PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Using Razor Leaf + Grass Knot, Roserade is one of the best Grass specialists.

  • Roserade is an elite Poison attacker with Poison Jab + Sludge Bomb.

  • Bullet Seed is a downgrade in PvE offense.

  • Solar Beam and Leaf Storm are directly inferior to Grass Knot, which is a fantastic Grass-type move.

  • Dazzling Gleam serves no purpose for Roserade on offense.

  • Weather Ball Fire lacks STAB and doesn't suit Roserade's role on offense.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Razor Leaf is stronger than Poison Jab, but also more widely resisted.

  • Bullet Seed has the worst damage output on defense.

  • Sludge Bomb combines power, an early damage window, and 2 bars.

  • Grass Knot is an okay choice but offers no coverage.

  • Dazzling Gleam has passable neutral coverage, but it’s easy to dodge.

  • Roserade’s durability is too poor to warrant using Leaf Storm or Solar Beam.

  • Weather Ball Fire can be used frequently as a 3-bar move, and hurts Ice-type attackers.

PVE Overview

Every Roserade has its toxic thorns and razor sharp leaves, apparently. Roselia was once ubiquitous but useless, but its evolution justifies the hassle catching them. At the time of writing, Roserade is both the top non-Mega Grass and Poison attacker in GO. Its glory is mitigated by Grass having lots of competition and Poison being a relatively useless offensive type. Still, its ability to do double duty makes Roselia a good candidate for a Sinnoh Stone and possibly dual charged moves.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Bullet Seed* or Poison Jab or Razor Leaf + Weather Ball Fire* and Grass Knot or Sludge Bomb

Bullet Seed features high energy generation and poor damage output, making it more preferable for utilizing Roserade's charge moves and applying shield pressure. Razor Leaf is the polar opposite, emphasizing high damage output with STAB at the cost of having the worst energy gains. Poison Jab offers a balance in the middle in terms of both damage output and energy generation, in addition to its Poison-type coverage.

Weather Ball Fire is a move limited to Elite TMs and specific events like Community Day, but is highly recommended due to its low energy cost and efficient Damage Per Energy (DPE). Grass Knot and Sludge Bomb require the same 50 energy and deal respectable STAB damage, and either can be chosen depending on the coverage needed. Leaf Storm costs slightly more energy, and is considered a higher risk vs reward play. Dazzling Gleam and Solar Beam demand way too much energy to use consistently.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Roserade's offensively-oriented stat-spread leaves it quite vulnerable due to the CP cap of Great League. The addition of Weather Ball Fire isn't particularly unique, as Cherrim (Sunshine Form) sports a very similar moveset. Between the two, Roserade offers more consistent Grass-type coverage thanks to Grass Knot demanding less energy than Cherrim's Solar Beam, and Roserade is more flexible with additional Poison-type coverage options, but Roserade is more frail and has below average bulk compared to the meta. A Grass/Poison typing is generally considered more safer than pure Grass typing, but this doesn't solve Roserade's bulk problem.

Ultra League: 2 / 5

As a Grass-type, access to Weather Ball Fire is quite valuable against other Grass-types, in addition to common Steel Pokemon in this league. Unfortunately Roserade's fragility is its primary setback, with losses outside of 2-shield fights against level 50 Abomasnow despite the latter's double weakness to Fire-type attacks. Roserade's role as a Grass-type may be difficult against certain Water-types with either counter coverage or secondary typings to neutralize their weakness to Grass-type attacks, while its Poison-type coverage isn't necessary to beat Togekiss unless both shields are used.

Master League: 2 / 5

Roserade lacks stats, in particular bulk stats, to compete well in Master League. Due to the stat differences in Master League compared to Ultra, Roserade can't beat Togekiss in any even-shielding scenario without Poison-type coverage, which means sacrificing something else in its moveset choices. The fast moveset of Bullet Seed + Weather Ball Fire is needed to challenge Metagross, while Poison Jab movesets are too slow to keep up with Swampert should the latter successfully bait a shield with Hydro Cannon. Overall the difficulties and consistency problems with Roserade makes it discouraging to use effectively, and other popular picks might be a better choice.
