In painting I excel, I’m playful as a fairy, and when I draw my sword I can do battle with even the Forty-seven Ronin! I am the peerless ukiyo-e artist, “Katsushika Hokusai!”

Even as she gets older her personality remains unchanged!
Obsessed with reading, the young “Katsushika Oui” came to admire “fairies!”

“I’m exceptionally strong and quick-witted, the peerless ukiyo-e artist! And if I can have a glamorous kimono, that’d be great too!”

…O-Ei might be a bit too excited. (Her father is here too)

“I'll draw an' paint an' cut the opponents down at random! ...Hm? What is it, Father? "This is a dark past you'll blotch out with ink"...?”

The Saber incarnation of Hokusai is an Oui whose desire to be a storybook warrior rivals her desire to be an artist. Innocent and curious, if a bit immature, she is a single-target Arts damage dealer boasting high NP damage as well as good affinity towards critical damage.

Being a welfare, Hokusai’s greatest asset is her essentially guaranteed NP5, which gives her a major edge against most competitors. The NP’s own NP Damage buff further builds upon this strong offensive base, but she is able to take it one step further with the Arts Performance buff from Pseudonym, Dragon-Crested Octopus B. Aside from her powerful NP, Hokusai is also equipped with various critical-oriented tools, ranging from Instant Critical Stars, Star Absorption Up and even Critical Damage Up, allowing her to be a quite reliable critical damage dealer with a well-supported team. Rounding up her kit are the NP Charge from Divine Power (Ink) C and Guts from Father-Daughter Connection B, the latter of which gives her some extra leeway in terms of survivability.

Hokusai does require some external support to function properly, as her self-buffed NP refund won’t be nearly enough for an NP Spam, and despite her various critical buffs, Hokusai herself cannot produce enough stars in a consistent manner. She is also reliant on supports in terms of survivability and long-term sustain.

Nevertheless, these weaknesses don’t take away from Hokusai’s sheer damage potential, and they can be quite easily fixed by using the right supports. All in all, Hokusai can be considered a very solid Servant even at release, and with the release of a certain Arts support, she might well be one of the most powerful free damage dealer options in the entire game.

High ST NP Damage

With all but guaranteed NP5 and two offensive buffs to provide additional damage boost, Hokusai’s NP Damage is impressive to say the least, and she can go even further with the help of proper supports. With 8 hits to its name, A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces is able to provide a good amount of refund, especially when external Arts Performance buffs are involved.

Critical Damage Affinity

With a Critical Damage buff as well as a Star Absorption buff, Hokusai is well-placed to convert available critical stars into damage. While Hokusai herself doesn’t produce a lot of stars from her Command Cards, she is able to use Divine Power (Ink)’s instant critical stars to provide an extra boost when necessary.

Reliant on External Support

While Hokusai has the makings of a powerful damage dealer, both her NP refund as well as her star generation capabilities are rather limited on their own, which severely hinders her from reaching her full damage dealing potential. On the flip side, having a well-supported party will significantly boost her performance, especially if they can cover both aspects of Hokusai’s playstyle.

Lacks Long-Term Sustain

Although Father-Daughter Connection’s Guts provides some leeway in terms of survivability, Hokusai’s lack of any sort of healing/defense buff/hard defensive skill means that she can have some survivability issues in longer fights. Fortunately, as an Arts Servant, she is generally able to find suitable defensive supports easily, making this problem a minor one in most practical cases.

In general, it’s recommended to max Divine Power (Ink), while Pseudonym, Dragon-Crested Octopus should be level 6 at the very least. Meanwhile, Father-Daughter Connection can be left at a lower level if resources are an issue.

  • Divine Power (Ink) charges Hokusai’s NP gauge while also providing a decent amount of critical stars instantly. Both effects scale with skill level, and the cooldown reductions gained at levels 6 and 10 help improve Hokusai’s overall consistency. At level 10, this skill allows an instant NP with a Kaleidoscope. If such a capability is desired, this skill should be leveled first; otherwise, level it second after Pseudonym, Dragon-Crested Octopus.
  • The Star Absorption Up provided by Father-Daughter Connection lasts for 3 turns, and is what makes Hokusai a viable critical damage dealer. It also provides a one-time Guts, allowing Hokusai to survive through enemy NPs. However, as the Absorption Up effect is arguably strong enough at base level and the increased HP from Guts is rather insignificant, the reduced cooldown is left as the primary benefit of maxing this skill. As such, it has the lowest leveling priority of Hokusai’s three skills.
  • Pseudonym, Dragon-Crested Octopus B acts as Hokusai’s primary damage boosting skill, providing her with a 3-turn Arts Performance buff. The second part of the skill’s effect increases Hokusai’s Critical Damage for 3 turns whenever she deals a critical hit, though this should generally be viewed as more of a bonus. Nevertheless, the Arts Performance buff remains indispensable to increase her NP damage as well as refund, and this skill should be leveled second (or even first, if the 20% NP Charge threshold of Divine Power (Ink) is deemed unnecessary).

