Auto-battles are generally used to farm resources (2* dolls/equipment for enhancement) or specialty dolls/equipment. Completing an auto-battle is considered an "S" rank clear.
I have heard of people auto-battling 1-2 to jump start their dolls. I prefer to use combat reports to level 30 then drag or normal clear from there.
