Character Analysis
Yukari Yakumo (Scarlet) Was Released on May 15th 2023 on Prayer “Scarlet Manipulator? Festival”.
We all know how much of a significant figure Yukari Yakumo is to Gensokyo, thanks to her intelligence, her powers and her responsibilities as one of the Sages of Gensokyo. But since she never made her debut in the Touhou franchise until Perfect Cherry Blossom, one could wonder what this Sage was up to during the events of a certain Scarlet Mist incident. Maybe this Yukari who wears red instead of the traditional purple will give us a better idea…assuming she isn’t withholding any information. Is she a friend or foe? Was she the puppet master in the world of A6? Was Remilia Scarlet a pawn? What are her true motives? Is she the reason Gensokyo would become the place we would know and love? With so many questions, you can’t guarantee you’ll get all the answers, especially when it comes to Yukari, but what you can be sure of is that she is a distinct kind of youkai with powers like no other!
Yukari Yakumo (Scarlet) is a Speed-Class Friend who breaks boundaries with low cooldown Skills, very helpful team Support and some beneficial Sun and Earth breaks.
As an Attacker / Supporter
- Increases damage to both effective and resisted elements by 20%.
- Can buff her own Yang ATK via Skill 2, and Spread Shot Bullet Line while buffing the team’s Yang ATK via Spell Card 1 and Grazing.
- Gains 1.65 Spirit Power from Skills alone, with 0.90 of it provided to the team.
- Has solid Slice Scaling and Agility buffs to help increase damage output. Team-wide buffs via Spell Cards, Last Word and Skills are executed while selfish buffs are achieved by Boosting and Bullet lines in both Shots.
- Grants the team a Barrier every 3 turns via Skill 1.
- Great range of Killers to work with, most notable having Youkai Killer.
As a Utility / Tank
- Decent anomaly utility. Spell Card 1 both inflicts and breaks Poison on all enemies and her Last Word can break both Burn and Poison.
- Great amount of Sun and Earth breaks.
- Very low cooldowns on all 3 Skills. Skill 3 can be used every other turn while the other two can be used every 3 turns which adds to aforementioned support potential.
- Reduces the Yang DEF of all enemies and Evasion of a target both by 3 Stages via Spell Card 2.
- Reduces the CRIT DEF of all enemies by 2 Stages via Last Word.
- After using her Last Word, she can increase her own Barrier Count by 4.
- Takes 35% less damage from Youkai.
- Takes 80% less damage from Scarlet Devil Mansion enemies via Spell Card 2.
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on June 25, 2023)
Spell Card
There are many, many options to take into consideration when it comes to Story Cards to equip onto A6 Yukari, so let’s get into them all.
If you need more Spirit Power to take full advantage of breaking, good old The Witch of Scarlet Dreams is the one to pick up, also coming with Yang ATK and Agility stat sticks. If you want to double down on team Spirit Power support while debuffing an enemy’s Yang DEF, Myouren Temple Anniversary does fantastic too!
Maybe you want to make up for A6 Yukari’s low duration Accuracy support? Ability Cards? fits so perfectly, increasing the team’s Accuracy and Agility thanks to her Speed Class!
Then there is the Yang ATK, and by extension, CRIT ATK route. Ordinary Magician actually covers both by increasing them by 3 and 1 stages respectively. If you want more dedicated Yang ATK options, you have Members of the Yakumo Family, How Irrational…, and Kasen’s Senkai. For more dedicated CRIT ATK options, Miracle Mallet or even New Year’s Shrine Visit VI are also effective for A6 Yukari.
And finally, you have Spell Card damage. Spell Card 1 being more Body-focused means you can use cards like Beach Sanshoku Geidontei, Choose an Animal Spirit, Incident Shrine (also boosts the Heavy bullets there too) or Stand-In Shrine Maiden. The Heavy Spell Card 2 benefits from cards like The Secret God of The Sky, Summer God, Fantasy Sea, Dropping Keystones. or Incident Shrine (again). Lastly, Top Student Council Trio is a decent budget option for damage if absolutely necessary.
Last Word
Summer God, Fantasy Sea
19th Hakurei Shrine Reitaisai
Idola-Deus
Reimu's Great Exorcism
A Curious Festival
Summer God, Fantasy Sea is our clear winner here due to an increase in Ofuda by 50%. Our next best Ofuda picks are between 19th Hakurei Shrine Reitaisai, A Curious Festival and Reimu’s Great Exorcism all with a 25% boost. However, 2022’s Reitaisai card also brings a stage of CRIT ATK which, with Killers like Youkai, could make more of a difference. Lastly, if you want to focus on Earth power, Idola-Deus works too, with a 40% increase in Earth and 2 Stages of Yang ATK.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
The second Skill, Youkai Expansion will be first up here. With all Skills starting off with 0.25 Spirit Power, this Skill also starting off with a 4 Turn Cooldown instead of 3 as well as being able to take A6 Yukari above the 2P mark will help a lot. After this, you can relish her supporting potential, starting with Skill 3’s Incident Regrets. The combination of Spirit Power, Accuracy and Agility buffs are very helpful all in their own ways, and this does slightly edge out the first Skill’s Naming of Duels. Its usefulness might rival Skill 3, but since the Barrier effect stays unchanged, you get less from this Skill (just Spirit Power and Agility) which is why it goes last here, but it does not take away from this Skill’s benefits.
Character Strengths
Boundary of Skills and Cooldown
When using any of A6 Yukari’s 3 Skills, you’ll definitely appreciate their quick cooldown duration with very helpful effects. Skills 1 and 2 only have 3 turns of downtime, with Skill 3 being used every other turn! On top of that, the support across the two Skills include Spirit Power, Agility, Accuracy and even a Barrier every 3 turns! It would have been awesome if the Yang ATK buff on her Skill 2 wasn’t selfish, but good thing her Spell Card 1’s Pre-ATK and Grazing makes up for that with their team-wide effects!
Greatness in Power and Breaks
A6 Yukari is just fantastic with what she does when it comes to dealing breaks, whether it be Sun and Earth elements or her handy Poison anomaly utility, especially on her Spell Card 1 where she can both inflict and break them on all enemies. Her Sun and Earth elements also get a 20% boost in power if they are resisted or effective on said enemy. This takes us into her greatness in damage dealing, as A6 Yukari shows those below her how it’s done by showing off her great Killer range (Youkai), slight Yang DEF, Evasion and CRIT DEF debuffs across her Spell Card 2 and Last Word, and with a high Yang ATK stat at 1875, you can expect great things from this Scarlet-themed Sage!
Character Weaknesses
Needs CRIT ATK Buffs
Unfortunately, A6 Yukari does miss out on CRIT ATK in her whole kit. This is mitigated a little with her Last Word’s CRIT DEF debuff, but Story Cards and external support will definitely fix this, and will help take more advantage of her wide Killer range.
