September/October Community Day Moves and Voting Period Revealed

Submit Feedback or Error

Niantic has fully revealed what the upcoming vote for our September/October Community Day candidates will entail! This community day, the 3rd of its kind thus far, will allow players to vote for their favorite choice, with the top two picks featured. We're entering fall with a bang, so let's take a look at what we have to pick from!

Community Day Choice 1: Charmander

Community Day Move: Dragon Breath

The original Pseudo-dragon of Generation 1 is being given the opportunity to wield a Dragon type fast move in preparation for its future Fire/Draon Type Mega Evolution; Mega Chartizard X. This move is lackluster in PvE, where it will put Mega Charizard X behind Reshiram as a draon-type attacker, but in PvP it's absolutely one of the defining moves of the game with its powerful 4 Damage per Turn and 3 Energy per Turn profile. It's fast and furious, and could give Charizard a new offensive niche, while securing Mega Charizard X as a serious threat moving forward... though a lot of Pokemon currently learn this move as-is...

Community Day Choice 2: Caterpie

Community Day Move: Hurricane

What's a flying type without a flying move? Butterfree is being given the chance to join its counterpart, Beedrill, as a Community Day Pokemon. Butterfree was never going to get a move that would make it viable for raids, but the recently buffed Hurricane can help a bit in PvP. However, Hurricane doesn't really offer counter-coverage as everything that the original butterfly Pokemon is weak to is either neutral against or resistant to Flying, and it's also a very expensive move as well. It's not a BAD choice given the alternatives, but it's just not as useful as Drill Run was for Beedrill.

Community Day Choice 3: Grimer/Alolan Grimer

Community Day Move: Fire Punch

Fire coverage is valuable to Poison Types, as it can threaten the ubiquitous Steel Type with super effective damage. This is very true, but in this case it's a bit more true on paper. In the Great League, Muk already tends to carry Thunder Punch, which tends to have a bit more valuable coverage given what it tends to go up against. Meanwhile, Alolan Muk tends to need both Dark and Poison coverage in order to serve its niche. This is especially true in the ultra League, where Alolan Muk needs Dark coverage in particular to deal with Giratina. That said, Fire Punch isn't a pure disadvantage and will likely have niche uses and situations that will make it valuable, though it generally feels more like a side-grade than a direct upgrade.

Community Day Choice 4: Porygon

Community Day Move: Tri Attack

The only currently-unavailable shiny of the four votes, Porygon is a bit of an odd duck in this case. Porygon Z is set to receive Tri Attack; a normal type charged move that lowers the enemy attack and defense in PvP. Depending on the damage, energy cost, and odds of stat change, this could make Porygon Z an amazing glass-cannon Pokemon with the ability to harass with stat drops. It's hard to say!

The poll will be available for the 24 hour period outlined above, and will be posted on Niantic's official Pokemon Go Twitter account, which can also be seen above. While it's hard to say which of these Pokemon would be "best" in general, they're all interesting picks, and we look forward to welcoming two of them into the realm of Community Day Pokemon in the near future!

Trainers,

Pokémon GO Community Day voting is back! From August 22 to August 23, you’ll be able to vote via Twitter for the Pokémon you’d like featured! The two Pokémon that receive the most votes will go on to be featured during the next two Community Day events, with the Pokémon with the most votes featured in September and the runner-up in October!

Community Day candidates

Your Community Day candidates will be Charmander, Caterpie, Grimer, and Porygon. Here are the exclusive attacks that would be featured for each Pokémon’s Community Day.

  • Charmander: Evolve Charmeleon (the evolved form of Charmander) to get Charizard that know the Dragon-type attack Dragon Breath. Dragon Breath gives Charizard a Fast Attack that dishes out damage quickly, and the attack is super effective against Dragon-type Pokémon.
  • Caterpie: Evolve Metapod (the evolved form of Caterpie) to get Butterfree that know the Flying-type attack Hurricane. Hurricane offers Butterfree a powerful Flying-type Charged Attack to further strengthen its matchups against Fighting-, Grass-, and Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Grimer: Grimer originally discovered in the Kanto region will appear in the wild and hatch from Eggs. Alolan Grimer will appear in Raid Battles. Evolve Grimer or Alolan Grimer to get Muk or Alolan Muk that know the Fire-type attack Fire Punch. Fire Punch would be the first Fire-type attack available for Muk and Alolan Muk, giving them a Charged Attack option that not only charges quickly but also hits Steel-type Pokémon for supereffective damage.
  • Porygon: Evolve Porygon2 (the evolved form of Porygon) to get Porygon-Z that know the Normal-type attack Tri Attack. This attack will be new to Pokémon GO and, when used, will have a chance of decreasing the opposing Pokémon’s Attack and Defense.

Featured bonuses and more Community Day details will be announced at a later date.

How to vote

We’ll post a poll on our official English-language Pokémon GO Twitter on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7), and you’ll be able to cast your vote until Sunday, August 23, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7). You’ll have 24 hours to cast one vote for the Pokémon you’d like to see most for either September or October Community Day.

The winners will be announced shortly after voting ends. The Pokémon that receives the most votes by the end of the voting period will be the featured Pokémon for September Community Day on Sunday, September 20, 2020. The Pokémon that receives the second-most votes will be featured during October Community Day on Saturday, October 17, 2020.

Make your voices heard, Trainers. It’s time for you to choose which Pokémon you want as the featured Pokémon for the September and October Community Day events. Be sure to campaign for the Pokémon you most want to be chosen, and use #PokemonGOCommunityDay when doing so! Let’s GO!