Craft Essence Recommendation

As with many damage dealers, Starting NP Gauge Craft Essences are Hokusai’s best friends. In regards to secondary offensive effects, Arts Performance Up, NP Damage Up and Attack Up are recommended, as well as Critical Damage Up to a lesser extent.

  •  Dive to Blue / Holy Night Supper / Golden Sumo: Boulder Tournament / Painting Summer / The Classic Three Great Heroes: These hybrid Starting NP CEs are excellent choices for most stages, as the mix of Starting NP and offensive effects make for flexible options.
  • Kaleidoscope / The Imaginary Element (MLB): These CEs allow Hokusai to unleash a very early NP (potentially instant in the case of Kaleidoscope, with level 10 on her first skill). They are great picks for when she is used in the backline, or otherwise when a very early NP timing is desired.
  • The Black Grail: This CE builds upon Hokusai’s powerful NP even further, increasing her damage output to astronomical options. As it lacks Starting NP and deals damage every turn, however, it should be used only with a properly supported team.
  • Formal Craft / Royal Icing / Mark on a Smiling Face / Meeting of the Heirs / Emerald Float / Kaleid Sapphire / Projection: These CEs are more of filler options, but can be used if other Starting NP Gauge CEs are unavailable, especially if Hokusai is put in the frontlines. Nevertheless, without external support, it will take some time until Hokusai charges her NP, which can pose a problem in faster-paced fights.

Character Info

As was the child, so is the woman! Katsushika Oui has set out to become a fairy right out of the illustrated stories she loved in her youth!

"I'm an ukiyo-e artist who is both strong and smart! And this extra flashy kimono is the cherry on top!"

...Oei, don't you have too much going on? (Toto-sama's here, too)

Profile 1

Height/Weight: 162cm, 51kg
Origin: History
Region: Japan
Alignment: Chaotic-Good
Gender: Female
The slimy thing is Toto-sama, a bonus accessory. He followed along for some reason.

Profile 2

Oui dreamt of becoming a fairy-tale character more than an ukiyo-e artist during her youth, and this is what that girl is like all grown up.
This Oui has yet to experience the obstacles of artistry and the frustrations of divorce, and she has a heady confidence in her own artistic talents that would one day surpass her own Father, Hokusai.

With her heart set on surpassing her father, she takes the name "Katsushika Hokusai" without permission, even though she is still a greenhorn. Even so, there's something about her that the adult Oui lacks.

Profile 3

Oui wholeheartedly believed her father's dubious tale that the Hokusai clan had familial relations with the warrior retainers of the Kira family from the famous "Chuushingura" tales, and so she developed a sense of pride as a swordswoman. On top of that, she pored over reference materials, such as literature from Takizawa Bakin and the Chinese novel "Water Margin." She let her imagination run wild, which led to her looking the way she does.

The legend of Katsushika Hokusai being the great-grandchild of Kobayashi Heihachirou, retainer to the tragically fated Kira Family, is unclear. And if it is true, Oui would be the great-great-granddaughter of Kobayashi Heihachirou.

Profile 4

Divine Power (Ink): C
Oui is so into the idea of fairy-tale stuff that she's started brewing old Chinese medicinal drinks and trying to divine people's fortunes from their facial structure. After all, 'tis the season for everyone to get heated up and obsess over that sort of thing.

Father-Daughter Connection: B
The incompatible thoughts between a father who watches over his naive daughter, and the daughter who wishes to surpass her father and be acknowledged.

Pseudonym, Dragon-Crested Octopus: B
The abyssal evil god's madness. His tentacles sink into his own daughter's spirit. Perhaps their love of travelling and wandering may have caused them to change into a different Class...?

