Analysis

Dragoons are one of the standout units from the early pools, however, they are deprecated very quickly by Manticores and their SWAP variant. High HP, High Damage, moderate Armor Penetration, and a pair of extremely potent Skills make it a simple choice to invest in at least one or two Dragoons to hold you over until their SWAP Variant appears, rendering the vanilla units obsolete.

The key to the Dragoon’s strength lies in their Skills. The first, Blade Dance, grants them a shield equal to a percentage of their maximum health. Even at Skill Level 1, this shield can surpass 100HP, and while it remains active, Dragoons gain Damage, Move Speed, and Rate of Fire buffs. These buffs are removed if the Shield is broken or expires, but they give Dragoons a powerful kick at the start of the battle. Blade Prison, their second Skill, compounds the durability boost of the Shield, as well as offering a general Echelon survival boost by reducing the Damage and Accuracy of units the Dragoon attacks. This further boosts the Dragoon’s durability, or that of allied units.

The biggest knock against Dragoons, outside of the incoming SWAP version, is that they do require heavy investment to get the full benefits of their Skills. Blade Dance’s duration of 4 seconds is rather short and it does not refresh on a cooldown, instead activating at the start of the battle only, which will be. Overall those looking for early bang for the buck can invest in Dragoons if they wish but should be aware that investment has a serious expiration date.

Skill Priority

Blade Dancer
Passive
High Priority Duration boosts, and multiplier boosts improve the strength of this Skill quite a bit. If you’re raising Dragoons you want at least a few levels into this Skill.
Blade Prison
Passive
Low Priority While the debuff scales well with levels, a single Dragoon can keep a single target permanently debuffed at SL1, and the returns from increasing levels are moderate. Level Blade Dance before this.
