Overview

Genesect has it very rough as a raid boss. It sports a 2x weakness to Fire, which is a type that has a few very powerful Pokemon. All but one of its attacks are resisted by Fire Type alone, and its one counter-type is boosted in Clear weather, which is common in many areas. While not a complete push-over, these factors weigh very, very heavily against it. to the point where a solo is definitely viable, especially in clear weather. That said, this guide will focus primarily on the duo, which is substantially easier to manage.

Note that the various Techno Blast variants of Genesect won't actually use these attacks in the raid, so this guide works regardless of the Genesect version that you're taking on.

Approach

Team composition

  • Fire Types are the only true counters

  • Heatran has DPS well above duo level with absurd TDO to back it up

  • If aiming for the Solo, then you're going to need either Mega Blaziken or Mega Charizard Y, alongside Shadow Blaziken, Shadow Moltres, and Shadow Reshiram.

    • In general, you're going to need to wait for Clear weather to manage the solo.

  • Primal Groudon's damage is down from the big-name Fire Mega Evolutions, but it still hits duo-worthy numbers and has the advantage of boosting the team even when on the bench, making it insanely valuable if you have a full team of non-Mega Pokemon that have the DPS needed for the solo.

  • All of the Pokemon on this page are viable for the Duo at Lv.40.

Battling strategy

  • For the Duo, focus on TDO-centric counters like Heatran and Reshiram with a few DPS options front-loaded.

  • Dodging Hyper Beam is definitely recommended

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters
Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The DPS king for this raid, Mega Blaziken hits extremely hard and can manage to make this raid substantially easier. If you need some help beating the clock, then this is definitely the best option.

Mega Charizard Y Mega Charizard Y
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Charizard Y has lower DPS than Mega Blaziken, but it's still within solo-range and has higher average TDO as well. Either one of the top Mega Evolutions are perfect picks for the Solo, but Mega Charizard Y may be a bit better for the Duo, where DPS generally isn't a worry.

Good Mega Evolutions
Primal Groudon Primal Groudon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not on a par with the above in terms of DPS, Primal Groudon's Primal Boost helps the entire team even when it's on the bench, making it extremely useful for select solo runs, especially in Sunny weather as these two boosts stack to bring a lot of Pokemon up to solo-viable DPS. It's also worth noting that Primal Groudon itself has duo-worthy DPS, so it's not dead weight unto itself, but it still can't make the solo work without a team that has DPS substantially above the golden 50.

Mega Charizard X Mega Charizard X
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

You pressed the wrong button; go back and press the one with a "Y" in it.

Honestly though, Mega Charizard X is an okay option for the duo, hitting decently hard. However, it doesn't have any advantages over its Y variant.

Mega Houndoom Mega Houndoom
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While sub-optimal when compared to the two big-names, Mega Houndoom is still a solid secondary/budget option for the duo.

Supreme Counters
shadow_chandelure Shadow Chandelure
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Chandelure sports nuclear levels of Fire damage, and a resistance to everything that Genesect can throw it save Hyper Beam... which it double resists. This is an outstanding option, and one of the absolute strongest counters to Genesect for those lucky enough to have one raised.

Reshiram Reshiram
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The Fire legend itself, Reshiram sports outstanding performance rivaled by few and objectively surpassed only by the big Mega Evolutions. It's hard to go wrong with the dragon of Truth, though it's a bit low on DPS for the Solo without a weather boost

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Heatran can't really hit the numbers needed for the solo, but it's easy mode for the Duo. this thing is well above duo-required damage, and it lasts forever, hitting hard and resisting or double-resisting Gensect's entire moveset. If you're not going for the solo, then Heatran makes this raid very easy!

ShadowMoltres Shadow Moltres
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The shadow forme of the original big Fire-Type, Shadow Moltres still puts in outstanding work while also having the same great typing of Mega Charizard Y, allowing it to withstand Genesect's assaults for a surprisingly long time.

Shadow-Ho-oh Shadow Ho-Oh
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

One of the top DPS options with great TDO to back it up, Shadow Ho-oh is a premier counter for this raid, and a universally great pick. An Apex Shadow Ho-oh sporting Sacred Fire+ is ideal, but normal Sacred Fire is still perfectly fine. Just please don't purify it!

Shadow_Blaziken Shadow Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Evolution isn't the only way that Blaziken can be viable. In its Shadow forme, it's a bit glassy but sports the highest non-Mega DPS for this raid. Just be ready to back it up with some higher TDO options in the duo to avoid having to reloby.

Good Counters
ShadowEntei Shadow Entei
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Entei is comparable to Shadow Moltres, with the traditional DPS/TDO trade-off that we've seen in so many cases. Overlooked, but genuinely good.

ShadowCharizard Shadow Charizard
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Another overlooked yet strong counter, Shadow Charizard is comparable to Shadow Blaziken with its lower DPS but higher TDO. But on that note, it's still an objectively worse Shadow Moltres most of the time.

Shadow Typhlosion Shadow Typhlosion
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not as good as the above Shadow Starters, Shadow Tyhlosion is extremely overlooked as a Fire Type attacker, and is still able to put in some outstanding performance.

Shadow Magmortar Shadow Magmortar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The victim of a terrible moveset, Shadow Magmortar still has the power to at least be a solid attacker.

Chandelure Chandelure
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The premier burning-ghost, Chandelure has the same rare trait of double resisting Hyper Beam as its Shadow forme, giving it a worthwhile niche to back up its great overall performance.

Volcarona Volcarona
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The Grand Bug itself, Volcarona comes in with great average performance that makes it a very worthwhile Pokemon to utilize on this raid.

Darmanitan Darmanitan
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

One of the true-vanilla Fire Types, Darmanitan is a solid team filler, though it's a bit glassy.

ShadowArcanine Shadow Arcanine
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Another option with a sub-optimal moveset, Shadow Arcanine is a worthy team-filler.

Shadow Salamence Shadow Salamence

Glass Counters
ShadowHoundoom Shadow Houndoom
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
Shadow Mewtwo Shadow Mewtwo
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite the fact that Genesect resists Psycho Cut, Shadow Mewtwo can still put in decent numbers here with Flamethrower... just beware of Bug Type movesets.

Tank Counters
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Sacred Fire is preferred over Sacred Fire++ despite being weaker because no Apex Shadow Ho-oh should ever be purified!