Profile 5

[A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces]
Rank: B
NP Type: Anti-Personnel
Range: 1 - ?
Maximum Target: 8

Shokoku Taki Meguri.
An Oyo Muhen Tenkai Hishou (Heaven's Soaring Boundlessness) longsword technique that was inspired by various famous waterfalls, inviting everyone to a trip to visit waterfalls to cut through the summer heat.
There are a total of eight famous waterfall prints, which were painted after the "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" painting. The names of the waterfalls are:
Kirifuri Waterfall on Mount Kurokami in Shimotsuke Province
Kiyotaki Kannon Waterfall at Sakanoshita on the Toukaidou
Aoigaoka Falls in the Eastern Capital
Rouben Waterfall at Ouyama in Sagami Province
The Waterfall Where Yoshitsune Washed His Horse at Yoshino in Yamato Province
Yourou Waterfall in Mino Province
Ono Waterfall on the Kisokaidou
and The Amida Falls in the Far Reaches of the Kisokaidou Road.

Profile 6

Rather than any of his disciples, she was the one to inherit her father's penname, Katsushika Hokusai. Her wish is to enhance their fame even more, and she hopes her father will watch over her success.
She knows that she is still a fledgling, but she's confident in her own creativity. As a Servant, she is brimming with curiosity, and believes a desire to learn is more important than raw talent.
The tomboyish and vivacious personality is Oui herself, but at times she does find a modest, shy side of herself.

