Slight difference between the character - Roy and Marth
Thx to a mild shitpost a bit below I got thinking about this.
These two characters are probably the most standard prince like characters, together with Eliwood. So they seem very similair.
To avoid talking for hours, let's not talk about Eli for now.
Roy in many ways seems like a mild ripoff from Marth, which is mostly due to how FE6 draws a LOT from FE1 and especially 3.
Doesn't help that those are the games with the least fleshed out story. But let's get back to the lords.
There's a key difference between the two that I find interesting:
Marth is very much a man of his people and friends. Being a soft person, maybe a bit naive for his age/role (which is vauge, about 16-19 in FE1 or 3, if serenes is to be believed)
He's all about bonds, and taking things step by step. He'll believe that all is gonna be right as long as he has allies he trusts (though it might be partly a brave face)
Roy meanwhile is a bit younger (15), and doesn't really talk about bonds all that much. At least nowhere near close Marth. Especially in Feh he doesn't talk about allies all to much aside from his father. Instead he talks about the goodness of humanity and their worth. About what the war does, and how the 'real work' begins after. When rebuilding happens.
Roy is a more logical thinker, seeing the bigger picture. But it also makes him less secure, and more openly so. Marth is able to have a brave face that isn't a total lie, since he relies on his allies.
Roy does trust them, but he doesn't seem to find as much security in it as Marth does.
It might be that I'm seeing more in this than there is, but I do feel there is more difference than there seems.

Yeah, I don't mind when the character has friends that they can rely on for help, but when every speech is a friendship speech then I immediately get annoyed, and that's the main problem I have with these types of characters.
I'd just like to have a main character say something like "Friends? Yeah, I have them, but a lot of the work done was because of careful planning and execution." Lol
Damnit Seeker, stop seeing everything in gameplay!
You're like a Soren!
But allow me to pitch in.
For pure dragon killing, Marth is extremely better. And in general, Marth with his special is just a more agressive unit.
Roy meanwhile is more allround solid, and has more sustain potential. Being able to take non-blue ranged foes, blast down dragons and have a somewhat easier to use buff allows him to work more easily on any team (without too much dragons/beasts)
Helps that his res is 5 higher.
I totally agree with you, I think theres plenty of differences between Marth and Roy, people are just too lazy to get into the lore and find the differences imho. I just made that shitpost quiz just because I thought it was funny that it's very hard to tell the difference between the two characters just based off their quotes lol. I love both characters very much :)
You've a point indeed, when thinking about it Roy has some similarities with Marth and thus can be thought he's like a ripoff, however their ways of thinking about the people are at a different level and it's what tells them apart the most.
Also now that you bring to mention the story it feels like there's not much of difference (apart from the different places and characters) except that in FE6 there's this divine weapons business where Roy resolves to gather them and fulfill his quest of preventing the human extinction.
I, too, think this could go on for hours and I don't want to leave too much to read, anyways it's pretty interesting to put this topic onto the table!.
But all in all I don't dislike either of them, they're great lords and so are their games!.
