example, a Morgan/Merlin/Koyanskaya team where Koyanskaya is getting off a 400% overcharge NP on a 3rd NP chain while everyone also gets Merlin’s NP buffs, providing an immediate refund of 30% gauge to everyone after the chain. It also just helps Koyanskaya’s own contribution as an Assassin AOE farmer, as the extra 20% gauge over 3 turns lets her run non-LB Kaleido as a CE option, increasing her flexibility.

The part where I say having a damaging NP is better for her, however, is in farming situations. Koyanskaya is the first targeted 50% gauge charger Servant to have a damaging NP, and a decently powerful one at that (especially if she can use her Buster boost on herself). As a result, she actually becomes a pretty good option for a 3rd support after double Skadi/Casturia on farming maps, where she can run a gauge CE and use her own NP to contribute to the 3rd wave if the main farmer’s damage isn’t enough, or be the AOE waveclear in more abnormal enemy compositions found in 90+ nodes where having a ST farmer is necessary.

She’s very flexible is what I’m saying. She can be the primary farming Servant, a straightforward support, or a backup AOE NP while not detracting from the gauge charge quota of a farming composition.

While that does hurt her potential as a support for more difficult content where defensive support is necessary (since Koyanskaya’s defensive support is literally limited to her gauge drain), it’s a tradeoff for her flexibility. And she wouldn’t have it without an offensive NP.

Conclusion

So how good is Koyanskaya in actual factual? Well on one hand she’s got two tickets to the gun show and you’re invited:

By providing both 50% gauge charge and potentially very powerful offensive buffs to a Buster offensive Servant, Koyanskaya elevates Buster’s strength on the whole a lot in the present meta. Buster’s eternal issue since Casturia came out has been that they only have one card booster support without running something funky with Nightingale, and said support lacks a 50% gauge charge. Koyanskaya resolves that issue, making Buster farming much more powerful and flexible, especially since all Buster farming comps aren’t dependent on NP refund calculations (which often can hit walls in Berserker and Assassin nodes, due to their 0.8x and 0.9x NP gain modifiers).

Koyanskaya herself makes an impressive addition to the AOE Assassin farming lineup. While Kiichi Hogen, Summer Ushi, and Summer Scathach have always been options, they’re all Quick and have some issues to work through to make their loops work. Meanwhile, Koyanskaya provides both consistently solid damage and looping with relatively little investment, though it is a little sad you can’t support Koyanskaya with 2 copies of herself, having to turn to Reines or Waver for the remaining support options.

I may have passed over it a little bit when evaluating her kit, but Koyanskaya is a really nice crit support for Buster teams. Her Buster buff doubles as a very powerful Critical steroid, which when combined with her effective damage buff can really shred through the right foes. And like everything in her kit, that applies to both Koyanskaya herself and a potential support target like Arjuna Alter or Morgan.

But on the other hand, she can get jammed easily:

Koyanskaya, for all her great contributions to farming, can meet issues in CQ’s. Her defensive contributions to the team are practically zero, which in turn means all the defensive support is placed in the hands of the other support Servant in use. Merlin might be able to carry the slack in some cases, but it can prove an issue when rolling with other options. This doesn’t matter if Koyanskaya herself is the main damage dealer, but regardless it leaves a flaw in compositions where you wish to use her buffing utility.

In my imaginary family of evaluation writers with no life, there is a saying passed down from generation to generation - “Lewd is life”.

And there’s also a second saying - “All Arco Wada Servants are Lewd”. Put together, that simply means Koyanskaya is a lifestyle, not a Servant to roll on the gacha. She even seems to imply her summoning is part of some sort of self-fulfilling time loop, so you’re almost obliged to roll her.

But all joking aside, Koyanskaya is a vital addition to FGO’s major support lineup. While she isn’t anything close to a replacement for Merlin, she does fill a big gap in the support lineup which Merlin doesn’t, and in turn becomes a valuable option for farming setups. Consider her to Merlin what Reines is to Waver - an alternative option which isn’t strictly better or worse, but brings different, unique tools to the table as well as a different class if you want to work around class advantage.

Needless to say, if you intend on using any Buster Servants for any real purpose in the future she’s well worth getting your hands on. Touch that fluffy tail. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.

Outro

Anniversary is pretty wild this year, if I’m frank. Even putting Koyanskaya aside, Append Skills make farming a lot more interesting, as there are a number of Servants who became possible to farm with or build around easier with the addition of a 10-20% starting gauge charge separate from a CE. Most importantly, it means my Karna can now NP turn 1 without a gauge CE when running with Merlin and Koyanskaya.

I’m also very happy about the 120 Grail cap now. Experience cards have been very...extra for a while now with a huge supply if you put the time in farming events for little payoff outside of building collection. The massive EXP dump you need to get a Servant to 120 actually incentivizes getting them en-masse, which also leaves me with another long term project to work on.

...Anything’s better than Fou prints at this point.

And as for next time, we’ll be looking at the third and final gacha for LB6. What can I say about it? What if I say I'm not like the others? What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays? What if I say you’ll find out in a few days?