Ascension 1 Oh, sorry. There's no costume change this time.
This is my best get-up.
How 'bout it, Master?
Do I look like a fairy-tale samurai of Edo right now?
Ascension 2 This swimsuit thing is growing on me.
It's nice and lightweight like one of those yumoji garments worn at the bathhouses. already buck naked from the get-go.
Ascension 3 I'm gonna make a fresh start...renewing my Spirit Origin here.
Hmmm? What's up, Master?
My appearance ain't gonna change even if you keep staring at me like that. weren't looking at my swimsuit...but me?
...Dummy. Dummy! Master, you're a dummy!
Ascension 4 Oh, how delightful! I'm much obliged!
And my amateur swordsmanship's not bad, right?
I look forward to your continued patronage, Master.
Hmmm, Toto-sama's grumbling about something again.
What? My sword's like something a street performer'd have? Shut up! Martial arts is another form of art!
At this rate, I'm gonna master all types of martial arts! Ahahahaha!
...Well, at least spare me from doing housework, okay?
Bond Level 1 Don't need a blade to kill a painter, just give 'em three deadlines.
Ahhh, terrifying. I gotta swallow some candied tubers whole.
Bond Level 2 Oh, good timing, Master.
Wanna know your fortune?
See, just take this folded rice cracker and...
Ahaha! You swallowed it!
Bond Level 3 Uh-huh...bein' crass, eh?
I don't mind. Things like that don't bother me at all.
Fairies are like that.
I'm used to seeing erotic pictures because Toto-sama's workplace has a bunch of 'em.
(Sputter) What about in real-life experience!?
W-w-w-w-w-what about you, Master!?
I-i-i-if you keep going, I'll pull out all your hair to make a lacquer brush with it!
Bond Level 4 Hmmm, something's weird.
I feel a little off when I swing my sword around...
N-no, it's okay! I don't have a fever or anything!
J-just stand back a bit, Master!
It's not what you think.
Just stay in the room...okay...?
Bond Level 5 If a Servant is like a dream painted by man, then I'm a figment of a dream's dream.
It's so fleeting. But that's okay in itself.
I'm different than Toto-sama. Trying to cling onto something isn't tasteful.
Yet, Master...
I hope you'll be the one person who will never forget me, no matter what kind of stupid things I do. That is my dream.
Conversation 1 Time to rake in some funds, Master!
Conversation 2 I'd be happy if my flimsy handiwork could be of some help to you.
Ask me anything... I'd pick the fleas off cats or even clean your ears.
Losing you, Master, would be soba-d, I'd rather give up a bowl of delicious soba from the famed Shinshu area.
Conversation 3 What I don't like is that thing...
Talkin' about love. That's like my weakness...
S-stop it, okay?
I won't hesitate to slice ya up even if you're my Master!
Conversation 4 (Katsushika Hokusai) Gnnnngh...I don't like it one bit.
That broad's boasting that she sealed me away because I was her dark past.
Just seeing her face pisses me right off.
Hey, you're on my side, right, Master?
...Huh? Try to be friendly with her as much as I can?
Hmph! Only if I feel up to it!
Conversation 5 (Abigail Williams) The Foreigner...Abigail?
She's like this mysterious fiend when she's out on the battlefield, but I'm a bit relieved to see that she's still a callow little girl.
I can see she'll be quite a beauty when she grows up.
Hm? That's strange to say about a Servant, I guess. Ahahaha.
A beauty, huh?
Maybe I should paint her one of these days.
Conversation 6 (Abigail Williams + Katsushika Hokusai) That Abigail girl from the West seems to have taken a liking to me.
Wait...did you just say "Tentacle Iron Bar"?
You just blurted that weird name out of the blue, you made me spit out my amazake.
Huh? That was another one of Toto-sama's pseudonyms?
That's just bonkers, Toto-sama!
Conversation 7 (Tamamo-no-Mae, Tamamo (Lancer)) Oh right, Master.
Did you think about that thing we talked about earlier?
For me to be an apprentice to that fairy, that celestial maiden...the great Tamamo-no-Mae.
Eh? She'll put me on a crash course in marriage training rather than train me in sage techniques!?
N-no, I wouldn't want that at all!
Conversation 8 (Suzuka Gozen) The demon princess, Suzuka Gozen...
We're both Sabers, and we seem to be the same age, too.
I really want to get along so she can teach me her divine powers.
But the thing is, I don't know what the heck her high school thing is. Is that something I should copy and follow suit?
Y-yo, princess...?
That wack tappy-ohka drink will totes go bye-ral and I'm seriously doing it for the gram...???
Conversation 9 (Yu Mei-ren, Clear Lostbelt No. 3) Even I know that Yu Mei-ren is that tragic beauty.
And now she acts like an old-timer here in Chaldea!?
On top of that, she's an immortal fairy!?
I need to work up my courage to ask her if I can be her kouhai, just like Master.
Likes Heh, I love to read yomi-hon!
I think they're called "light novels" in modern times?
Oh, I'm glad to hear that you're interested in them too, Master!
But you know...
Toto-sama picked a fight with master Bakin, so our jobs for yomi-hon greatly decreased. I was so bitter, and we're totally strapped for cash now!
Dislikes Uh...I'm unrefined and inexperienced...
I'm not so good at being taken care of or getting looked after by others.
Wielding swords or brushes and doing things as I please suits me better.
...I hope you take good care of yourself, Master.
About the Holy Grail Training for the sword is one thing, but my dream is to become a fairy!
You know, the sort of thing outta a fairy tale who won't lose to men, is wise, charming like a flower, and is master of various sage techniques, like someone who shows up in those Chinese stories like the "Water Margin" or "Journey to the West."
Wait a minute? Has part of my dream come true already?
How about it, Master? (Giggle, giggle)
What'd you just say, Toto-sama!? I haven't accomplished any of that stuff!?
Tch! I know that!
During an Event Come on, Master!
Fires and fights are what paints the town of Edo red!
You sure you want to lounge 'round like that?
Birthday Huh? Birth-DAY?
Doesn't everyone just get a year older on the first day of the year? If you don't do that, some people'll get close in age with each other, and that's weird!
Hahaha, sorry, Master. Don't give me that disappointed look.
I'll give you a word of celebration... Congrats.
I may be a Servant who never ages anymore, but you go ahead and keep on adding years to yourself...
Summon Yo, Master! Is this the first time we're meeting?
Nah, we're old pals already, aren't we?
I'm the best when I paint, I'm like a fairy when I play, and I can mix it up like the Forty-Seven when I draw a blade!
The extraordinary female ukio-e painter, Katsushika Hokusai...that's me!
What? Good for me to have my guardian tag along?
Gah, how rude!
I'm gonna make Toto-sama retire once and for all!
Temporary Saber, Katsushika Oui...
I mean..."Katsushika Hokusai!"
Take a look here at Toto-sama's color print titled "Raid of Chuushingura."
Believe it or not, a great swordsman who served under Kira Yoshinaka's lead retainer is Toto-sama's great-grandfather!
Which means the blood of a master swordsman flows through my veins too!
Yeah! I can't contain myself! I'm not gonna be some hack ukiyo-e artist anymore!
My enemies will split in two with a single stroke of my brush! I'll paint and paint and cut 'em all down!
Hm? What's that, Toto-sama?
You wish you could ink over this part?
Ahahaha, whatever could ya mean?
